Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I can only talk about the stuff i have seen so far, if the rest is much better fine, but i somehow doubt it because it doesn´t really make sense to publicly show the most unimpressive part of your games.

They do that with every game though. They show mostly the intro stages and some of the latter stuff.

I mean look what they showed when showing off 3D Land, and to be honest, I was not looking forward to that game at all. It turned out to be all kinds of amazing. I have learned to never doubt EAD after that.

Being disappointed with this game doesn't mean you want Galaxy 3. It can mean you expected Nintendo to go all out with 3D Mario, to do something new with a new console like every other generation.

Mario 64 - Defined what a 3D platformer is. Emphasis on open world and exploration.
Sunshine - FLUDD mechanic.
Galaxies - Space setting,
3D World - New suit and see through pipes?

I'm going to really enjoy this game, BUT it's not the amazing 3D Mario game that I feel the Wii U needed. It does look just like just a HD sequel to 3D Land, rather than something brand new and innovative.

I guess some people could argue co-op is the big innovation this time, but I don't feel that way. It's nice to have and I'll be taking advantage of it, but an extra player isn't enough to make up for the disappointment of this feeling a bit samey.

Of course, when I play the game maybe it will become apparent to me this isn't just a 3D Land sequel with a co-op partner, but nothing they've shown so far leads me to believe that is the case.

I really hope it is, though.

I'm mostly just amazed that anyone sees this game as a surprise or some kind of repeat, when it's clear that this is exactly where the next stage of Mario platforming has been headed. If you think this is a lazy offshoot rather than Miyamoto & Company's vision of the perfect unity of 3D, 2D, and social Mario, you haven't been paying attention for a while. The sequence from Galaxy 2 to 3D Land -- mixed with 4-player co-op which was so important for the NSMB series -- leads you directly to this game. There's really nowhere else you should have expected them to go.

Ahah, and now people claim they don't want a new Galaxy gmae but a game with the creativity of Galaxy despite the game playing way worse (and Galaxy 2 really wasn't that creative, but hey some have a boner for theweirdest things)

It's the company that showed reverse bullshot to promote the latest Pikmin....

Mario demos are almost always the first (most boring) levels. Dam near everytime.

All people want is to cut the hyperbolic reactions and generalizations of the fanbase to a minimum.

We don't want Galaxy 3. We want a game with new ideas, like Galaxy.

And like Galaxy,.we want a game that Nintendo appears to give a shit about. Instead of throwing a generic artstyle with generic music and calling it a day.

Pretty much. Galaxy just wowed people when it was shown first. Just like Mario 64 or other great Nintendo classics. 3D world just looks like more of the same.

I find it funny that the same people who gripe about Nintendo's approach to sequels turn around and eat up the next Call of Duty, Halo, Assassins Creed, Zombie game 47, Forza, Gran Turismo, etc. etc.

The irony is amusing.

Oh yeah, a THIRD Galaxy!!!!!

Not a second Mario 3D Land game.

We wouldn't want rehashes.

We want a 4th Metroid Prime!!!!

Not a second fucking Donkey Kong.

We're tired of the same old same old.

I for one am glad they held back from making a game like Metroid Prime 4 which caters to a western audience and could fill a hole in their game library and instead chose a colorful 2D platformer which the Wii U has plenty of. This is very intelligent. Wii U sales will explode after its release.

Seriously???

Ummmmm, breaking news but many games don't show the best and crazier levels until much later after they are revealed.

Might as well show the last level already, that'd be a great idea.

Wrong.

Doesn´t matter what Nintendo does you guys are happy anyways.

As far as game development goes they are one of the few companies that rarely disappoints me. I have fun playing their games and I can tell you right now without having played a single minute of this game that this will be another fun title just like 3D Land was.

You're ignoring the blatant hypocrisy still.

It's not trolling. It's a legit critique of the series.

It's reaaaaally lazy.

This is the core of fan wars.

Fans A: "You ungrateful people just hate everything."

Fans B: "You simpering suck-ups take whatever crap they give you."

In Nintendo threads especially, no just on GAF but everywhere. Do some Nintendo fans act overly defensive when a game is disliked? Sure. But just as many people accuse those who actually like a game they don't of being blind fools.

It seems Nintendo crap highlights it because there's a bunch of fans who an get really self-righteous about what they think are correct Nintendo games, correct Nintendo behavior, etc. This happens with any company's fans but Nintendo really seems to bring it out.

