Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Wow, this game looks legitimately boring as fuck.

Why, Nintendo...

Because they needed a 3D Mario this holiday season. A Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy type Mario wouldn't have been done in time.

A good example of when panic Nintendo isn't best Nintendo.

They're not gonna ditch a series that sells 8M+, we still got NSMB2 after SM3DL and we also got NSMBU/NSLU. They can all coexist.

I bet the next two main Mario platformers will be both 3D like the Galaxy games for both the 3DS and Wii U.

Of course they aren't ditching that series. That's why they're making Super Mario 3D World, the successor to that series.

still looks awful,
the first time i've ever been able to say that about a new 3d mario game.
So boring.
My biggest problem is that we've already seen late in the game, world 6 and it looks
no less boring than this, actually i think looks almost the same in terms of difficulty.

I don't buy that excuse 3dland had with an extra set of harder levels,
as they weren't actually that much harder till the last world.

I'm praying that when nintendo labeled those levels from e3 (world 6).
that they were tricking us all and they are actually just the first one.

We need to see a lot more to judge it, but i have faith to EAD tokyo so im not realy worried.I hope in the next direct they will give us some more details.

ive seen people say it looks uninspired and by the books, but this is the 1st time i heard someone say it actually looks "awful" what was awful about it?

It is though

It's 3D. It's a platformer. Therefore...
He means that it's completely linear, like Mario side-scrollers. Start-point and end-point with few reasons to ever look back. Personally, I found this to be an actual evolution to the Mario formula -- I felt like playing a 2D Mario but without feeling NSMB's overused-ness. And of course I'm excited about 3D World.

I can see why people expected a 3D Mario though. We had 3D Land, NSMB2, NSMBU and NSLU and no 3D Mario between any of them. 3D World has every reason to happen, but being the fifth 2D Mario in a row, it could have had "Galaxy 3" (or Mario Universe, or whatever) before it.

His point is that it isn't a true 3D platformer.

It's a dumbass point. It's platforming in a 3D space. It's like saying the original Crash Bandicoot isn't a 3D platformer. It's pointless and blithering because we didn't get another "wide open" platformer like Mario Galaxy. You know the one? Where you set off on an incredibly pre-set path through a linear level? Not really 3D is it. More 2D.

Mario Galaxy is a 2D platformer guys.

I agree. People seem to overreact. I can't deny that I'd love to see some more challenging levels. But they will be there, no doubt.

And those arguments that the game is just a sidescroller... Hilarious.

Probably the game I most excited about this year. The co-operative multiplayer side of it looks fantastic, especially since the extra space 3D brings means less instances of accidentally killing the other player.

The fact I thought Super Mario 3D Land was absolutely fantastic helped get me pretty excited for this one.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 were linear also, though. Does that mean they are not true 3D platformers?

My main "issue" with the game (and I love the look of it, I'm gonna play the hell out of this one) is mostly that the levels feel constructed instead of organic. Also, it doesn't feel like there's anything at stake. It feels like Mario captured a bunch of Goombas on his adventures and set them loose in these levels that he constructed himself. Like a gauntlet to keep him occupied for when his next big adventure comes along.

That's not to say this doesn't look great, but it feels like a collection of levels instead of a sprawling adventure.

People just expect 3D Mario to push the envelope. I do too and I'll be very sad if that game never comes, but for now this'll do just nicely.

90% of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 was linear. And they were two of the best games ever. Calm down guys.
Indeed. And they were easy as well.

3D World doesn't have the gravitational twist making it seem a lot more ordinary. It will probably compensate in other ways.

Yea from what we saw its not a groundbreaking 3d mario of course multiplayer its something that never happened before but many (including me) they dont really care about this feature. But they should relax ead tokyo gave us some masterpieces why not again.

Pff sidescroller... it has full camera control after many years, i dont know how important in the game this would be but its there and its a proper 3d mario not an uprgraded 3ds game or a new nsmb.

Not aiming at you in particular, but since many raise the Panic Flag on this project I'll use your post as an example and ask everyone: How long do you think they've been working on this project? That Iwata stormed into the "real" 3D Mario team's offices last December and screamed at them to throw a lazy cash grab project together in less than a year, ignoring any work they'd put into another game already?

