Super Mario 3D World: New Trailer

I liked this game from E3 but this looks even better than before. It's just so pretty and fun-looking. It's like the ultimate christmas gift, a box full of colorful toys to play with. Also, Nintendo's Pixar-esque approach to visuals is the best route they could have taken. Only top notch companies can compete with that, which helps set Nintendo games apart from all the indie or mid-tier company games.

I'm pretty sure they don't have intentions of killing those off.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'd like to see an open world Mario game again but I feel like they know they can get a broader audience with a 3D game that resembles a 2D one aka a linear game such as the Galaxy duo and 3D Land.

From a marketing point of view, it makes more sense to make a game "go from here to there" rather than a "you're here, do whatever you want and get lost". one

Really only two years? I thought flagship games like this, especially in HD, usually took closer to 3? Isn't it possible during the last 6 months of developing 3D Land that 3D world was into the planning stage?

Just asking because I'm curious. 2 years seems like a fast dev cycle, especially looking at how long Retro is taking on DK and the last guardian....uhh....I won't go there.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were in crunch time to get the game ready. Actually, I always thought it wasn't even planned as a 2013 title but since the Wii U was bombing everywhere they had no choice.

I respect EAD so much because even when they had so little time, they managed the game to look amazing from head to toes and the controls look tigh, just like any other 3D Mario game. It doesn't look rushed at all.

That let's you know how well organized they are. Good stuff.

I dunno. The only two games they made that were in that style were 64 and Sunshine and I feel that the linear approach is far far better. 64 and Sunshine were at their best when the goals were platforming-based. 64 had smaller levels and a lot of the goals were just stuff like find the star in a certain part of the level and find the star in another part of the level and you had to platform to get there. Sunshine went overboard with the adventure elements a lot of the goals were repetitive, tedious, and lacking in challenge; like they'd waste 1 mission on cleaning up goop in under 3 minutes. Like a quarter of Sunshine's missions were dedicated to linear platforming without the FLUDD and those were the moments when they game shine got. I think they can deliver better experiences when they focus on each mission as a stage rather than stapling 3 stages together and trying to get 7 stages of content out of them. They can still have adventure elements and levels, they just shouldn't make up the majority of the games.

This type of game also seems like more work. With the adventure style you make fewer stages and fill them with missions. With this kind of game you have to make a level for every mission.

The first Galaxy remains my favorite internally developed Nintendo game of all times. That said, I actually WANT 3D World now, where as I didn't care about it at E3. So I've changed my mind about not getting a Wii U until 2014, I'll take one on Nov 22.

At the end you're agreeing with me. Linear games are way better than open world games :P

This looks fucking great.

I'm agreeing that the linear games are better, my point was I think the adventure focus style games would be a waste of a game since the best parts of those games are the linear platforming segments.

I'm sure it's been said before, but the jazzy music and Bowser's Cadillac screams for a Wario appearance in this game.

The music in these stages is amazing, but that boss battle with Bowser seemed kinda lame in a way, It'd be cooler (and more fitting with the music) if the Bowser-mobile was going faster.

Its speed seems to depend on the player. It was going very slow and Bowser was stuck in his fireball shooting phase because the player was just standing at the bottom of the screen forcing the car to almost stop.

They've done it again, they've actually done it again.

Mario and GTA are god tier IP, no other dev studio can come remotely close, they are perfection, all criticism is forced.

It looks great, nice presentation, and tight platforming. I love how 3D Land feels and plays, this is going to be really fun.

Looks very good. I don't like the cat versions at all, but the rest looks fun. I'm sure it will be a great game, unfortunately I'll have to pass on it due to Wii U.

Well...heck, looks like i'm gonna have to buy that WiiU afterall...

Just fantastic...

So I have SM3D land, Zelda WW:HD, Smash next year, any other must-haves for WiiU?

Wonderful 101 is the best game I've played in a long time, and I haven't even finished yet. Also Pikmin 3 is quite good.

Mario 3D World on 3DS is one of my favorite Mario games. I never doubted for one second this game would be anything less than fantastic.

See now this particular video shows whats dissapointing bout this game. Petey Pirahna there should have been an epic boss moment, and then that makes me think that this whole level should have been more open world and more of a home for Peter Pirahna there. And there that reminds me how simplistic and unambitious all the levels in this game will be.

...that's just a big piranha plant.

tks for the recommendations fellas....

Wonderful 101 and Pikmin are kinda the same right? I know W101 is a lot more action packed, but they are both strategy style titles? Don't think I need both of them.

W101 is not a strategy game at all. It's a full blown action game through and through. It has more in common with Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta than it does Pikmin.

I'll admit being a little underwhelmed with the initial reveal...but this trailer shows that EAD packed a TON of creativity into each level. It looks brilliant. Can't wait to download it on day one.

lol don't ever make that mistake again. One is a strategy game, the other is a hardcore action game from top to bottom. Not even remotely similar.

They're absolutely nothing alike. Just look them up on youtube.

Looks boring, i'm sorry.

What's up with the apology? I'm sure someone out there finds something you're interested in boring too. It happens.

I can see why you would think that first glance. But they really are totally different.

If you can only get one, I'd recommend Pikmin a little more, but they're both great.

The games have nothing to do with each other except for the fact that you have multiple small characters under your command.

So we've had NSMB1, 2, Wii and U, and Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World.

What's next fascinates me. Presumably it will be for 2DS/3DS, and may not rely on 3D depth/visuals as much... so maybe it will be another 2D reboot, to try and catch the "NSMB" lightning in a bottle once more (without losing sales due to the feeling of a rehash).

And on that note, maybe Mario will go on another long-term 4 year hiatus like between Sunshine and NSMB: which would be the perfect time to focus resources on neglected properties like F-Zero, Star Fox, Metroid, Golden Sun, Star Tropics, Kid Icarus, and 3D Donkey Kong, and of course brand new IPs and concepts.
