Suikoden II |OT| The Affordable 108

I beat Suikoden II yesterday for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn't get the "perfect" ending, but I did get all 108 stars. Kind of pissed on how I missed out on it after reading up about it. Debating on replaying it but I think I'll wait a bit. Definitely a great game and yes I would say overall, it's better then Suikoden 1 but not in every way.

Really, there are two things that I think Suikoden 1 did better then Suikoden 2, and it all has to do with a simplicity factor.

I found the special Star characters stood out more in Suikoden 1 and were more distinguishable. Also, I preferred the "scissor, rock, paper" big army fights over the more tactical "grid" battles in Suikoden 2. Maybe it's just me, but I never got the hang of the tactical mechanics. I'm sure I missed some explanation about the battle mechanics or something. By the end, I just let Apple take over and do the fights automatically.

Pleased I finally got to play the game after a long time wanting to.

It is still rock, paper, scissors, the only difference is your calvery, infantry, archer's and magic users are all separate.

Starting Suikoden 1 now that it's finally released here in Australia, just wondering if there's anything I need to be careful about as far as missables and stuff goes for transferring stuff over to Suikoden 2?

If you intend on going for all 108 characters you may want to see if you find a non-spoiler guide on recruiting characters. Suikoden 1 has a few that are very easy to miss. One in particular has a rather small window to get.

Without using a guide you probably won't get everyone, which means you won't get the best ending, which affects the file that you transfer over to Suikoden II. There's a lot of great guides out there to use, so it shouldn't be hard to find one that suits your needs.

If you want to go guide free, I'll give you some vaguely spoilery hints...
-Don't kill anyone when given the choice
-Keep Pahn's weapon and equipment up to date through the game, you'll see why
-If anyone from your army dies during a war battle, reset and try again
-Search EVERYWHERE for Stars of Destiny

Another question about the transfer, does having characters die or not being recruited carry right on over to Suikoden 2? How does it work starting 2 without a file transfer?
Or is it just needing the characters to get the true ending rather than it being the characters themselves?

Trying to decide if I want to use a guide to find everyone or just play through it casually.

Character deaths (sans one) don't transfer over. There are a few characters that can die in the first Suikoden that will appear in Suikoden II. (There is one exception to this, but the character in question is not recruitable in Suikoden II regardless, only appearing as an NPC in a sidequest.) Recruitment doesn't matter except for whether or not you got all the characters in the first game.

But it's important to remember that any dead or missing characters in the first game will preclude you from the best ending in that game, and that doing a file transfer with the "bad" end will cause you to miss out on some items. You can still get the bonus character/sidequest though with any file transfer. Without the file transfer you can still get the best ending in Suikoden II. The bonus character isn't a Star of Destiny in Suikoden II, and the items you can get from the sidequest aren't required for the best ending.

Does anyone else think that Richmond is a spoof of inspector Columbo?

Also Stallion seems to be a spoof of Sonic.

Any non spoiler way of knowing how to get a perfect ending? I'm trying to get the 108 stars but apparently there's some other conditions, right?

Well... no. You can get the 108 stars without a guide (though some may be well hidden, and a couple are missable), but getting the perfect ending without a guide? That's nearly impossible because of some conditions which you can't possibly guess.

I would advise you to play the game twice, once without a guide, and the second time with a guide in order to unlock the perfect ending. Otherwise you can also make a save right before a very important event flag, and come back to that file later after finishing the game in order to fulfill the conditions (obviously, spoilers about the event flag in question - and only about that, my spoiler won't reveal to you what must be done in order to get the perfect ending):
keep a separate save right before the invasion of Rockaxe by your army and party
.

Finally got back to playing this game. I just went to the Toran Republic. I am trying to get those silly flying squirrels. I have all of them but the last one.

I just ran into a glitch where I couldn't leave a house and had to restart. There goes a hour of gameplay time I have to do over.

What happened to the testing of this game?

The translation also might be the worst I've seen in a RPG.
"You're coming with us one way or another, Nanami." said Nanami.

That happens all the time.

On the good side of things, I recently stumbled into a cool ending just by picking different choices. I thought "no way they're going to let me do this, so I'll just pick this to see what they say" but they did let me go through with it. I wasn't expecting that.