I could buy this theory if it was aimed more towards Nintendo having had a two-year plan or so of games that could drive momentum in the console's short term life, with 3D World having been chosen instead of SMU or whatever back then for these reasons. But not this OMG they're just pushing crap out of the door in panic crap that's been popping up. It seems massively disrespectful to a team who seem to be pushing out a polished, if not very imaginative, game that will likely be full of new content.

Sorry for using your post for this, Coolwhip - it's not at all crapping on the production in the sense that I'm targeting here.

With actual skill involved in platforming, I guess. Skill that was mostly taken out from Galaxy due to the gravity gimmick already messing things up.

True.

But after MG1 and 2, i want a 3d mario that goes back to the exploration times of Mario64.

(But not too much like Mario Sunshine - i dont really know if THAT is the problem with mario sunshine, but there is a problem.)

- BUT since its the first time we have a multiplayer 3d mario, i will buy this game - unfortunally - on day1. I just hope nintendo makes some kind of promotion or discount.

They were more linear than Mario 64 and Sunshine (especially SMG2), but in a very different way than 2D Mario. For example, the same location often accommodated multiple stages, in spite of each stage being relatively linear. There was some continuity or interface between stages of the same world.

I also didn't say 3DL/3DW aren't 3D platformers per se -- that would be ridiculous. No one can doubt however that they are a 3D-fied version of traditionally 2D Mario games rather than traditional 3D Mario games, and that's what so many people argue about. Perhaps it's time to refer to each series as Flag and Star series to be clear, but people are trying to make a point by calling 3DX games "2D".

It's not about good or bad, it's just that we haven't had a "Star Mario" since 2010. For what it's worth, I personally enjoyed 3D Land even more than Galaxy and I see the potential of the former, but I think it would be wiser to give it some time before bringing in another entry.

what's awful about it, is that i know they are capable of so much better than this.
i realise they need games quick,
and what way better to shift a few more consoles than dumbing it down and adding multiplayer.
It's the correct decision in terms of making money, but i'm sick of this.
it does look awful, did you not play the mario galaxy games, this one looks dull, uninspired, boring, and looks like they have put no creative effort in to it.

I can't believe i'm about to write this but...........
compare this to sonic lost world, which looks creative, fun, challenging and inspired.
it might end up controlling like rubbish but when i see that game it looks like the development team is trying.
this however looks like a sloppy effort at best.
and coming from two of the most creatively inspired games ever made it's a joke.

Hey guys remember when everyone hated new super mario 3D land, NSMBU and NSMB2 on launch? Months later, I see put very high in personal lists as far as mario games go.

The negativity in this thread is unwarranted for. We all know they are going to make a new flashy mario game down the line anyway.

Although this game excites me on some levels: 4 player multiplayer with individual charistics a la Bros 2 and camera control, there are still some concerns.

8 way control, I really don't like the sound of this. I guess this is more of a problem with the wiimote option control but I can't see how they couldn't make it so that if a analog stick is detected in use, the could implement 360 degree control.

NSMBU was pretty bad, though. Seeing videos, my hopes are really low, but I'll probably try it.

I don't hate them but I still find 3D Land and NSMB2/U to be the most boring Mario platformers Nintendo's ever made, and I've played them all multiple times.

My biggest problem with this game is that it looks so... boring. It feels like Nintendo's attempt to replace the 2D Mario games and it looks more like a playground than anything challenging.

I remember when NSMBWii first had videos of people trying it out, and they were placed in that world 6 area, which was a decently difficult level in its own right. the world 6 level shown in the gamersyde video is just too easy by comparison. Like that Battlerock something level in Galaxy, except that was a very, very early galaxy you visited.

Meh.. People said Sunshine looked like shit. Was awful. Ridiculous follow up to Mario 64. And I loved that game. Had a ton of fun with it.

This looks like it will have plenty of entertainment, and looks like multi-player will be less frustrating that NSMBU which is a good thing. As long as its fun I don't really care what public (or even popular) opinion is.

Excited for this on xmas day, 4 player co-op looks like a lot of fun. I just hope this is the last we see of Mario 3D Land. 5 NSMB games and they all look the same, too much.
