I'm not commenting on Wanwa as I haven't seen it, but to paint "plot, dialogue, and themes" as something only important to literature and not a vital part of visual media as well is quite misguided. It's perfectly reasonable to watch a film primarily for those things.

It's only a vital part of films that use it as a primary method of communication with the audience. Usually, these are adaptations of literature or borrow heavily from a literary tradition. Dialogue could never be a vital part of visual media in general because plenty of visual media just doesn't have it.

Even sculptures and paintings use subjects, but the subjects are an excuse to create the piece. A bad painter can't get by on the strength of a subject if the painting is bad. Wanwa's subject is very simple -a child's imagination- and the animation builds from that. Criticising it as if it was a literary piece for lacking in fleshed out narrative/character makes no sense.

I agree with this, and I'm obviously hampered here because I don't know how effective Wanwa is at any of this. I just didn't care for all of those things I mentioned to be dismissed as belonging in the realm of literature.

Now I feel the need to watch Genius Party.

I agree that it is silly to say that visual mediums should get a pass for not having a story because it's not "literature". It is far more meaningful to instead say that some formats serve different purposes, and concepts of traditional "narrative" or "dialogue" aren't always required. Having a theme is always important though, because without that there is simply not purpose to anything.

Even with regards to art pieces, I don't think it's wise for anyone to take a position where any negative criticism is laughed at and ignored. What I hope to see more of is people who have negative views on stuff which is generally held in high regard expressing the critique in ways which are meaningful. If a piece failed to engage, or you feel that it wasn't successful at carrying the message it wanted to, where did it fail? Saying something has no "plot" or no "dialogue" is not good criticism, but if the theme felt hollow, it would be interesting to know why to get a better understanding of that person's perspective.

Just felt like this quote was relevant again.
Mamoru Oshii said:
I would hope that people would not forget that there are many ways to enjoy a movie, and a much greater range of film styles than what we are currently seeing on the screen...

There is little freedom in anime because if your anime does not conform to a certain pattern, the inevitable reaction is "Well, what the hell is this?" But such a response isn't painful only for the production side. It also represents a major loss for the audience. Considering the great amount of time, effort, and money expended to make a movie and the high ticket prices paid to see it, I think the audience would get more out of their viewing experience if they adopted a "We're ready for anything!" kind of attitude.

Instead, they are peeking out at anime through a narrow slit - like the window of a tank. No matter how you look at it, that's a real waste. I think it would be better instead to open the hatch wide, stick your head out, and take a good look all around...

Gangsta ep. 1-2

Holy crap, I didn't realize how bloody and violant this series was. I mean, the first three episodes are violant as hell with bodies all over the place. You have corrupt cops, hookers, drug dealers and "tags" doing as they please in the city. Even with all that action and violance, it's weird having such a calm sounding EP after you watch some guy get cut to pieces, lol. This one will be interesting to catch up on and follow.

Cornbread has seen the light.
Gangsta is only getting better with each episode, so you have something to look forward to :)

Hello GAF! I have returned from my mission and 2 year hiatus from anime and stuff ; don't know if anyone remembers me. Maybe cajun or corvo if he's still lurking in this thread.

I have a lot of shows ahead of me guh

Holy crap you're back son!

Chihayafuru showed me the way. Karuta is best sport and I won't hear it any other way!

e:
You know, can't be that long until we get a somewhat serious anime on an e-sport, most likely a moba. Hmm...with how filthy rich Valve and Riot are, they could even sponsor the shows. I mean it's rather questionable if that would result in any ROI but I want it to happen either way!

Go どた II
You remind me that i just recently read manga about Daigo Umehara. Maybe one day some studio will adapt it.

I finally decided to give Oreimo a try because I felt like it, and from what I've seen it's actually a fairly competent show (accidental little sister groping played for comedy notwithstanding).

The theme of Kirino being the model girl but having a hobby that's looked down upon by society, and her brother's attempts to help the people around her accept that side of her as well makes sense and has been handled well so far using a good mix of drama and comedy. The cast has good chemistry, and in the slew of episodes I've watched so far I haven't seen any attempts at shipping Koyusuke and Kirino together, which was one of the things I was wary about

I really hope things stay that way, since I'm okay with weird and somewhat awkward situations happening every now and then, but flat-out shipping brother and sister would certainly get too creepy for me and might turn the show itself into a siscon fantasy.

Stay away from the S2 OVAs

I love reading an innocent's mind's impression of this show.

Get ready.

I expected a story about Kirino coming out of the closet on being a fan of eroges thanks to her brother's support and being accepted by the people around her, but I guess these posts point to her lying to Kyousuke when he asked her why she was so much into little sister stuff.

Oh well, so much for a story not based around Kirino being into siscon eroges because she actually wants to get into those kinds of situations herself...

Speaking about Gangsta,:

Gangsta - 07

Oh wow. Did not expect that in the slightest. This practically turns their relation completely on the head.
And damn, are those flashbacks brutal. Seriously, the scene where
Nicolas gouges out young Woricks eye
hurt just by watching.
And things in the present seem to get serious as well. Nicolas noticed the
Tag-killers
. Things are probably going to get ugly next episode.

For real you would think that they are
best friends, but after what we saw? Just what the heck are they lol.

Makes me think that
Nicolas constantly looks for strong tag users as so he can finally die already.

Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade

hqdefault.jpg

The world of Jin Roh is certainly not a happy one. After Japan suffered large losses in WW2, the country pursued an economic policy that all but seemingly abandoned the average citizen. (It's actually not all that clear which side won WW2, though the German weaponry shown so heavily in the film doesn't bode well for the Allied forces.) To deal with the civil unrest, or more directly, the terrorist hiding among them, the Japanese government formed the Kerberos Panzer Cops. I would almost describe the world of Jin Roh as an empty world. Other than a few scenes, you get the sense that very few people are happy in this version of Japan. People either seemed to be furious rioters, nervous cops, sleazy backstabbing officials, or people just going through life half asleep.

tumblr_mww8ewj1ap1stgzqbo4_500.gif

People to run away from really fast if you've broken the law.

You may read all that, and think Jin Roh was an action movie, and while it certainly has action scenes, it's more of a political thriller mixed with a really depressing romance. (I'm not even sure if romance is the right word to be honest.) Our main male lead, Kazuki Fuse, speaks very little, but says a lot with his actions as well with his fairly disturbing delusions. Our main female lead emotes more, but is perhaps even more broken in some regards than our male lead. You get the feeling that both of them want to escape, to get away from their lives, but they can't, or in one case, refuse to.
They like most people in this film, betray each other, both of them, really. And while both of them seemingly show regret for their actions, it's not enough to stop the ending we all know is coming.

While I don't know if I'd say that Jin Roh is one of my favorite anime movies, it's one that's gonna stick with me. It's a cruel movie in many regards, that type that doesn't give the audience what they want. There's no real catharsis to be had here folks, but you'll appreciate the world it peers into, even if it leaves you bitter afterwards.

Jin-Roh probably has the best animated gun porn ever.
One of my favorite animated movies. Too bad I can only find shitty .gifs of the machine gun belt loading.

Oh right, I was supposed to check Jin-Roh eons ago. Hopefully it's better than Ninja Scroll.

Mushishi Zoku Shou 04

I can't say that this episode's story managed to carve itself into my memory, quite opposite actually but the darker than usual visuals and tone made up for it. It kinda feels like Ginko became a much more expressive character in the second season. Outside of his usual, mellow and happy persona he can get angry, afraid or tell someone off coldly.

I read Getenrou, by the author of And Yet the Town Moves, a couple of days ago and thought it was really good (better than And Yet the Town Moves, that's for sure). It'd work really well as an OVA or a film because of its tight story and short length, and I'm sad it hasn't gotten one yet. I know that a lot of anime adaptions of properties that started as mangas are made solely to promote the manga, but it does seem odd to me that many adaptions seem to be covering material that is serialised and, in some cases, unfinished. Even if a manga is finished, an adaption would still serve to promote it, as we can see with Ushio and Tora this season. There's a whole wealth of manga out there that, while they probably wouldn't work as a televised series, would work really well as a movie or OVA, so why doesn't it seem like there are many being adapted these days? Am I simply not looking in the right places? Is it viewed that, financially, it's only worth adapting a manga if it's going to be televised?

Hey! Welcome back! I hope the mission was fruitful. Where did you end up serving?

And I am on break now so I don't have a lot of time but when I get home I'll compile a list of stuff over the last two years of what you have missed.

Again welcome back!

Cajun has been permed :\

What!?!? When did this happen? He was like our mascot. Taken away from us too soon.

WAT too soon! D:

edit: skimmed through some old pages ... looks like there was a whole string of bannings lately ... I don't even know anybody anymore :/

in any case I've been inactive here and on anime since November 2013; what have I missed

A lot of new faces but ANIMEGAF is mostly the same. The old people's will lives on in the new generation of AnimeGAF

Things around here definitely aren't the same without him. I consider myself to be new in here compared to most of you folks, but Cajun was a great member that I will miss for sure. He always replied to everyone whenever he could.

Wait, Cajun was banned? Was one of the few users that would try to reply to nearly every post in here, even the ones that wouldn't have gotten any love otherwise...

Still, this thread name has been tempting Fate from the very start.

You don't get to say anything about Chihayafuru until you get to it in our watch bet. You'll change your tune once you see it. ;P

Gundam Build Fighters has awesome 2D robots fighting.

Chihayafuru I assume does not since "mecha" is not one of its genres.

Therefore Gundam Build Fighters wins by default. :p

Even if I do find Chihayafuru amazing (which I probably will judging from what I've heard), I'll still value GBF over it.

It's just one of those shows that sits up there with TTGL in a sacred sanctuary of hot blooded characters and 2D robots.

Things that grind my gears: So there's this kickstater for a game called VANITY. And it has some of the most generic, uninspired "inspired by anime" art style and character designs I've seen in a while. No disrespect to the actual artistic talent it takes to make anything that looks halfway decent but it feels like they barely tried and are trying to run a play from the "it looks like anime so give us money" playbook. I especially loved the "trained in Japan" (what is that supposed to make the generic anime style more authentic?) and "trained by top men in the animation industry" (that they don't name) bits.

If "inspired by" just turns out to be "the most generic and cliche interpretation of your inspiration" then you done goofed.

Eccentric Family 03

I think I liked this episode a bit better, I enjoy the MC/Ben Ten stuff more then the other stuff. Still, I don't know if I am enjoying this a lot. Should I stick with it?

Gintama 258

Oh yes. I like where this arc is going.