The dialogue was literally random dumps from the files given to the localizers, hence the rampant 2nd person problems and tone issues.

How do I get my Suiko 1 save data on my vita imported into 2? Do I need a PS3 to do some switcheroo?

Edit: I think I figured it out.

So I started playing this. Imported my own perfect run of Suikoden I into the game. I've already got my HQ. I've been on several recruiting drives. Just finished the first visit to Greenwall. Just picked up Hix and Tengaar. Such a lovely OTP. Shoutout to the funny responses in the quest to "cure" Tengaar.

Man, the animals in this game are OP as fuck. I have a double beat rune on Shiro the wolf and he fucks shit up. I farmed like 5 or 6 of those double beat runes, they are so good.

I'm semi worried about the glitch revolving around the cook and recipes. Apparently submitting enemy dropped recipes to him can fuck up any chance of getting the other ones and I've heard doing the cooking contests can do that as well, which I only found out after doing one. I walked in to give him some more recipes (non-monster dropped ones) and another contest was starting up. I immediately shut off the device. Are they always setup to trigger, so if I went in again would it do it again? I heard getting too far into this Iron Chef contests can mess up someone giving you an exclusive recipe only gotten if you import a perfect Suikoden I game as well.

Shiro is so absurdly good with double-beat. I use him every time I play this.

If I remember correctly, the glitch just prevented you from getting recipe #34 in the sewers below two river. Don't turn in any recipes into Hai Yo until you have that recipe drop from the enemies and you should be fine. But I could be wrong since its been like 10 years since I played the game.

Every time I try to play this game I always end up putting it down for a day or two, picking it up again, and getting completely lost. Like I literally have no idea where to go.

I'm used to old RPGs, but for some reason this stumps me every time. I'd kill for a quest marker. Really frustrating, because I dig the game when I know what I'm supposed to be doing.

I think this is probably my favourite Suikoden story and overall one of the best classic 90s RPGs. Definitely top 5.

I still remember that it just blew my mind when I learned the amount of actual, recruitable characters in the game.

Valeria is the better character in battle (by far) and in the war battles too.

Kasumi gets you two characters much earlier though
(Sasuke and Mondo)
and has a personality.

I almost always take Valeria.

What personality if i may ask? I heard she does say something when you get
McDohl
. How is her unite vs. Valerie's?

I think near the end of the first game I was using Valerie a ton (I forget if she was mandatory or not during some of the story)

What's the knife thrower issue?

Valeria FTW

Damn, I might need to reload my save before fighting the worm to choose Valeria. I chose Kasumi, reading a guide mentioned it was easier to get some recruits like Hix mentioned above. I saved in Gregminster and immediately quit, then posting here asking the question lol.

Mostly just
her crush on McDohl
and a few scenes in Rokkaku.

She's pretty meh in battle though, particularly in comparison to Valeria. As for unites:
Kasumi + Mondo - 1.5x damage to 1 enemy, 30% knockdown
Valeria + Anita - 3x damage to 1 enemy, Valeria unbalanced

Even with Valeria going unbalanced, her unite is still vastly superior than Kasumi's. Though if you've got Valeria and Anita in your team you may just be better spamming Falcon Rune for their chance at a crit (5x damage)

I don't know whether to recruit Valerie or Kasumi :S

Did you import a save from the first game?

If yes, I get Kasumi,
because of the scene with McDohl, and as a bonus I get Sasuke and Mondo early.

But Valeria is a better character, yeah.

This is so harddddd!

In a game where I can have 108 characters, why make me pick one to get and one not to get!

And then, there are the monsters. Rulodia is not an star, but if you get her after getting Abizboah (who is a star), you get another extra character, Chuchura. Who is also a non-star character.

The problem? If you recruit her, you use one of your listening crystals, and they you cannot get any other star monster character, making it impossible to get 108 stars.

Is anyone else having trouble transferring the game to PSP? I can transfer all my other PS1 games from my PS3 but Suikoden will not let me. I bought it on the holiday sale and was looking forward to playing. The PSP is on CFW if that matters.
