Suikoden V Appreciation Thread

Second best Suikoden after 2. But god I hated how slow the game was. I think it was the loading times mainly.

My problem with the game :
1. Hate the girly MC and cute anime feel especially MC's guardian(don't remember her name) and his sister (she's annoying as fuck).
2. First world problem in every suikoden series aka the difficulty.

Georg Prime rulezzzzz

My opinion : S2 > S1 > S5 > S3 > S4

C'mon people. Easily the best thing about V. I really wish
she got the Twilight Rune earlier, and that she wasn't forced out of the party for a sizable portion of the game.

The lengthy introduction really helped to nurture my interest in the story / setting the the first time through, although it's actually proving to be a barrier to me replaying it. Not that I'm big on revisiting JRPGs anyway. I'd have to get all 108 Stars again if I did, for reasons that'll be obvious to anyone who's finished it.

If I had clearer memories of playing II I'd be able to say whether V was my favourite of the series. I know I'd definitely rank it above IV and I.

Agreed A Huge Battleship, Lyon was awesome.

Loved this game so much-- the character designs, the music, the drama, the over-arching plot. I have a soft spot for Lady Sialeeds still, probably my favorite character in the series as well. This is my all time favorite Suikoden. It's funny how people are always talking about 2 as the definitive game in the series, but V, followed by III are much better in my eyes. I personally think that most people haven't played this one so they don't know what they're missing. Too bad this was the last one, I really wanted to see Harmonia >in person<. The series could've gone places, amazing places.

Yeah, I love V so damn much. Loved so many of the characters especially Lyon and ofcourse Georg was a badass and Miakis (I remember one of Miakis' first action scenes being so cool too) and Sialeeds was so well done as you said, also the voice cast was great. I even loved the long intro completely felt like I knew/felt stuff about the characters by the time everything really went down like Laughing Banana and MyWhiteRequiem said.

I wanted this game so bad I imported in from the usa before pal release. I thought they dragged it out too long tbh and that last maze like dungeon was so annoying, especially with the weakened parties you had to use against the suped up enemies. It is a shame it didn't sell well as we will never see suikoden 6.

The best suikoden in PS2. I still think Suikoden II is the best, but only because Suikoden 2 have cooking minigame,

Yes, Lyon is great!

The Army Battles in Suikoden 5 was really great as well as I can remember. Great new take on the battle system. Did not like the system in Suikoden 3 very much.

Oh and how you could switch position in regular battles. The original 6 character formation was of course in there but there was a lot of them to try out to find your style.

i thought army battles in 3 were better. you could feel the strenght of every party member. gave you enough incentive to level them up a little - give every character a fair chance.

it was the loading times. battles were fast-paced.

3 is my personal favorite but 5 was super legit. What a great series overall.

My copy of 1 got stolen by a "friend" who borrowed it and then moved away next day -_-

Yeah but the feel of a huge army was gone :(

Hopefully PCSX2 will help speed up the loading times when I play it next time..

This game solidified Georg as my favorite Suikoden character. 5 did the best job of making me care about all of the characters I encountered since 2 (which is where I think 4 failed the most).

<3 Miakis & Sialeeds

When it was announced Georg was coming back that was one of the things I was most hyped about before. Some of his history was known from Suikoden 2 so looked really forward to it. Didn't like him as much in 5 as in 2 but one of my favorites anyway. Used him whenever he was available.

The game was a real return to form after IV. It gave me hope for the future of the series.

How about that future eh?

:(

It's about time for me to replay it, this time on PCSX2.

Its the only one i didn't finish because the loading times killed the experience for me. i did like the story though.

I legitimately don't know what Konami makes anymore besides Metal Gear.

I really don't.

They make Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Lots...and lots....and lots of Yu-Gi-Oh cards. Seriously, I don't think there's another TCG that releases so much product.

But video game wise? Someone had an E3 bingo card and under Konami they just put "FUCKING NOTHING". The only way they could've been more accurate was "Metal Gear Solid and...FUCKING NOTHING".

Suikoden V is very good.

FTFY. :)

Anyway, yeah Suikoden V is probably my favorite game from my favorite J-RPG series. Devoid of a lot of the stupid cliches that make me hate J-RPGs, with it's own unique world and artstyle and a story that isn't just "kid from humble origins saves the world".

Also:

- Jeane and Viki are both awesome
- Lucretia best tactician
- Sialeeds is a freaking boss.
- Zerase remains my favorite spellcaster character in any series that isn't Lunar.
- Damn, there were a lot of really cool females in this game. Although, given the plot that makes a weird kind of sense.

Brilliant game, possibly my favorite in the series. Only shocking downgrade were the graphics. 3, and especially 4, looked better IMO.

Definitely one of my favorite Suikoden games. I would kill to be able to play this again. Do it Konami!

Edit: If I'm forced to rank.. S2 > S5 = S3 > S1 >>>>>> S4

I adored the game, but it was also infuriating. It's a great Suikoden overall, but it's slow and bloated, which kills the snappy feeling of the older games (to be fair, the other PS2 games were slower than the PS1 games too). I loved the depth and the characters, but the main villain was weak and too black and white for the series. He had no redeeming qualities, even if most of the other antagonists were great.

The frequent loading delay, the massive dungeons with high encounter rates (which still beat the bland corridors of 3 and 4) and the slow burn start really bogged the game down and made parts of it annoying to play. The game was also really glitchy and I was glitched out of recruiting Killey, which really pissed me off since I was so excited to recruit him again (and it also prevented me from getting the 108 stars).

