I know Suikoden II is considered to be the best by the majority, but for me Suikoden V tops it.

Characters_-_Suikoden_5.jpg

The characters are memorable, including the lesser stars of destiny. Everybody has a backstory! Nobody just joins without any story detail. Yes you will definitely need a guide to not miss any character, but it is worth it in my opinion.

Also that music! Aside from Haude village, the OST is amazing! Stormfist and Raftfleet are great just to name a few.

Lastly, the story is not your typical save the world story. It does take a while to build up, but all those initial hours are necessary to set up for the big "event". The story is so good that even IGN named it best story for the PS2 in 2006.

By no means a perfect game, the game deserves a second chance via PSN. Make it happen Konami!

Suikoden V is INCREDIBLE.

Anyone feeling that the series can't have the same magic post-Murayama, need to give this game a shot. Yes, the beginning is slow, but that's not a bad thing at all. It makes what comes next all that much better.

I'll never give up the hope that one day we'll get the true Suikoden sequel this series deserves.

I still hold Suikoden 2 the highest but Suikoden 5 was a fantastic game. It was a lot of fan service. The 2D pixel characters in the loading screens and all that. It felt like Suikoden 3 and 4 was two games where they tried something different. And with Suikoden 3 they did great.
But Suikoden 5 really feels like a sequel to Suikoden 2.

Currently playing through Suikoden 3 to 5 using PCSX2 :D This time I will get all 108 stars in alla games.
Almost done with Suikoden 3. Looking forward playing Suikoden 5 in glorious 1080p.

Even without Murayama, the game had excellent returning characters from older Suiko games like Georg and Killey.

It's more than just returning characters though. This game just completely radiates Suikoden goodness in every way.

It's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo amazing.

This is my personal fav in the series, finished all of them except for the 3rd which I never played. V > II > I > IV.

Such a shame that we'll never see a 6th entry in the series, but at least it went out on a high note, imagine if IV was the last one....

Also Lucretia the best strategist, deal with it silverbergs.

The best Suikoden. Yes, it surpasses even 2 in my eyes.

I *love* Lym. The hero is awesomely styled as well. I also *love* the whooooooooooole introductory story before shit really goes down in the Sun Palace. It has the best Vicky too... well, Vicky in 3 is close enough contender.

HOWEVER!

The BEST INTRO MUSIC is STILL LA MER FROM SUIKODEN IV.

Richard was broken. And Isabel will always be my fave.

And yes, it is my 2nd favorite Suikoden. Loading times be damned.

It's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo amazing.

It really did capture a lot of the themes of Suikoden. Politics, Destiny, Sacrifice, Friendship and Family...

It had some solid twists and turns as well. Definitely a return to form for the series...

Great game but took soooooooooooooo long for the story to get compelling.

Whaaaaaa? No no no no no. The fact that it's in no rush to deliver us proper escalation before shit goes down is one of the best things about Suikoden V.

The long intro is what makes the emotional payoff during the whole chaos in Sun Palace is so satisfying. I *really* feel for the characters.

I also like the beginning. You are not thrown into the moment the shit hits the fan as with most RPG:s. It´s like a 10 hour prologue. But I now several who never got through that and think the game is boring. Some understand it's greatness. But felt it was to slow or complex. Same reason they don't read the "Game of thrones books".

Man, don't do this to me. I want to play it, but it's up to like $60 for the disc only

I remember walking into an EBgame store at one point, saw this off the rack for $30 new, and picked it up. The clerk looked at me, and me what it was. I just told him that I was a fan of the series and walked out.

There's nothing stopping Konami from putting Suikoden III, IV, Tactics, and V as PS2 Classics, they should really do it. I'd double dip in that ccase.

I was talking to someone on GAF the other day about how similar Suikoden and Game of Thrones are.

If Konami was smart, they'd realize this too. The lore for this series is so deep and rich, and to leave it languishing in limbo is outrageous.

Probably my third favorite Suikoden game. II > III > V > I > IV The beginning is veeeery slow, it takes several hours but it picks up really fast afterwards. I recommended it to a friend but he couldn't get past how boring it was initially and never got to the good stuff.

Man, I love this game so much. The story was great with a lot of drama and political intrigue. The characters were memorable. My only regret was recruiting every single character save for one (and thus being locked out of the true ending), because I couldn't be asked to grind for hours.

Also, this game probably has the longest introductory sequence I've ever played in any game. It literally lasts for like 10 hours, although I still loved it.

Loved this game so much-- the character designs, the music, the drama, the over-arching plot. I have a soft spot for Lady Sialeeds still, probably my favorite character in the series as well. This is my all time favorite Suikoden. It's funny how people are always talking about 2 as the definitive game in the series, but V, followed by III are much better in my eyes. I personally think that most people haven't played this one so they don't know what they're missing. Too bad this was the last one, I really wanted to see Harmonia >in person<. The series could've gone places, amazing places.