3D world has you moving in perpendicular angles. Left right left right, okay now front to back. With 8 way digital controls and a camera that has no need to be panned around.

3D platformer my ass guys.

Super Mario World U is too different and further it's not different enough! I want more of the same in a totally different new way! Go crazy, Nintendo, be creative. Just don't make it like Mario 64!

Yeah, why make a sequel to a game that outsold all of these important genre filling epics combined???

I agree with you, how stupid can they be???

Don´t know, i remember a time when Nintendo was showing really mindblowing stuff on their conferences. People went nuts when they first presented Mario Galaxy for example.

3D platformer my ass guys.

I don't recall having to move the camera at all in Galaxy and Galaxy2.
Also that hexagonal thing on the nunchunk made it so most of the time you where moving in 8 directions. Without it, they have to program it in the game I guess.

People went nuts when they revealed Megaman for Smash, people went nuts when they revealed the Zelda HD tech demo, you just choose not to hear it because you selectively rewrite the past to fit your own tired opinion.

Some of us played it, the scepticism is unwarranted here.

They took one of the rare IP that was something a little bit different and made into one of the most generic trash this side of the industry and you're basically 'YES! MOAR" and we have 1 IP here that retain the little bit of uniqueness while providing the best gameplay around and you're not high enough to shit on it.
Excuse me if I find that funny.

LOL. I believe you mean they took the IP they had been rehashing with SotN clones for over 10 years and actually made it into something different for the franchise.

Now, when it comes to Mario, I have vastly different expectations for a mainline 3D title. Mechanics/game design cribbed from a 3DS title that have to conform to NSMB-like multiplayer are not in line with those expectations.

Looks wonderful. My 11-year old and I played the demos at E3 time and we were giddy then. And nice camera, Blim!! What are you using?

Yeah damn! What they need is tons and tons of side scrollers, that'll crank up the sales. DKR sold what, 6 million units on a console with 100 million sales? Wonder what it'll sell on the Wii U. Can someone remind me how much Wii U has sold so far worldwide?

They missed an opportunity to create a game that'll give them cred, some buz. Metroid Prime is a fucking legend. DKR is nice and all, no one will hardly remember it in ten years.

I hate to say it, in addition to NSMBU, 3D World U is the second major Mario platformer I'll be skipping.

I also cant help but think that a major single player Mario game like Galaxy or 64 is somewhere down the road and that fans shouldn't expect this game to be Nintendo's replacement..

Fucking Donkey Kong makes me sad. Why Retro why!?

Well, i´m not saying 3D World isn´t going to be a good game or something because it´s going to be. Just comparing the Nintendo of now to that of the past and this doesn´t end favorable for todays Nintendo.
And the thing that really pisses me of the most is that they really have the potential to show us some mindblowing stuff but they just don´t. It´s all about playing it save, don´t invest in projects and studios and trying to milk some of their franchises.

Metroid Prime - 1.5 million
Metroid Prime 2 - 900,000
Metroid Prime 3 - 1.2 million

Well, I almost never pay more than $15-$20 for games anymore unless I see actual effort, scope, ambition and vision behind them.

So yeah.

Well that's just smart shopping really and has nothing to do with Nintendo.

When most games can be bought for much cheaper within weeks of release, buying it full price is just silly.

Nintendo's games are the only ones I generally pay full price because their games very rarely drop in price very soon after release.

Good god man you're so full of bullshit. This simply is not true.

No I mean it, not a single person. No one. If you bring up the game to an enthusiast they'll have no idea what you're talking about. But that wouldn't happen because that would require you to remember the game. lol ;)

Metroid Prime - 1.5 million
Metroid Prime 2 - 900,000
Metroid Prime 3 - 1.2 million

The first two are pretty impressive for the sales of the gamecube. The third one was a launch title no? The Wii was the type of machine to showcase such a game. It was a casual machine. The Wii U finally has the power to show off a mature title which Nintendo sorely lacks. Oh, no but Donkey Kong was the safe bet, good choice Nintendo.

I got to play the game last Saturday at Festigame, and it's great. Level design is solid as expected from a Mario game, and the 4-player co-op adds a lot of fun to the gameplay. Cat suit is fun too.

Not the most innovative Mario title, but I can take that as long as the gameplay and level design is good. It's not that I expect every title in a series to be this absolute game changer.

Someone mentioned earlier that there was a stage with peach's castle in galaxy and i sure as hell do not remember this. Guessing they meant the prologue with the party.

