Suikoden II |OT| The Affordable 108

All those things are definitely improved in Suikoden II.

Speaking of War Battles, one tip I can give you for SII is that someone (very easy to miss) can be recruited during one of the early battles. Make sure you pay attention to that. (Who it is should be fairly obvious once you get there.)

More details for Watch Da Birdie if you are interested:
During a war battle near the city of Muse, Flik will talk about Gilbert, who he thinks he can recruit on your side. Following that statement, usually Flik's army will attack Gilbert's. If Gilbert's unit is damaged, he will switch sides and join yours. However, there is no guarantee that Flik will damage his unit, though more often than not it will (just keep in mind that it is RNG). Following this, you have to be sure that Gilbert actually survive the battle: if his unit is destroyed and if you get the war message that he is killed, you will need to restart.

Oh yeah, I read about that one.

Any character I need to keep leveled up like Pahn in Suikoden 1? Can anyone die outside of the War Battle Deaths due to wrong choices?

Trying to not spoil too much, no, you don't need to level up anyone to keep them alive. Even if someone dies in an story event on II, they still count as a Star.

There IS an optional death, but you have to go out of your way to get it.

Never knew missing
Gilbert]
was even a thing haha I thought it was basically guaranteed to get him because he almost always gets 1 damage first. I did that tonight and I didn't even have to do anything -- one of the AI troops damaged and recruited him, and he was strong enough to stay alive without me doing anything :P seems you'd have to be pretty heavily unlucky to somehow miss him hehe

anyhow, two biggest impressions from playing through to North Window tonight first time in 6 years

+ game really gives a lot of feels :O the intro and a few of those 'landscape' scenes where you're waiting or sleeping, still grasping at tear jerkers.

- forgot how.... 'young' the game is haha maybe because i'm getting older and don't really like most jrpgs anymore but the young cast and dialogue definitely aren't my thing anymore. still charming because i have so much nostalgia for it

+ also forgot how much innuendo the game had haha

- i hate sindar ruins :O they were pretty moderate in III and actually kinda charming in V (well two of them were at least, the two linked to the lake or the dwarf tunnels were pretty cool but I hated that forest one) but I especially hate when I'm basically just supposed to meet someone in a city and get completely sidetracked into a ruins just to get a key to the city :P such a chore

+ game has aged so well... the characters, how the battles animate attacks simutaneously and quickly, all the army base or town details like blacksmith forges, weapon shelves, kitchens, so many with text descriptions... the game has some of the best detailed sprite 'dioramas' this side of FF Tactics and probably the most quaint towns outside a Zelda

Thanks guys!

I heard the game has some glitches, and I guess they're in the PSN release still...any major glitches to be aware of?

Quite a few actually:
- [USA version only] When you will recruit Annallee, she is supposed to be singing her song. However, the sound file doesn't play when it should, leaving you with absolutly no song during the scene, in which you may wonder if you game froze. Wait just a few seconds, it will work again.
- [USA version only] During three war battles, this music (War Theme 3) is supposed to play, yet doesn't. You are supposed to hear it during you second war battle, and way later in 2 separate war battles.
- [USA version only] Actually happens with War Theme 1 too!
- It is entirely possible to miss some cooking recipes due to bad programming. More info here.
- Bugs, including a few game-breaking ones. You can find a list here.
- [USA version only?] One final song which is supposed to play during the credits won't play, which can be a bit jarring. Its name is La passione commuove la storia .

I don't feel like playing the first game, but I really want to jump into this one, as I've heard about how good it is. Can I just jump into S2 without any significant drawbacks?

You'll be missing references to a lot of the cameo characters as well a (really good) sidequest with a loaded Suikoden 1 file.

For the second part though, I have provided this in case you don't mind missing out on the cameo references:
To those who are playing Suikoden I without aiming for all 108 stars or wants the extra content without playing Suikoden I, I found a Suikoden I save file ready to be transferred for Suikoden II from Gamefaqs.

