Ridiculously cool. I have been a fan of Joe Mad since I was a kid collecting his earliest X-Men work. Also, that is a really nice coloring job, good work.

Finished my perfect run of Suikoden last night. Had to Google search on how to import the save since I guess the vita makes a new memory card for every game. Excited to start Suikoden 2, one of my top 3 games of all time.
Same for Japan too, if you mean home console only.
The US and Japan got Tierkreis in 2009 for DS, and Japan got 1000 Year Tapestry for PSP in 2012. Both are non-canon spin-offs though, and should be definitely avoided.
In the mean time I'll beat it on my Vita. Been feeling pretty lethargic, so not much gaming of late. Will be with family away from my computer soon though, so no procrastinating.
Any good and detailed synopsis of Suikoden I out there? I played it years ago, I remember the main story beats and the major characters, I was pretty deep in Suiko lore stuff back then, but a a refreshment would be nice.
Suikoden III with all its problems stuck with me a lot more than Suiko V I must say. Loved the POVs structure, the villains and the setting. Suiko V was good but for me it didn't have anything "memorable" in it. I remember the dungeons being atrocius (the load times didn't help) and the story becoming worse and worse going forward. It's still good, but it doesn't have the charm and the sense of continuity of the first three games for me.
Suiko IV is a bit better with Tactics...but it's so forgettable. It's almost completely detached from the setting...except from Ted <3.

were a lot easier than some of the strategy guides described. I'm now farther than I've ever been in the game so everyone is basically blind to me! Almost have all 108!
Playing Suikoden 1 is torture. Inventory system is shit, menu commands...shit, attack x5, can't even walk diagonally. If the sequel is anything like this, I'm going to quit while I'm ahead.

Going from Suikoden I to II is like going from Assassin's Creed I to II. The jump is quality is apparent right away. That said, you should *really* finish Suikoden I first.

The first game is a bit archaic but it's not that big a deal once you get used to the little quirks. Have you gotten your castle yet? Things get easier to manage then.

When battling random monsters, I either have to Free Will it (which I don't like) or manually assign each member a monster to target, so really attack x6. I've had the castle for a while, and it's filled with squatters now, half of whom I don't care a lot for. Thing that gets me is that I have to use a guide, I haven't received the world map yet and half the items I find I don't know wtf they are.

Characters will not use any magic or items when you pick free will. If you are just attacking, then pick that option. (You won't get to pick the enemy though.) The battles are supposed to be quick.
If you have a castle you should be really close to getting a map. The items are a bit weird, but they are actually a lot more streamlined compared to lots of other RPGs. (Medicine both heals and revives, but the ladder only outside battle.)
Suikoden I help! Kind of urgent! You'll understand once you see spoilers.
I just
beat the game and the final image is McDohl walking away, like a photo, and it says "The End." But I can't save it or get out of it. Is that normal? I don't want to assume that this is normal and then find out my S1 save won't transfer over, so my game is currently left on. Also, I played the PSN version if that makes any difference.

Time to recruit the last three, most annoying stars of destiny... Mukumuku, Gordon, and Lebrante. Walking back and forth in the Greenhill area and rope climbing for Celadon Urns, here we go.

You can win an urn at the minigame where you roll a die to move up a rope. It's located in the back behind the kitchen area. It's randomly given out as a reward.

Not only that, the writing (or translation) of the story is incredibly simple... Every time I replay S1, I'm surprised by how simple the writing is because it's a good story and easy to just remember the overall quality, and yet forgot that the delivery was so elementary. S2 doesn't really change anything per se in the core formula, but it really improves and especially refines everything. Everything from items to attack animations to random battle speed to the writing is either higher quality or more refined, efficient, and streamlined.
It is still, at its core, a classic sprite-based RPG though so certain things like walking directions will of course be limited by design.
So freaking happy I saved Nanami through that flash choice. I was terrified when they lied and said she passed and thought I screwed up again. That was so satisfying and cathartic. I never thought they'd be able to get a happy ending but goddammit they did. Felt bad that they ultimately abandoned Pilika and Jillia but I ultimately understand why. Maybe one day Jowy will reunite with them again..
Gonna be so hard playing something else tbh. Hopefully with this release, they'll eventually release Suikoden III, IV, and V and I can finally play catch up.
Tip for recruiting Gordon: buy Crystal Balls from Crom, Forest Village, or South Window, sell them at Kobold Village. Buy Ancient Text at Kobold Village, sell at Forest Village. Buy Gold Bars from Rokkaku, sell at Crom. That should net you enough and is much less tedious the rope climbing minigame.

