Super Mario 3D World: New Trailer

Some levels have multiple poles.

You can also look at it this way:
In SM64 you played the same level multiple times to get different stars.
In 3D Land/World, you have a bunch of different levels that you play to get one objective.

Even though it sort of looked like that in the trailer, i don't think that's the case. I think that was kind of a hub, and each of those flagpoles were individual levels you could select. Unless you are talking about levels that have secret flagpoles, then sure but there's still quite a difference.

My point was addressing whether flagpoles or stars are better. Honestly it's mostly arbitrary (it basically just signals you completed the level or objective), but in the context of the Super Mario series flagpoles have been used to represent the end of the level, while stars have represented you completing that particular objective, in which 6-8 are contained within a single sandbox. What you deem is better is more personal preference, but just thought I should point it out

All the best crow eating from the thread.

Note that this isn't a wall of shame. It's a WALL OF REDEMPTION!

Initial disappointment is entirely gone. This looks goddamn amazing.

Good god, my opinion of this game just did a 180. It's now a day one. This is like, Galaxy-level of level design here.

This is how I felt while watching it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_8Qi-P2jQg

Sorry for doubting.

Yeah, I wasnt sure how I felt when it first was revealed. It just looked like another 3D land, but the trailer blew me away. There is so much going on and for the first time in a long while, I'm excited for a mario game.

Absolutely incredible.
I shouldn't have doubted.

My opinions completely changed with this trailer. It looked fantastic and above the just-like-3D-Land feel we saw previously.

Man I thought this looked like crap at E3

Looks like I was wrong. Might have to pick this up.

I will take a piece [of crow] please.

I will admit, I was skeptical when they first revealed it at E3. I'm simply blown away and the references to Mario Bros. 2 are amazing.

This looks like a system seller to me.

All my disappointment gone. It looks incredible. Now I want a Wii U.

I totally doubted this game I think it deserved the doubts from what they showed before

but this is the Mario I wanted in HD

Umm. Okay. I hated the announcement but that game looks incredible. I shouldn't have doubted after 3DLand, which is pretty much the best Mario since SMW.

I need this yesterday.

I got to eat some crow tonight I guess.

Never will doubt based EAD ever again.

Fuck I should have preordered this during e3 fs deal, I feel like an idiot now

DAMN that was an amazing trailer! I initially wrote the game off but if it looks this good then I have no doubts.

Not enough crow in the world to fill me up.

Going from the bottom of my list straight to the no 1 of my most hyped games...how is this even possible.

Thanks for the crow nintendo...tastes amazing!

I was on the fence about buying the game before seeing this..

Not anymore. Day one.

I will gladly eat crow for doubting EAD tokyo.

I'll eat crow.
No shame in that shit.
I thought this game seemed a bit bland, even though 3D Land is my favorite Mario game.

Damn, I was wrong as FUCK.
This game is gorgeous. I'm thinking of picking up a WiiU for it this holiday season instead of in March.

God, I'm excited.

Why did I doubt this game?

Wow. I was pretty skeptical of this game when it was first shown, definitely in the Mario 3D Land upgrade? camp but this is looking really, really good.

Now I feel bad for having doubt on EAD, this game is just mind blowing.

I'll admit, I wasn't very interested in this game after I saw it at E3. NOW, man, this game looks amazing! I want this game all of a sudden! It looks really fun!

Yes, I'll eat crow myself. I had way too much doubt, even after player the e3 demo.

It looks great. Lots of variety. Fantastic graphics. Day 1.

Every ounce of skepticism I felt is gone. Goddamn. Waiting 6 months to buy a wiiu just got way way harder. I'll buy 3d land to hold me over.

I am one. :embarrassed:

I deserve to eat soooo much crow. After the first trailer at e3 I derided and jeered this game until my throat was hoarse. I was so wrong so very wrong.

Game looks amazing.

Okay I am no longer skeptical. Meow.

Can't believe how much this trailer changed my mind. Looks incredible.

oh wow, I'm sorry I doubted you, EAD Tokyo.

EAD Tokyo. EAD GOD TOKYO.

Koizumi also has another director and team working on another project. Bring me more!!

