Sunset Overdrive: 900p/30fps

After playing my first 900p game in Watch Dogs, I'll say it's pretty noticeable.

So it's kinda disappointing to hear this, oh well I guess.

BF4 was only noticeable for me during the driving segment with all the power lines. Otherwise (and with their motion blur implementation) it didn't detract from the scene.

Don't. Don't say this bullshit, please. The difference of pixel number it's vastly more. This non sense needs to end from awhile.
Its completely accurate and I've explained why already.

480p to 720p is a much bigger jump than 720p to 1080p. The number of pixels does not tell the full story at all.

Diminishing returns actually is a real thing here when we're talking about resolution jumps.

I'm not sure what's wrong with having standards. I think expecting 1080p/60fps is a good thing. If it get more devs to do it the better. I'm more disappointed in the frame rate than the resolution. Action games really benefit from 60fps.

The game looks fantastic, really looking forward to it. Couldn't give a crap if it's 900/30. The priority is gameplay and whether the graphics (and style) look good.

From what I've seen, confidence is high.

Not sure what this has to do with anything...

It's showing you that diminishing returnz is just a fable(at least in gaming) and we'll see incredible gains over last gen. Go back to gaf threads from 2005 and 2006 and people argued the exact same things.

You do realise that lighting, materials and animation is what makes that footage so incredible?

And the poly count and incredible amount of detail on Drake's face and body.

I'm not sure this image proves what you think it proves. I mean, I could argue that the jump from 1 to 3 looks as impressive as the jump from 3 to 4, even though it's two games on the same hardware.

The jump from 3 to 4 is bigger than the jump from 1 to 3. It's not even close, everything else looks like a cartoon. We're at the point where we're nearing CGI level quality.

It depends on what series you are looking at.

GTAIV -> GTAV = much better graphics, improved performance and going from a sub-HD res to 720p on the PS3.
Forza 2 -> Forza 4 = Same res, much better graphics.
Gears of War -> Gears of War 3 = Same res, better performance, much better graphics
Halo 3 -> Halo 4 = Sub-HD to 720p, better AA solution, improved graphics.
Uncharted -> Uncharted 3 = Same res, better AA, better performance, much better graphics.
PGR3 -> PGR4 = Sub-HD to 720p, much better graphics.
Tomb Raider Underworld -> Tomb Raider 2013 = Sub-HD to 720p, much better graphics.
Mass Effect -> Mass Effect 3 = Same res, much better performance and graphics
Splinter Cell: Conviction -> Splinter Cell: Blacklist = Sub-HD to 720p, better graphics
FIFA 2006 -> FIFA 2014 = Sub-HD to 720p, much better graphics
Oblivion -> Skyrim = Sub-HD to 720p, much better graphics.
You're correct that resolutions didn't change much throughout the generation, but there was a trend near the end for performance compromises.

I wonder how many of the really disappointed members actually own an X1.

You should ask them. It would be better than throwing a blanket statement out there. I'll start. I own one, have the day one achievement, and am disappointed because this is an exclusive which I thought would be pushed to the max on all fronts. I'll still most likely get it but I want to wait for reviews after seeing DR3's framerate issues.

What about every Call of Duty game? Sleeping Dogs? Battlefield? Titanfall? Watch Dogs? Diablo? Crysis 3? Far Cry 3?

Game after game compromising resolution near the end of the cycle.

I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of those are PC franchises or were built first for PC and then shoehorned onto consoles.

I don't own an Xbox One
miss FORZA so much :( *tear*
but I hope people can still have great fun with the game. It's a shame it's not 1080p but that should not remove the fun factor in which, many players tend to focus. Here's hoping to everyone having a good time when it releases. :)

Can one play other characters in campaign mode?

I don't believe so. The main character is fully customisable though, choice of genders, look, clothes, etc.

Y'know, I maintain the DR3 frame-rate issues weren't as bad as people claimed. There was some slowdown in certain points, but it mostly maintained a decent frame-rate.

How do you know it wasn't pushed to the max on all fronts? People make way too much of the numbers and ignore all the other facets of what makes games look good. This game could easily have been made 1080p if they wanted to. It just would have cost in other areas.

So apparently if you're disappointed in this news, you probably weren't going to get the game at all. What a wonderful statement. I didn't know you were so in tune with what people are purchasing.

Christ.

Do you really think it's unreasonable to assume that some people taking part are more interested in the tech and platform topic than would be buyers of the actual game in question? This is a performance stat thread, so that's sort of presumed to be the nature of the conversation. Was the comment you responded to really so toxic that you criticize them for even suggesting the idea as part of a pleasantry to the developer behind the game? His words weren't dismissing all disappointment about the info as being insincere.