Does it significantly harm the story of S2 if I don't play the first, or is it just some character cameos and a sidequest? I've just been burned out on RPGs lately but this one looks really good.

It doesn't significantly harm the story, but it's much more than just cameos.

The big draw of the Suikoden series is how interconnected everything is, so if you can, I'd highly suggest playing them in order.

No, it will not harm S2's story. The plot of both games are independent from each other, even though S2 takes place three years after S1.

Playing S1 before S2 just enhances your experience in S2, but it's not required.

Is the gameplay of S1 good, then? I really can't stand slow, plodding PS1 JRPGs these days like Breath of Fire 4, Vagrant Story and Persona 2.

I've never played any of those game you listed except for Persona 2, but to me, the turn-based battle in S1 is pretty simple. Attack, rune (magic), unite attack, use items, wait.
The encounter rate is fair too, so don't worry about it. It's not as ridiculous like the one in Persona 2 IS.
S1's inventory system might look like a mess at first, as each character has his/her own inventory. But it's not that bad when you get used to the game.
You can't run/dash in this game, but you can if you put a certain character in your party. Even without the ability to run, the movement does not feel slow at all.

TLDR; the gameplay in S1 is not as polished as S2's, but it doesn't feel slow and never bothered me at all when I played it.

If you have 15-20 hours to spare, play S1 first because it a pretty short game, then you can enjoy S2 to the fullest.

La passione commuove la storia is such an epic song.

There is a also another bugged song
when you go back to the pass and decide Jowy's fate Chant

So basically some of the best vocal songs in the game are bugged out...

What. Even Chant is bugged?!

Goodness gracious. This is ridiculous. Now, I'm happy to have played the PAL version of Suikoden II, but I feel for you. It really is sad that your version of the game has so many problems.

Well there is a way to get the best of both worlds...required emulation though.

Basically you play the PAL version at 60hz, it works out great.

BTW anyone know if the Japanese original has these bugs as well?

So...just started Suikoden II.

Holy. Shit. The sprites in this game are phenomenal, especially the shading effect when you go under trees.

The game feels harder though...in Suikoden 1 I just Auto-Battled through everything, here it seems I need to be much more strategic. I imagine the large amount of options you have now though will make things easier as I play more.

Is the gameplay of S1 good, then? I really can't stand slow, plodding PS1 JRPGs these days like Breath of Fire 4, Vagrant Story and Persona 2.

You can breeze through S1, I did in 20 hours, and most of those hours were because I left the game paused...even faster if you don't care about getting everyone. There's only one point I had to grind, and that was using a great grinding area to get a head-start early on.

You have the Auto-Battle option, which you can use for pretty much any random encounter and quickly level-up party-members, and it's scaled, so it's easy to catch up new party members you have to use at points. Dungeons are rather short and simple, and around the first quarter you're able to instantly warp to any visited location with ease.

Suikoden 1 is a really nice game, honestly, in terms of treating the player well. Maybe a bit too nice though, you don't really need to use a lot of strategy outside of Bosses (and even then only two are really that difficult), and the game gives out money, like literally.

You can still auto battle if you decide to farm double beats from the rabbits in the mountain pass early on. Doubly so if you do the Matilda Glitch.

Only places it will never count is some of the boss battles because they can hit hard and usually multiple people too.

Hey guys, I need some advice

I realize this is not the perfect thread to post this but I recently played Suikoden 1 so that I can play Suikoden 2. I didn't use a guide or anything so naturally I screwed up the whole character Star thing.

I've been trying to download a fully complete suikoden game file but the system says, "Can't copy file onto ps3". I looked it up and apparently it's some sort of protection issued by Sony or someone to prevent people from obtaining trophy's or something....?

I spent over an hour trying to get this to work but with no avail. I wanted to ask if there is anyone here that was in the same situation as I was and got the game file to work.
Or should I just replay the game and make sure to get all 108 Stars? Is it worth it or should I not bother? Not gonna lie, I don't want to replay it again but at the same time, I don't want to miss out on the Suikoden 2 stuff.