People went nuts when they revealed Megaman for Smash, people went nuts when they revealed the Zelda HD tech demo, you just choose not to hear it because you selectively rewrite the past to fit your own tired opinion.

You´re confusing a few die hard Nintendo fans with gamers in general. Lack of interest in the WiiU clearly shows that barely anybody goes nuts about this stuff.

Yeah, man, this rehash company should have done a 4th in the Prime saga, 3 weren't enough.

You might be anti-2D platformers but you sure as hell don't speak for others.

Some find them near and dear because they offer gameplay that can't be done with other perspectives and some....GASP.....actually liked Donkey Kong Country Returns more than the Prime games.

People still remember Super Mario World to this day yet of course you foresee the future and generalize about peoples' remembrance of a game that isn't even out.

So where did you see all the buzz for Mario Galaxy then, on the daily news? It doesn't show it clearly at all, show me some facts, show me some numbers, show me something other than "Remember the uproar around Mario Galaxy?!?"

Metroid Prime - 1.5 million
Metroid Prime 2 - 900,000
Metroid Prime 3 - 1.2 million

The first two were not half bad for a console that only sold 22 million units overall.
Metroid Prime 3 though shows that you need to cultivate a certain kind of audience for these games and that didn´t happen on the Wii.

Mario Galaxy - 11 million
Mario Galaxy 2 - 8 million
DKCR - 6 million
NSMB Wii - 27 million
NSMB U - 60% attach rate

Gaming forums, gaming magazines etc.
Oh and it sold pretty well of course.

Keep on making excuses and writing fiction. It's quite funny.

Oh and it sold pretty well of course.

I haven't read a negative preview of 3D World so far. And as for the second part, even you with your ability to see in the future can't tell how well 3D World will sell. I'm sure you'll guess as if you know for sure though.

Just another 2D Mario platformer, what a joke!

I already had my fill of 2D platformers after playing Pikmin 3. Can't they make a nice racing game like Call of Duty or maybe a neat puzzle game like Gran Turismo.

/sarcasm (I can't believe I actually needed to say that).

Yeah, why make a sequel to a game that outsold all of these important genre filling epics combined???

I agree with you, how stupid can they be???

I could understand reactions like those before the Wii U's launch, even though I always disagreed with them, but now...? We have numbers. The launch led by NSMBU has been the most disastrous one in Nintendo's history. Even the GameCube performed better.

Considering that, I don't see how betting on the NSMBU formula again is a sure thing at all. Of course, all of these games we're getting this year were probably in production before the disaster that was the Wii U's launch, so they were likely planned under the expectations that the launch would be a success. It's still a completely wrong direction though, and I really don't think we'll see any significant change of the Wii U's fate this holiday. It likely will get a boost, of course, but it won't be nearly big enough to change the Wii U's fortunes.

I really don't think so. There's no remaining team to make such a game. This is the direction that Nintendo wanted to take the Mario franchise in - boringly safe and plastic, believing that it was part of the selling point and appeal of the NSMB series.

Of course, after this sales disaster, we'll likely see some other approach in the future.

Not the most innovative Mario title, but I can take that as long as the gameplay and level design is good. It's not that I expect every title in a series to be this absolute game changer.

It's hilarious that some called Mario Galaxy 2 an "expansion pack" yet it's one of the highest rated and loved games of all time.

Yeah, man, this rehash company should have done a 4th in the Prime saga, 3 weren't enough.

4 what? Prime saga games? What is that exactly? FPS adventure game you say? How many of those does Nintendo have? How many 2D platformers has Nintendo released since making videogames?

You might be anti-2D platformers but you sure as hell don't speak for others.

Tell me your opinions.

A. How many 2D titles do you want on the system?
B. How well do you think Donkey Kong is going to sell on the system? Throw me a figure

Some find them near and dear because they offer gameplay that can't be done with other perspectives and some....GASP.....actually liked Donkey Kong Country Returns more than the Prime games.

Perhaps they can't be done in other perspectives, but they are simpler titles by nature and are ideal for handhelds. This is why you see so many on them, and on mobile. Its a waste of resources for the Wii U that already has NSMB U. It was a bone-headed decision.

People still remember Super Mario World to this day yet of course you foresee the future and generalize about peoples' remembrance of a game that isn't even out.

Yeah, that was the SNES. Gameplay evolved since then. I mean, its nice to have a 2D platformer here and there, but in place of a true 3D epic title like a Prime or some adventure game like Ravenblade resurrected?

Madness. An absolutely stupid decision. Oh well, we'll have X.

Top Bottom