You said "some" people. He said "most" people complaining weren't going to get the game. If you don't see how it is absurd to paint a majority of people who might be disappointed with this news as never getting the game, then we simply disagree.

The first footage definitely wasn't 900p. Shit had jaggies all over. E3 gameplay looked much cleaner so good for them.

I don't understand how people can enjoy games at 900p this gen.

Seriously, people who are playing BF4, Watchdogs, and Hardline beta on PS4 should fucking be ashamed of themselves.

Probably the same way that people many enjoyed 600p games last gen, probably not even realizing what the native resolution was. And still probably wouldn't even realize half the time this generation if it wasn't constantly being pointed out to them.

Not true. For example BF3 on the PS3 was ugly as shit and running at a low resolution compared to what a decent gaming right could do and it was one of the most enjoyable shooters I played that gen.

Why does the resolution even matter? Like Ryse, the game looks amazing and better than almost every game out. Has everyone forgotten that resolution is only one part of what makes games look good?

Resolution matters because TVs only have one fixed resolution. Upscaling looks especially bad to some people especially if they have a very large screen.

Game looks great, if the FPS is stable I personally don't see the problem.

Granted higher is better for resolution and FPS, but those that seem to be trembling at the keyboard in disgust and acting like it has ruined their week need to get a little bit of a grip on reality I think.

Disappointed is one thing, but this seems like an entirely new animal.

Looking forward to playing the game if I ever pick up an Xbone.

You're not really disagreeing with me here. ;)

BF3 basically was native 720p, just with a few, unnoticeable black bars on the sides.

I know it was, but an FPS like that I'd want to play at 60fps and 1080p ideally on a PC. Still, I enjoyed it a lot on the PS3.

This gen I'm expecting at least 1080p and clean image quality. So far I've been getting that from Destiny, Killzone, and NBA 2K14. I hope developers keep it up. 60 FPS would nice for certain games, but I'm not going be extremely pissed over it. By games are aiming for 60 and most racing games will be so I should be satisfied.

Welp, the 900p games I've played on my 1080p 55" LCD are: Ryse, Watch_Dogs, BF4. They all looked good on my HDTV. Some aliasing is present (with Ryse being the cleanest), but I don't know if it's from the upscaling or the game just having aliasing, as Forza 5 is 1080p and is littered with jags.

Sunset Overdrive looks fantastic graphically in the videos I've watched. Good res choice and AA for the game it seems.

On the top and bottom. :P

You're right. Games should just go back to being sub-480p. Because, hey, why does resolution even matter?

When we began this project, Marcus and Drew laid out their design goals for the game: This included an open world, a LARGE number of enemies on screen, and effects that could rival a KISS concert (plenty of explosions, pyro, fireworks etc).

Everything has gone towards those goals. The game looks and plays awesome and hitting the game's vision and design goals was more important than an arbitrary resolution

I would say that you have achieved your design goals and then some.

You don't have to explain yourself. Many of the people that are "disappointed" probably weren't interested in the game anyway. Tell the crew to keep up the good work. Really looking forward to this game.

Agreed. Keep making the game the best you can make it. Looks fantastic so far!

Wait, no he didn't. From your own quote of his post:

Many of the people that are "disappointed" probably weren't interested in the game anyway.

No. No. NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Why oh why, not SSOD too, for the love of god Insomniac how could you fuck up so bad and not prioritize 60 fps for fluid gameplay and responsiveness for a game like Sunset Overdrive!
My most wanted XBone title, one of the sure thing I was gonna play this fall, just blown away, dreams have been shuttered, nothing remains.

Last Guardian a no show?
Pfttt! THIS is the worst news to come out of E3. Goddamn it!

Cue the '30fps "locked" is perfectly fine/should just get a PC defense force', I don't give a damn

I just feel like a game published by the console manufacturer should run at native res. For the most part, the vast majority of MS Studios and SCE games ran at 720p on 360 and PS3 respectfully. All of the SCE published games on PS4 are 1080p. All of the Nintendo published games on Wii U are 720p (even a couple going above and beyond with 1080p). MS is the only one doing a bunch of games on their new console below native resolution, and it's disappointing. I feel like Nintendo, SCE, and MS should be setting benchmarks with their consoles, and native res is an important part of that.

That's not the real problem of this game, it looks a bit too slow and repetitive to me, from what i've seen so far at least

I was expecting more from a game made specifically for the console. Regardless though, the game looks good but I guess we will need to see the final product to really make a decision. I figured it would be either 1080p/30fps or 792/900p and 60fps. Damn.