, of all people, to make an appearance. (Spoiler related to Suikoden II's true ending, do not click unless you unlocked it)
This character has an hidden potential for a PTSD storyline. Yes, the poor girl suffered enough, I know, but I want her to come back, so the player will burst into tears when she inevitably dies in Jowy's arms.
No, I'm no sadist, I just want a very emotionaly powerful scene. And she is the perfect candidate to crush the soul of many players.
For those of you new to Suikoden as a series and starting with the first one.. Thank you.
The game is old and comes from a time where gaming conventions were very different from what we have now.
The second game improves on these limitations in just about every single way.
I do think that your appreciation of 2 will be further enhanced coming directly from part 1 as you get to know the world that these stories take place in. Also, playing through Suikoden 2 is also enhanced with the cameos from Suikoden 1.

Harsh, indeed. In fact, I would say that my idea is downright cruel, especially after everything those two characters lived through. But a good story is one which moves you, and one shouldn't shy away from killing characters. Though, from a story-telling point of view, said death should serve a purpose. (Spoiler related to the whole Suikoden universe, please avoid if you didn't finish both Suikoden I and II with perfect endings)
There is still the possibility of reviving a character, though honestly they already did that with Gremio, and others were saved from certain death thanks to True Runes... At one point, it is best to avoid that trope which has been kinda overused.

If Suiko VI is ever made, Riou, Jowy and Nanami have to make a cameo the same way McDohl did in II.
the perfect ending of Suikoden II is the canon one, with Teresa Wisemail becoming the first president of the Dunan Republic (she was only acting President before the election, since someone had to fill the spot after Riou left), with Shu as her advisor (who left his position to Klaus after a while, though Shu came back into action during the Higheast Province rebellion).

I'd like to see a kinda distant future where both Jowy and Riou are still young while they watch Nanami grow old and see how it affects them (the same with Tir and watching Gremio, Pahn, and Clio). It'll be interesting to see how their outlook is vs how it affected Luc and the True Wind Rune. I know they suffered a lot, but I kinda also wanna see how Flik and Viktor sees them, not helping out against Harmonia. Does the Dawn Rune give immortality like the True Runes? (Since it's power came straight fromt he Sun Rune). Whatever happened to the Howling Voice Guild and is Storm like the Star Dragon Sword? PESMERGA AND HUBER? You got me excited for Suikoden VI even though I know it's not coming T_T
How come? I see him as kinda similar to Delita in FFT.
He did things from the inside and tried to halt the Beast Rune with the Black Sword. Sure He could have done things a little differently, but I feel like the Rune of Beginning kinda forced him into a fight with Riou, no?
Just wondering why you didn't like him, that's all

I'm curious as well. I've always liked Jowy and Delita (they are two of my most favorite characters) because of their characterization and what they were trying to do. Sure, they perhaps did things in the wrong way but I felt that's what made them feel more human.
Finally picked this up for my Vita. Got two Double-Beat runes in that first dungeon. Welp, I guess I'm not gonna have to try this play through. I'll prolly pick a funky team to compensate. I've never stuck to an all squirrel run, or used the squid. Hmm.

Definitely agreed. The only difference between them is
One gets stabbed by the girl they love, the other doesn't lol. Though, might be the wrong way, I feel like it was necessary. Without Delita, Ramza probably wouldn't have been as successful. Jowy definitely helped take down Luca as well.
Damn, I need to finish Suikoden 1 now so I can replay Suikoden II haha.

The Dawn and Twilight runes are children runes of the Sun Rune. Only the Sun Rune is a True Rune. Thus, Dawn and Twilight shouldn't grant immortality, though that doesn't mean they are ordinary runes. By that logic, other children runes shouldn't grant immortality or resistance to diseases either, such as the Star Rune (however, there are high chances that the bearer of said rune isn't human to begin with... assuming Zerase isn't the physical form of the Star Rune itself). Between her bath scene where it is strongly implied that she isn't human, her connection to the Night Rune (well, if she is its daughter, they sure both share a temper), Leknaat, Jeane, and her threats if you make Oboro investigate her, we have every reason to think she is very special.
Talking about immortality, Jeane will remain forever a mystery. Ironically, in the original novel, her star of destiny was borne by a character known for his ugliness. The creators stated that she doesn't have a True Rune (also confirmed by Lilly Pendragon in Suikoden III, during a bath scene). In Suikoden III, she makes a comment to a dog who seems to be able to see her "true form", but asks him to keep it a secret. If you bring her with you to see Genoh before recruiting it, it will mistake her for an "old being". Food for thoughts.
So many plot threads hanging... So much potential... Such universe... It is soul-crushing that Suikoden VI will probably never see the light of day.

True, it shouldn't. Atleast, there is nothing I can really based it off other than being a much closer rune to the True Runes vs other runes.
I always saw Zerase as...idk, maybe also part of the Gate Rune Clan, same with Jeane. Maybe I'm totally off base on that one though. But they do seem to know each other well enough. (I wonder if Windy is dead or alive).
I really wish he would continue the series. I just really want to learn more about the universe. I need my answers for the Sindar, and Hikusaak. T_T