Since Konami is so busy licking Kojima's ass nowadays to actually bother doing anything not related to him, the only possible scenario of a Suikoden revival is if he himself takes an interest in it.

But then again, he's also so busy in making Metal Gear 2346340236905694230564230564230.

I legitimately don't know what Konami makes anymore besides Metal Gear.

I really don't.

The level up system is also great in most Suikoden games. With such a huge cast, the "catch up" levelling system really works well.

I have the PS2 CD of this but not able to play because of time. I need to put this in my backlog then

Always wanted to play it, but I simply can't find a copy (well, at a price I'm willing to pay for a PS2 game, and that's NOT ~$60).

The game that cemented Georg Prime as one of the best badasses in video games. He's always been an underwhelming character for me in Suiko II, especially since he looked a bit pudgy there, but in Suiko V, you're suddenly "Whoa, so that's why he was such a legend."

When I saw the trailer for this game, with its traditional top down view and six person battles, I completely flipped out. Especially when I found out it took place in Falena, which they'd been name dropping since the first game. I then rationalized that something had to make it fail to meet my expectations after the lackluster Suikoden IV.

It absolutely met my expectations. What an amazing game. I love how they tied in the bit about Georg's backstory from Suikoden II's Richmond investigation
about him assassinating the queen of Falena
. Suiko VI is a distant pipe dream, now, but I'd love to see this on PSN.

Damn they really brought the franchise crashing down with Suikoden IV huh. Damn.

And being such a Suikoden nerd that I am, I even liked Suikoden IV, especially La Mer and Snowe's character development.

God if Konami ever releases Suikoden V as a PS2 classic I will buy it in a heartbeat even if they charge me 60 bucks or a 100 bucks for it.

Suikoden more than any JRPG I know seems like they take a lot of influence from Fantasy Novels, which I read a lot.
The whole consistent world and war instead of "evil dude want to destroy the world" plot.

I love Suikoden. But a Suikoden with ever darker theme, less comical characters and more inspiration from RR Martin or Robin Hobb could be popular with todays gamers.

it's amazing how well all characters are integrated in this game. it's a work of art. unlike haud. i think i watched the TGS reveal trailer like 50x back then, like a good metal gear trailer.

only the load times were painful.

5 is the best PS2 game, FYI 3 was never released in Europe, we did get 4 and Tactics though.

I had my aunt import S3 from the states for me. She had to run around New York for hours trying to find a copy. Then I got the game one week before I got a console that could play it. I sat staring at the game.

BTW How many endings did Suikoden 5 have? A lot I remember. Of course they had liek the good 108 stars ending and the not 108 stars ending. But I remember if you died in some places, like in duels or something, they had endings for that as well. Not just "Give up/Don't Give up"

Uhhh... Suikoden I, II, III, and V all have instances of genocide, poisoning, atrocity, ritual sacrifice and other war crimes... I mean things could always get darker I guess...

I know. But still less comical characters/moments even though I love a lot of them. Not sure I would prefer it. Just think that gamers today don't want that.
The basic story is often pretty dark.

I loved the art in Suikoden V soooo much that I ended up buying this (the right one called Fs5):

It's Kaori Fujita's artbook and it has a bunch of cool art, even if it's stuff that wasn't from GS5. Really loved it and it was money well-spent.

Otherwise, I'm starting to see what Xelinis was saying about the game. I do still really like it and the formation system, and I think the soundtrack is very good. The pacing is off, but I remember the first time playing it, I didn't want the game to end.

Kinda wonder what I'd think of the game if I play it now, though. :x

I think there's 11. There were a bunch of premature endings like
Decide to become king with the Barrows, lose against Roy or gizel, died in the Queen's campaign
and several more. It's been forever since I last played the game

One of my favorite RPGs of all time, indeed i think i love all the Suikoden games, i miss Sergeant Joe from Suikoden 3 and Jeane...and everyone :(

Will they make a new Suikoden? man why developers stop making awesome series like this one :(

Recruiting
Euram Barrows
as one of 108 is one of the best things about Suikoden V.

Also, Luserina is so nggggggggh, too bad the Prince ain't going for her :/

Suiko 5 wasnt just a great story, it was a story filled with a whole bunch of great stories.

The Sialeeds stuff was very well written and unexpected, really stood out as a unique character

The Army Battles in Suikoden 5 was really great as well as I can remember. Great new take on the battle system. Did not like the system in Suikoden 3 very much.

Oh and how you could switch position in regular battles. The original 6 character formation was of course in there but there was a lot of them to try out to find your style.

I think it's the best army battle system in the series.

this is the only Suikoden game I haven't played yet. At the time I didn't get to it and I haven't since.

I think I will remedy that situation. Especially as it seems to wash away the bad taste Suikoden 4 left. I am kinda hyped now

Paging Aeana.

I'm actually with her in thinking that it's the most disorganized type of full-scale battle system in the series, and we ended up comparing Type-0's poor excuse for full-scale battles which were worse. :x