I think you're pretty much out of luck as far as I know you either need a method to get the save onto a PSX memory card and a memory card to USB adaptor , that Sony stopped selling years ago or a CFW PS3. I've used both method successfully but its a bit of a pain.

Alright, finally picked this up. I have my Suikoden I save ready to go as well. Anything else I need to be prepared for or prep for? I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly/well in Suikoden I.

The Gilbert Recruitment freaked me out as hell, since it's like five hours later before you can check to see if you actually recruited him successfully if you're unsure what his recruitment scene looks like. :< Luckily, I succeeded, and now I'm pumped that I've got my castle and now I can get into the big recruitment part of the game.

I've been meaning to ask, did anyone from Shining Force move onto work on Suikoden? I was thinking things over, and realized both games felt a bit similar beyond the fact they have a lot of recruitable party members. There's a empire taken over by an evil force that serve as the main protagonist, and the final fight in both is against a giant, three-headed dragon. I guess that's a pretty common cliche, but I got a deja vu feeling from playing Suikoden after playing Shining Force, so I wonder if there's a connection there.

Man , my suikoden 1 file just doesn't want to stick to mu S2 game... It's the third time I restart the game from scratch and it's driving me crazy. I load the S1 file, start the game, see Viktor's and Flik's sword level which seems to be in accordance to my S1 files, but soon after it gets broken. Humphrey doesn't have his windspun armor, Viktor's sword is back to level 6.

I'm starting to feel burnout....I don't want to start a fourth time...

So...the more I play Suikoden II, the more I miss Suikoden 1's great pace.

II has a great plot, more interesting characters, better graphics, etc., but I'm annoyed a bit by the pacing, it seems to drag on much more. There's way more "filler" Dungeons...in Suikoden 1, the only pointless, drawn-out part I felt was that stupid Dwarf Vault which was lame from a story perspective ("prove to me that humans stole something from me by stealing this other thing!"), but in Suikoden II there's the really annoying Sindar Ruins at the beginning, and the Two Rivers Sewer. Not to mention about four times now there's been a segment where you have to run through very bland, confusing woodlands often fighting multiple soldiers as you travel through. And add to that the downright dull Greenhill Academy which was basically constantly going to sleep, finding a trigger for a cutscene, and going to sleep again...I'm 23 hours in, more than the amount it took me to beat Suikoden 1, and it feels like I've barely gotten anywhere. I enjoy everything else about the game, but I loved how Suikoden 1 was just so fast.

I'm about to face Luca Blight now, so hopefully things pick up.

I love both games, but I agree that Greenhill is a major drag.

Can't seem to be able to do all 108 stars and finish Clive's quest at the same time. Just can't do both quick enough.

To do that, you would have to know everything by heart. That means you know where to recruit your characters after a major story event. Skip all the character development flashbacks and most of the regular enemy encounters. Also, Gordon's recruitment is usually the biggest time killer when doing Clive + 108 Star playthrough. What I do is that as soon as I got Viki and the Blinking Mirror, I check back to Kobold Village and buy Ancient Text. If not, buy Crystal Balls from the Forest Village and sell it to the trade vendor at Kobold Village.

Nah Greenhill is fine. Two River I hated. No money for half the time. Sucks.

Keep having to go to sleep, trying to find the quest trigger, annoying girl crushing on Flik, Shin-Teresa back and forth, and the forest random battles. Pretty bad until the end when things finally get moving.

Yayayayay! Good news for all of the people who wanted it for the PSP, better late than never. I hope they release the PS2 games sometime too. I never got a chance to get into them.

Any first time players? What do you guys think?

* Sprite animation is another level, and the beginning of the game is like one big "look at all these awesome sprites!" showcase. Love how individual each character feels in battle, how the sprites are shaded when you go under trees and such (although sometimes the shading seems overdone, or doesn't make sense, and a lot of NPCs are hard to see when they're standing in it).

