Stupid/silly video game names

Last Raven is tight because if I remember correctly, they are called Ravens.

Nine Breaker sounds strange to me, but it probably has some meaning as well.

You're right, I remembered the back of the box talked about Ravens or something. They're just weird titles :D

Oh yeah, there's also Armored Core: For Answer. :lol

Syphon Filter was story related, too, the whole narrative revolved around it. Still a weird title, it sounds gross. :-(
Yeah, not only is it story related, but its also really fucking badass.

Epic Mickey.

Now you're just trolling, man. I'm not that much of a fan of Mickey Mouse -- I prefer Donald Duck -- but that name is just brilliant in the context of the game (based on what we've seen so far, that is).

Nothing to do with Mickey. It's just that "epic" in the context of games sounds silly to me, it's so oversued and misused. If they actually intended to take a jab at this issue then it's a good name indeed.

Metal Gear anything.

I love the series and all, but... Metal gear? Every machine has metal gears in them somewhere...

OMG MY TOASTER IS THE NEW METAL GEAR???!?!

I came in to post exactly this, minus the "Toaster"-part. :P

Unfortunatley, most game-titles suffer from silly or stupid names. Like, almost all of them.
As pointed out before "Resident Evil" for example.
Or "Killzone", "Gears of War", "Zone of the Enders" and "Far Cry" are just a few normal ones, that if you think about them just sounds really silly.

Epic Mickey sounds great for two reasons:

- The artwork, which looks great, suggest a very different take on a character that's been around for like 80 years. So, I think it's fitting.

- The way the two words come together. Epic Mickey. There's a contrast in the words there that I like. Mickey sounds so simple and down to earth while epic is the opposite.

That's my reasoning anyhow!

Square's sports games had some odd, awkward names: Driving Emotion Type-S, Gekikuukan Pro Baseball: The End of the Century 1999.

edit: how could I forget...

Syphon Filter
Mass Effect
Dirt, Fuel, Grid
Mirror's Edge
Indigo Prophecy AND Fahrenheit

Get out.

New Super Mario Bros. bugs me. I mean here we are in 2009, the game's three years old, by no means new anymore. Yet it is still called New Super Mario Bros. When the game is 20 years old, it will still be called New Super Mario Bros.

Nevermind NSMB Wii. You'd think they could have come up with a unique title to emphasize the co-op or something. But nope, they just slapped Wii on the end of the previous game's name and called it a day.

They were just really lazy in naming these games.

I'm guessing the Japanese were in cahoots with the Germans once so something might have rubbed off.

Kind of like you see "SS" "S" classes and tiers in Japanese games (i.e. Resident evil and fighting game tier lists) and not in a western developed game.

making this up whilst drunk

Personally, I preferred "Revenge" by a long shot, some of the enemies were simply insane, what a trippy game! The first game kind of seemed like a souped-up Defender clone to me.

Personally, I'd like to nominate "Metroid: Other M". It's definitely one of the most Engrishy game names Nintendo ever came up with.

Is this by chance derived from the Japanese term (can't find a better name for it) "nobi nobi" which means something along the lines of "carefree/dawdling"?

Barko is a FREAK! FREAK! FREAK!

I had to post the big version of the box scan to show that the game has a werewolf character named "Barko".

But as cheesy and terrible as the game is, I actually like the art style of the character portraits. That classic anime style seemed so generic back then but now that it's all but disappeared I miss it, in a weird way.

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. A level of stupidity I have yet to see matched.

:lol :lol :lol beat me to it. I remember renting this game at a blockbuster with my buddy up at school and there were a bunch of sorority girls right behind us on line and the clerk at the store said "Here is your Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus" we were cracking up :lol

I refuse to accept Mirror's Edge. It refers to the border between the glossy world of the totalitarian regime and the network of runners.

How's that brilliant? Epic Mickey sounds really bad. I probably wouldn't buy any game with Epic ______ in the title. I came into this thread hoping to post Epic Mickey, but obviously I was too late.

:lol But doesn't it seem like they thought of the title first and then later figured out a way to work it into the story? I think it's pretty silly.

No, not really.

And regardless, it's a really cool name.

Katamari Damacy
Infinite Undiscovery
LittleBigPlanet
Animal Crossing

All have little to do with what the game IS . S;

What the hell? Second page and no Yu-gi-oh nonsense? Gaf I am disappoint

etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Seems to be a lot more Japanese games in here than Western. I wonder if Japanese devs just don't do research into the connotations of the English titles they pick.

My picks: Another Code. Who the fuck thought starting a game with "Another" was a good idea? Thankfully the U.S. title "Trace Memory" is fine.

Agreed on OMG NEW Super Mario Bros. especially since they're inexplicably using the same title for the Wii version even though it's a new game from the ground up with an entirely different philosophy. Is the next one gonna be Newer SMB?

Beyond Good & Evil: I've played through the game three times and I still don't know what Nietzsche has to do with it.

Bioshock: For a game as ambitious and original as this, you'd think Ken Levine could have come up with a title that didn't sound like something the Extreme Video Game Name Generator spit out.

Modern Warfare: As a subtitle of CoD, it's fine. As the name of its own series, it couldn't be more nondescript. It's Warfare (how original)....but Modern!!!!11.

And all these racing games consisting of a single four-letter word: Blur, Pure, Grid, Dirt.

Also I agree with the Super Mario brothers 4: super mario brothers 3 nonsense. its so annoying

MAG isnt stupid unless you actually call it Massive Action Game
