Suikoden II |OT| The Affordable 108

I'm curious as well. I've always liked Jowy and Delita (they are two of my most favorite characters) because of their characterization and what they were trying to do. Sure, they perhaps did things in the wrong way but I felt that's what made them feel more human.
Yeah or even potentially Vice from TO... There are obvious differences but I think a lot of us probably associate each with one another because back around 1998 it would have been so easy to play all 3 games back to back because they released within about 12-13 months of one another. Three of my favorite characters, too. Was such a great time span to discover all 3 games at the same time (and then discovered Ogre Battle and also Suikoden 1) to get even more out of the lore) back then.

Jowy
's motivation for staying King of Highland instead of negotiating a truce with Riou's army totally flew over my head as a kid. He goes into detail about how the scene in Muse, where the city-state leaders met are were hostile and in disagreement with one another, seemed like an absolute failure of a government. And he's right, too - Gorudo pulled out his knights, Gustav didn't give assistance at all, and Makai seemed reluctant to help. Lo and behold, Luca does end up taking over Muse (albeit with Jowy's help, but let's be real - it would have happened anyway). His decision to create a nation that rules by force is understandable and gives him just enough justification for his actions while still leaving room for them to be radical and "wrong". I always thought his decision to keep fighting was dumb when I first played this game, but I understand it much better now.

Also, I wish Riou changed into a more fitting outfit for a military leader at some point, although this really goes for any of the Suiko heroes. Just look at this piece of art:

I'd like to see a kinda distant future where both Jowy and Riou are still young while they watch Nanami grow old and see how it affects them (the same with Tir and watching Gremio, Pahn, and Clio). It'll be interesting to see how their outlook is vs how it affected Luc and the True Wind Rune. I know they suffered a lot, but I kinda also wanna see how Flik and Viktor sees them, not helping out against Harmonia. Does the Dawn Rune give immortality like the True Runes? (Since it's power came straight fromt he Sun Rune). Whatever happened to the Howling Voice Guild and is Storm like the Star Dragon Sword? PESMERGA AND HUBER? You got me excited for Suikoden VI even though I know it's not coming T_T
Im so sad now.

Riou and Jowy don't have true runes, they both have component parts of a single true rune and will age. If Riou had combined the 2 runes into the rune of beginning then he'd be ageless

Well, it is different compared to the Dawn Rune example. The Dawn Rune is a child rune, but not a True Rune stricto sensu. However, the Bright Shield and Black Sword are halves of the Rune of the Beginning, one True Rune, and this True Rune can be considered the "Mother" Rune, since all Runes were created from it, after the equivalent of the Big Bang of Suikoden's universe. So, I would think that, as both Bright Shield and Black Sword are stricto sensu True Runes, not child runes, they should grant immortality and immunity to diseases.

And, well, we already have one example which validates my hypothesis: the Gate Rune, which has two halves, with the Front one borne by Windy, and the Back one borne by Leknaat. And both are human beings who have lived for over 400 years. Both the Front and Back halves grant immortality to their bearers. Thus, partial True Runes grant immortality.

Isn't Leknaat and Windy ageless as well despite only having parts of the gate rune? So by that account, wouldn't Riou and Jowy be ageless as well?

Edit: Ooops, beaten super super bad rofl.

Here we go again with the Rune of beginning....this discussion is timeless

Ok here we go, basically the rune of beginning is not yet complete. That's why it does not grant no aging. The gate rune is complete rune split into 2.

Think of it like bread, Gate rune is 2 pcs of bread still bread, with all of which makes it bread.

Rune of beginning is still flour and water. 2 parts or ingredients to bread, with different properties.

Why wouldn't the Rune of Beginning be complete?
Since both Riou and Jowy withstood the "battle phase" and was able to bear them without being forced into battle, wouldn't that mean it's complete? I take it as similar to the Rune of Punishment and Lazlo being able to put it into the "forgiveness" phase. Also, even then, there is no precedent that the rune of beginning wouldn't be able to grant immortality without being "complete"

In the best ending the rune does briefly become whole, or atleast the hero is able to access its full power to heal Jowy. In the other endings where Jowy dies and the hero takes both parts to complete the rune it will grant agelessness.

Their reward is that they can remain friends, without fate compelling them to fight and the saving Jowy from death.

Hey everyone,

I'm doing a giveaway on my twitter that ends in a few hours - sorry for short notice here.

You must follow me on Twitter @installbase
AND
Retweet my previous tweet "RT and follow me for your chance to win Suikoden 1 & Suikoden 2 codes for PSN/Vita - very very limited!"

there will be a lottery pick.

If you don't win.. don't fret, I will also be giving a few codes away randomly throughout the day tomorrow so it'll be first come first serve then.

Beat it. Even after playing so many times in my earlier days it's still as good as I remember it. Knowing what I know now things were much easier. The final boss was super easy even with taking members I had not used all that much in past playthroughs - Hai Yo, Oulan, Chaco. Still wish there was a new game plus of sorts. Took me just under 33 hours but I really took my time with everything, Even when I remember so much, I still savor all the great moments.

Now to get back to my backlog.

I finished my Suikoden 1 save. Got all the transfer characters to level 60+, weapon maxed for all characters, and everyone geared. It's fun mastering.