That said, it was beautiful, had tons of awesome, powerful runes (not like the gimped runes of 4, which even removed the defining instant kill abilities of the Soul Eater), had a good story. an ambitious, if unwieldy mass combat system, and even managed to tweak the dueling system a bit. I would be thrilled to ever get a similar Suikoden in my lifetime (on the off chance that Konami ever releases one again.)

It's about time for me to replay it, this time on PCSX2.

I´m gonna do that as soon as I am done with a PCSX2 Suikoden 3 and 4 run. Almost done with S3.
I hope it improves the load times as well as the graphics.

Always like the idea of Raftfleet btw. The floating city. Think that is really cool. I did not like Haud Village at all. Especially the music there.

Suikoden V is amazing! The art, the story, the music, the characters, love it all!

For me Suikoden V = Suikoden II. Though I love them all. I, III, and IV, plus IV-2 (Rhapsodia), Suikogaiden I and II :)

I need Suikoden VI... ;-;

I didn't stick around long enough. I played maybe 8 hours of it, but wasn't in the mood, so I quit. I really should go back. I know it's supposed to deliver after the 10 hour mark or so.

Well, one of these days.

Even though the loading times was too long. At least they had these!

It was a nice recovery from IV, but it never reached the heights of the PS1 games. It was slow, poorly paced, and overly long. It's probably my least favorite mainline game other than IV.

And Lucretia is the worst character in the entire series.

S2 > S1 > S3 > S5 > S4

Agree with OP.

Love, love, love Suiko 5. The ending felt a little too abrupt no matter how many stars you got, but it was indeed an awesome journey.

Just Georg Prime alone made it worthy in my eyes. I also liked the details it brought into the world of Suikoden, and how diverse your army was in the end. Ending seemed a bit rushed, but it still stands shoulder to shoulder with rest of the series (minus IV, of course).

This could have been one of the best game in the series if it wasn't for the villains. It has the most incompetent villains in any game I've seen. The entire game is you beating the crap out of them by doing what the strategist says. I kept waiting for there to be a plot twist where they actually had some secret plan in store and they're not just being your punching bag but it never arrives. Consequently there is zero tension. Did anybody else feel this way?

I really liked Suikoden V my two biggest criticism is that in the end game , you're facilities end up spread in a really awkward way (since they moved some of the characters to a different location to make setting up for the final dungeon easier but left most of the facilities at your base) and that it at times felt like someone had a "Core Suikoden Features" checklist that they were running down, these were done well, but I guess it felt like they were trying to hard on some level ?

No one can live up to the name of best villain other than you lucablight

By far the most dramatic Suikoden game, it's like every scene you watch, there will be tears.

2 > 5 > 1 > 3 >>>>>> 4

That's because Lucretia is a perfect character who never does wrong and whom even the villains are in awe of.

Amazing game. One of the best games I've played in PS2.

Graphics were a little disappointing (at that time), but overall was a truly great jrpg. The story starts slowly, but gets better for moments. Characters didn't suck and there was a ton of posibilities to make teams.

Lucretia's godlike status was hilarious. She even surprises herself. I ain't even mad.

The villains really were incompetent though. The Godwins acted all shady and shit but had nothing. Younger Godwin went down like a bitch.

Yea, i really liked Lucretia's design, but "perfect" characters like that are kind of annoying in how they kill suspense, yea. There wasn't even an explanation for her knowing a lot of the '(eally really important) stuff she knew. And she knew basically everything ever.

That and that one paint truck crash town with the terrible music and the load times together rob it of first place for me, but second isn't bad and it's a really, really good game. I'd love the series to continue, but I don't expect it will (unless they pull something like Breath of Fire 6 which would be far, far worse than no sequel at all).

The loading in this game was unbearable for me. I forget how far I got in it, but I tried twice. I would still give this game a chance if I didn't have to deal with the god-awful loading.

The loading times really fought against me liking this game, but I ended up loving it anyway. I should play through it again sometime, but it'd have to be on emulator. I don't think I could go through it all again with all that waiting.

Yeah, I don't remember there being any points in Suiko5 where your strategist is outplayed. There was also no badass soldier on the enemy side for you to fear that I remember. First game had Teo, second had fucking Luca Blight as well as Leon to outplay your strategist, third had
spoiler just in case for whatever reason, Luc
, four I didn't play, and five had.. some guy you could beat in a duel early in the game I think? It's been a while. But the point stands for me at least that it wasn't as memorable.

Suikoden 5 is a great game. If not loading times problem and very slow beginning, I would say it's the best. After I played it I had in such a high expectations for 6th... which was never made.
I don't understand it, really, they make an awesome game... and then abandon series. Why, Konami, why (._.)

For those that couldn't play because of loading problems, you get somewhat used to it, just stick with it for first couple of hours and you can't put it away, if even you wanted it. It's that good.

I enjoyed 5, but not as much as the rest of you. I remember the story being alright, but it really annoyed me that none of the characters were miss-able. Don't know why.

I also didn't like the music as much as in previous titles. Definitely think the game is solid, but my list of best Suikodens would go like this.

II > III > I = 5 > IV

I can honestly say that the loading times did not bother me one bit.

Yes, they were frequent, but anyone that would forgo an awesome game like this because of them is only hurting themselves.

What do you mean none of the characters were missable? You could easily miss a lot of them!

I don't know any Suikoden game without missable characters, and I played them all multiple times.
