Suda's keynote

Yeah, only thing to complain about is the frame rate in a couple parts, but I kinda expected that considering how small the team is.

Voice acting sounds 100x better as well.

Really short 1-up interview pre-conference session

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3157920

So what are those actions? "The basic slash is on the A button on the Wii Remote, and you can do a finishing slash by actually doing a slash motion with the Wii Remote, and there goes the enemy's head," he says. "By holding down the B button and combining that with a motion, you can do a number of cool wrestling moves."

That sounds like how Fire Pro Wrestling handles grappling/moves (which Suda used to work on). :D I really think a system like that could work ridiclously well with the motion control.

It really does look awesome. I'm bit worried about the beach fight, though, it looked a lot similar to Killer 7 and its rails-on. I hope it works better when I play it (already an instant buy for me).

What are you talking about? NMH isn't on rails

No on-rails movement in No More Heroes.

Its a sandbox game.

yeah I know, it's a sandbox game, but when he was fighting the guys at the beach he was moving left and right to meet the bad dudes and he was kind of stuttering. It could of course have been the framerate that was making me think that it has rails on gameplay, in that case excuse my observation :lol :lol

Anyone getting some serious God Hand vibes? I mean just the characters and the humor reminds me of it

You're not the only one...

I'm also liking how, based on the 1up preview, that Suda51 may be putting his "Fire Pro Wrestling" experience to good use with the game's "grapple features".

Now, just make it so Mr. Touchdown can get an array of Luchadore masks, outfits and such, and we'll be good. They already confirmed that some FPW characters would serve as guest-stars, correct...?

Brobzoid

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
God damn it. Suda's visual design is so ****ing awesome. Killer7 sold me by having the best trailer ever, and this one does a damn fine job living up to that.

Even if I can see the gameplay being more sloppy and that sloppiness being more noticeable since it's not on-rails. But I'll love it anyway. Suda is king. King in my realm.

It was a cool session, though I think it will be hard for anyone to give it a full keynote summary.

He spoke about the difference between 'game directors' and 'game producers' in 'Punk Games'.

Basically, the game producer needs to shield the director from external publisher pressures, while at the same time, the director needs to respect and understand the demands / needs of his producer.

He was a good speaker with some nice stories which got some laughs from the audience - nice talk.

I took some notes on his talk:

The translation was a little shaky. There were two translators that kept taking turns for some reason. One was Japanese and a little less skilled at doing anything more than literal translation.

Here's my notes in bullets.

Suda was wearing a pink Kurt Cobain shirt with the lyric "Grandma Take Me Home" on the back.

He said he was from Nagano, then moved to the city, Tokyo, when he was 18.

Human was his first gaming gig. He made Wrestling games there and bailed out to start his own company a year before Human went under.

He has three creative mottos:
Call & Response (a reference to hip hop?)
Lets Punk
Crash and Build

He noted that the controls in Killer 7 were made in an effort to help players who couldn't handle 3D game controls using dual analog. Most of his friends couldn't play 3D games.

He said that people quite frequently suggest that he must be on drugs to come up with his scenarios, but he assured the audience that he's clean -- he likes to drink, but can't drink very much.

He talked at length about working with Mikami and the value of a producer protecting those working under him, such as directors, allowing them to be more creative and experimental.

Mikami sent him to E3 to check out what the American audience liked and he discovered that we prefer FPS and free movement. He and Mikami mulled the idea of doing away with the rails controls and eventually Suda made the decision to stick with the new style. Mikami said that's what he was thinking too, but had opted to leave the decision to Suda.

For Suda there are two types of game directors, business types who cater to the needs of the publisher and artist types whose primary concern is innovation.

He didn't really imply a preference to each type. In fact, he said that it's important to meet client demands if you want to make games.

He mentioned the influence of audience reception on the gaming board at 2ch and told the story of one game director who was heartbroken after bad user response there. The guy in question was emotionally paralyzed for months. The posts were pretty harsh. One user said "you should die."

Suda felt, though, that directors need to learn to get over it and learn to accept and use negative feedback to their advantage.

On game criticism and story: he noted that cinema and the culture around it is quite mature, while gaming is only really 20 years.

He made a call to game creators to be true to their initial creative impulse. He mentioned the first visceral reaction he had to seeing a video game arcade when he was young and the need to recreate that feeling in the games he creates.

He mentioned bands that created that visceral response: Joy Division, Nirvana, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays (I may have missed one)

Finally he announced an event in Japan on April 14th called Hoppers where Kojima and Mikami would be involved. The promo art was a cool recreation of an EC comics cover with Solid Snake fighting a zombie.

I forgot one thing that might be big news:

His press people passed out a sort of pamphlet for Grasshopper.

Under the heading "Principal Business Partners" were the following businesses:

Ascii Corportation
Capcom
Bandai Namco
Marvelous Interactive
Microsoft
Sega
Spike
Square Enix

I'm gonna skip over the masturbateton that is the video and just quote this piece from IGN
Suda 51 then announced a Grasshopper-centric gaming event taking place on April 14th, called "Hopper's." The event will feature dialogues between special guests Hideo Kojima and Shinji Mikami, as well as music by Killer 7's composer Masafumi Takada. Suda 51's parting word was the announcement of DS ports of both The Silver Case, and The Silver Case Word 25, a mobile phone offshoot of the former title. Both of these games will be text-heavy graphic-adventure games, and Suda 51 had no idea whether they would make it out in the US because of this.
Hawt.
And I'd also love to see The Silver Case released over here, but very much doubt it will =/.

Interesting, if terribly disjointed, speech. Even if you don't like the guy's work it is hard not to admire his passion for doing what he wants to do and not fight against his vision to appease marketing.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

THE TRAILER IS SOOOOOOO GOOD

There needs to be more hype for NMH

It's like God Hand meets Killer 7 in sandbox form, meets Kill Bill meets everything awesome ever SO GOOD

My only concern at this stage though, if Suda decided to sacrifice an indepth mature story for mainstream appeal :\

Slicing people in half (vertically, no less), a killer named "Destroyman", an anime otaku wearing porno sunglasses as the protagonist and mainstream appeal are mutually exclusive anyway, I think.

You can have both. The problem /best thing with killer7 wasn't the maturity of it's story so much the complex way it was presented. And the amount of blood in the trailer pretty much means it's gotta be an M, right? The story can be filled with all sorts with that freedom.

Perhaps a little bit early for this, but does anyone want to make some predictions on the amount NMH could possibly sell in NA when it releases? I've got a feeling it could be a pretty big title for the Wii if it's marketed correctly.

Let me digest this bit of information.

Can somebody who is not on drugs, LSD to be more specific, come up with Killer7... Can it possibly be true? What is he going to up with then if he starts using drugs... My head is going to explode.

Yes, if you're drinking with a few equally crazy friends, you can come up with lots of really strange stuff. Depends on how drunk you are. Watching trash like homeshopping while drinking helps as well for some strange reason...

Terry Gilliam claims to not do/have done psychedelics either. Surprising, but not entirely unbelievable.

edit: upon reflection, not that surprising.

Thans Flynn, there is a lot of really great stuff you're sharing.
Can you tell me - where a lot of people in attendance? Do other devs and pubs take Suda seriously? I know he's relatively new and niche, but he's really talented for an indie guy

Well, Kojima is appearing at Hopper's, so...

Goddamnit. Can't wait.

Heh...I wonder if they may be FINALLY open to talking about this supposed Project S at that time...

I mean, sure...Kojima can't get to work on it until MGS4 is finished, but at least TELLING US WHAT IT IS would be a start...