Started my Suikoden 2 game. Just spent an hour farming 5 double-beat runes. It's crazy how the best runes in the game are all available before you're level 10 (Fury in Muse, and Double-beat in Mountain Path)

I didn't get fury on this run until the final dungeon, then I ended with 3 by the time it was over.

I did make sure to farm 3 double beats in the beginning.

Just beat S1. Didn't bother with the grinding out levels and weapons since I was already at 30 hrs and just wanted to finish. Someone posted a save game in this thread with pretty good everything, so I'll just use that.

Edit: This guy. Thanks.

To those who are playing Suikoden I without aiming for all 108 stars or wants the extra content without playing Suikoden I, I found a Suikoden I save file ready to be transferred for Suikoden II from Gamefaqs.

Dammit, I knew this would happen!

Stopped playing the game for a week, booted it up and now I have no idea where to go or what to do.

I'm outside Muse. Wandered around and got Rikimaru. Wandered way over to the West and no clue.

Any ideas?

Go to the item store and buy the wooden amulet for Pilika, then return to Toto village.

Finally figured it out! Had to recruit a party member and then the amulet quest opened up.

Only problem now is that most of my characters are way overleveled, as I've been wandering around for hours and hours. Oh well!
You can't really over level in Suikoden unless you exploit some tricks, because the exp is scaled.

Glad to see that you found it useful. I should post it whenever someone is not really feeling S1 or doesn't want to use a walkthrough to get the best ending.

I hate to be that guy, but, is there a point where this game
(Suikoden II, since I see lots of people discussing I)
picks up? I'm about 2 hours in and I'm not as engaged as I would have hoped. The sprites and music are good, the story has sort-of piqued my interest, but I'm finding everything else unremarkable so far. For reference, I'm
right after Viktor saves my punk ass and tells me to go recruit peeps
.

It really starts to pick up once you get to Muse. It gets better than where you are a bit before that, when Luca first shows up, but the story really starts to hit its stride as soon as Jess sends you on a certain mission.

I think Suikoden 2 does most everything better than 1 for obvious reasons, but the story in 1 to me feels more urgent, with way less downtime. Perfect flow. I find the music in 1 is also more catchy (not better) and I like the random battle theme more...which you hear a lot of.

A little off-topic, but being back home for a couple days and with the PSN downtime I dusted off my old PS2 and started replaying Suikoden V, so good.

The PS2 games really need to go on PSN as Classics.

My inventory is getting crazy full and hard to manage.

Does the inventory stash lady ever come back? (I just beat out that vampire dude's spawn and got the castle back)

My latest Suikoden 2 run has been so lucky. Never had to spend more than 15 mins getting a drop. I now have every recipe (except the recipes from the competition).

You would think this is easy? But there's 5 that drop from monsters and they are all bugged where you can't hand them in or even put them in your safe without them both being in your inventory (each one has a pair, the famous one recipe 12 and 34)

ShoUld probably play this serie. How long to beat ca?

They need to start working on the series again.
So many unexplored countries we heard of, so much lore and even continents. We still don't know anything about the western continent, the eastern one and what's north and south ou the north and south continents.

Freyjadour, Suiko V protag, had a really awesome outfit in the end. Too bad you just saddled with his leggings/shorts outfit.

m2GI1Lp.png

That's the worst outfit among all other Suikoden characters.

Below is everywhere you get to visit on the map in the game. The rest are just mentions or scenes from some place in that area - but no actual map:

Suikoden 1 = Toran Republic / Scarlet Moon Empire
Suikoden 2 = Dunan Republic / City States of Jowston & Highland Kingdom, Tinto Republic
Suikoden 3 = Zexen Confederacy, Grasslands
Suikoden 4 = Island Nations Federation, Kooluk Empire
Suikoden Tactics = Island Nations Federation, Kooluk Empire
Suikoden 5 = Falena Queendom

Really, the only big question marks on this map that we haven't explored is the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia (really the end game of the Suikoden story) and the Western Continent. The rest don't have enough for their own stories.

Suikoden VI could go for Dukedom of Gaien + Zelant Kingdom

Suikoden VI could go for Dukedom of Gaien + Zelant Kingdom
As much as Harmonia needs to happen, this would be totally ok too.

I'd be happy, as long as it's dat canon world.
Because this.

Really, though, Matilda is probably the most interesting "zone" in the Suiko world next to the den of Dragon Knights, and I imagine Gaien to be somewhat similar based on the small, small glimpse we saw of it in IV.

If they make a VI, it'll probably be a reboot, or totally unrelated.

It's been more than 10 years since Suikoden III (the last "present day" game) was released, and while Suikoden II has just been released, it's still a 14 year old game. Making a new game referencing events of the previous games seems like it'd alienate a new fanbase.

Why not just make a new game, and have cameos and easter eggs that reference the older games for the old fans? Well, they could do that...but I dunno, after what happened with Suikoden III in terms of plot, they should be referencing the past games, because those events were important.

I dunno. I really want a Suikoden VI, but I'm afraid we're gonna get something akin to Breath of Fire VI.

daoster, that train of thought is what lead to Suikoden Tierakis which was horrible.

You can create a game that has references from the previous games, even characters, but still be a story that can stand on it's own.

Except that Tierkreis wasn't horrible. Now, I definitly prefer the original universe, and I don't wish for sequels/prequels to Tierkreis.

That being said, I agree with the rest.
