That's a Mario game alright.
Yup, that's my main problem with Mario these days. The games are brilliant, that's not even in question, but they could maybe do a different art-style? This looks like basic Mario. It's better than NSMB though, that looked bland as hell. Mario World looked like Mario but with an edge, Yoshi's Island looked like a storybook, but after that they started playing it too safe.

Looks great, although the scale seems limited due to the zoomed in view/camera perspective/limited gameplay areas (judging by what I saw)

Reminds me of Wario Land on gameboy actually.

Seems to look worse than Sunshine/Galaxy while have a significantly smaller scale. Still buying, of course.

the art style looks great, but the artifacting (i believe that's the word i'm looking for--the jagged edges, yikes) is kind of distracting.

I went and preordered this game and MK7 at GS yesterday and the guy at the counter apparently didn't even know these games existed. I'm pretty sure he's the manager too. I had to repeat the name of the game like 4 times. He even told me they must not have the game in the system 'cause he couldn't find it. Then he asked me why MK7 was called 7. I told him it was the 7th MK and he said "Already?". Then I told him the series started almost 20 years ago.

Why does Nintendo have to release games on a Sunday? I just want to order from Amazon and get them delivered to my door on the day they're released.

I think it's a tough comparison, as you say, due to the much smaller scale.

That's because the 3DS isn't a Wii.

I won't care when I'm playing it (or when I buy a 3DS, for that matter...) but man does it look pretty dated.

I won't say ugly, because Mario games always have some charm to them visually, but technically it's just bleurgh.

On the one hand, this looks like a great return to some classic Mario elements (SMB3, M64) that have been lost in recent games. Word to the Tanooki suit.

On the other hand, I'm disappointed by these graphics. What's the deal with 3DS anyway? Is it really "near Wii" as some people on this board say (and RE: Revelations backs up to some extent), or is it a little below PSP (as these screens suggest)?

The SMG are two of my favorite games of this generation.

But all the SML media shown so far just doesn't excite me one bit :\
Everything looks so "boxy" and the environments are lacking immersion...

No, but I was expecting visuals that would approach what was done on the cube/wii. There's very little geometry in these screenshots, and what is there still looks a tad blocky, in a poly-starved sense, not artistic one.

Of course, the developers haven't had as much time with the 3DS hardware, and I may be overestimating it's technical capabilities, so I probably have nothing to complain about.

I get excited whenever I see screenshots of this game, but the levels they've chosen to demo at press events give me the opposite feeling.
Its a lil weird.

I am not a fan of the timer. It seems one big "don't explore or wander around, hurry up and finish the level" kind of thing... and that is an element I do not like to have in a 3D Mario. Super Mario 64 with a timer would have not been as enjoyable as it could be.

Yeah, it's quite basic in geometry, but it works well while playing. I don't really think we'll see anything pushing the kind of geometry we saw on the Wii. Nothing on the 3DS does so far, and I'm not getting the impression the hardware can do it.

I don't understand the worries about the graphics, guys.
You don't remember how Galaxy looked in images: lots of jaggies everywhere... but then, poetry in motion.
3D Land will not be poetic as Galaxy, but graphically they're nearer than you think. Really.
For most of things they're equal, IMHO.

same. the gameplay videos i watched (people playing through entire levels, etc.) made each area seem really small/short. i was never a fan of SM64 but levels of that size would have been nice.

i'll give it a whirl though.

From memory you can collect clocks or something to extend your time.

Having seen 3D screenshots, I believe this game will be a real showcase for 3D.

And for the people worrying about the timer: I'm sure there are clocks you can collect to add more time.

How long has this been in development? How do we know it isn't being rushed out the door due to 3DS sales?

I'm getting a very SMB3 vibe from this game and that's a good thing.

Hopefully one day theres a sequel with Wario as the villain.

MH3G seems to come close.