* A lot of great scenes. Escaping from Kyaro, the Two River Battle, the Knights of Matilda dropping their badges (my favorite so far), it's really cinematic without being overblown. True, there's a bit too many cut-scenes though, compared to the first, but in JRPG terms its pretty tame. Plot's also really nice, although I hesitate to say its the best I've ever seen...although maybe it gets even better post-Luca.

* The dialogue is really good, even though there's a few typos and mistakes (like a few times the wrong portrait pops up), and I was surprised at how humorous both Suikoden 1 and 2 are. 2 sort of takes it up a notch with all the funny responses your character can say, and I appreciate that. I find Nanami to be grating, though, and she really slows down the pace in a lot of places with sort of weak "bonding scenes". I like using her in battle though.

* Characters are far more unique than Suikoden 1, and I feel the game this time around gives you reasons to switch your Party up, while in Suikoden 1 it felt like most of them time there was no incentive to use anyone else...I just stuck with whoever it gave me, and then Flik, Victor, Pahn, Cleo, Gremio, and Kirkis, and ignored everyone else. There's a lot of moments so far in Suikoden 2 where I felt like changing things up a bit, rather than sticking with the same folks.

* The Castle is awesome this time around. Tons of people living there, dialogue constantly changing to reflect current events, more stuff to do...it's really fun, although at the same time the layout is quite confusing, and I still find myself getting lost when I'm looking for a certain character. Suikoden 1 was a bit more serviceable since everything was more or less right next to each other.

* I wish the battle system was upgraded a bit more. It's a bit slower, and slightly more in-depth with more abilities and such, but it's kind of a drag and takes longer than Suikoden 1, where I could Auto-Battle everything with ease. Now that Suikoden 2 is a bit tougher, I can't Auto-Battle through most random encounters it seems, so they get on my nerves since it's usually just spamming a powerful Rune and watching through the animation. A lot of my problems with Suikoden 2 I think is simply because I played 1 right before, and am a bit burned out on the basic system. I wish there was a bit more strategy and real difficulty, I guess, although at the same time not to the point it interferes with enjoying the story.

* I HATE War Battles. In Suikoden 1, they were lame, but short and sweet. Here...well, they're just a drag, a weak Fire Emblem clone that most of the time is just you waiting for something to happen and most of them don't have any music playing. Like there's that one where the refuges are headed to Matilda, and you don't do anything...you have to wait for all them to die, and it took like twenty minutes for the cpu to kill them. Ugh.

There are some easy to miss runes that make the battles go a lot quicker. With the right runes and a bit of luck, you can hit auto-battle and watch Nanami singlehandedly win the battle in about 6 seconds. And what she doesn't get the Hero should be able to clean up.

Double-Beat + Fury is a godly combination. If you can add Killer or Double-Strike, more insane.

That's why characters like Georg and Pesmerga, who are badass, aren't even close to being best in the game (cause they only have 1 rune slot incase that wasn't clear). Oddly enough characters like Hai Yo are some of the best damage dealers in the game.

Oh, and I just mastered my save. All characters are level 55 or above, fully geared (a lot with special rare finds gear), max weapons, every rune slot filled. A decent amount of the characters are level 90+. Full recipes (this is a bitch because being paranoid about japanese stew, shark soup, sandwich, and gengis kahn - i left the cooking match until the end and had to keep checking back every 30-40 minutes for next round). Full Misc Items.

I really wanna play Suikoden 3 but I don't want to drag out my fat PS3.

Yep, doing a runthrough of the game and most my characters have Double-Beat and Fury. It pretty much breaks the game, but I love it.

Oh god when this came out I played it for three days straight. I had a beard and was not adjusted to daylight anymore by the time the credits rolled.

Have fun, first timers.

Suikoden I and II for less than £10?! Now that I've got paid its a done deal, finally get to played the fabled Suikoden II! But first Suikoden I! Just started, I've played the first 2 hours or so before so I'm trying to fly through quickly. Abused Marco's cup game to get about 80,000 bits and brought the best equipment for everyone and sharpened their weapons as much as possible. Still left with about 40,000 but it's time to continue the story!