*starts eating crow* :(

looks fucking amazing tbh

Oh my godddd Nintendoooooo... Sorry for doubting you. I need this now.

Holy crap this trailer.

Opinion reversed, hype levels rising. Art direction is unreal and the water reminds me of Super Mario Sunshine!!

I can admit when I was wrong.

I was wrong about 3D World. I always thought the game looked good, but I was convinced it wasn't the Mario game that the WiiU needed right now.

I was wrong.

It looks fantastic, and will be a day one purchase for me.

I do wish this trailer would have been shown at E3, though. I think it would have made people feel a lot better about the game.

I absolutely hated this game at E3, but my god this game pulled a 180 bigger than anything the Xbox One has. This game looks amazing now!

i wasn't going to buy this and, after that trailer, now I am.

Good job Nintendo

Just watched the trailer. My interest went from, 'Looks okay I guess' to 'HOOLLLLY SHIT'.

Most anticipated next gen game for sure now!

Both collectibles and exits have advantages. I'm not clearly in favour of either one. Collectibles establish a bit more variety in terms of objective. You don't always just have to go to a specific location, but sometimes you need to fulfill other types of requirements. That's the advantage of Stars.

But with exits, it creates the opportunity for secret exits. This is good in its own way, and isn't really possible when you simply have a counter of stars to keep track of, which gradually let you progress through the game.

Now, to be fair, it IS possible to do both with either format. It just becomes a little more arbitrary at that point. Like fulfilling an objective to open a door to lead to an exit, for example.

Very good points

Startin to bum myself out thinkin about this game. That Bowser fight is so slow, and you're just kicking bombs at him. Vs the amazing run-n-jump Bowser fights in 3D Land. And the dinosaur surfing level, ehhhh.

3D Land was as great as it was due to a total focus on platforming levels. It's the dark spot on the Galaxies, the stupid levels that had nothing to do with platforming, breaking up the experience with generally unfun little mico-games. When NSMB came around, it reminded me of how great an all-platforming Mario game can be, and 3D Land furthered that focus. Now with 3D World they appear to be slipping back into Galaxy tropes. A shame. :\

I really appreciate that list there. More than just eating crow, it's awesome to see a positive change of heart and renewed love for the ole plumber-boy. Mario/EAD still got that magic!

The actual footage of that fight did bum me out, but for now Im going to assume its the first instance of it (every 3D Mario game sans Sunshine repeat their Bowser fight for the whole game) so its going to be slower and more simplistic than later encounters. I can easily imagine multiple instances of this fight where Bowser drives faster and there might be holes in the highway Mario needs to be aware of.

The path to Bowser in 3D Land 1-Castle is dreadfully simplistic (no pits, a dry bones not even in your way, Bowser will have probably only fired one round of fireballs by the time you get to him) compared to its instance in world 8 (tiny platforms so jumping is risky, most platforms rotate to push you into lava, the path is longer and Bowser fires off a round of fireballs at a quicker pace)

Now I could be way off, and its just a one time thing or later variations on the fight are just as slow but Im willing to give EAD Tokyo the benefit of the doubt on this one

It's the first boss fight, iirc. Hopefully the difficulty will increase further into the game.

EDIT: Just realised you weren't talking specifically about difficulty.

Just a thought: Do you think 3D World will have a special world just like 3D Land?

Forgive me for not reading the entire thread, but if Luigi can flutterjump, what's Peach's strength supposed to be?

Luigi OP.

EDIT: Also add me to the list of people excited for this game.

I had little interest in this game, and was actually debating on whether I was going to pick up Sonic or this, but the new trailer definitely changed my opinion. I'm still a little disappointed with the direction for a console Mario game, but I no longer have any worries about it feeling like a rehash.

Prolonged jumps. Good for beginners.

I guess I was thinking back to the Super Mario Advance days, when Peach was the floater and Luigi was high jumps with a tiny bit of floatiness. It just seems like Luigi is encroaching on Peach's niche without giving anything up.

I think the Bowser boss fight speeds up if you move forward with him...but it really doesn't have the same dynamic of say, NSMB Wii final boss where you HAD to keep moving and dodging because he's right behind you. There's really not much incentive to make it go faster. Just chill and hit back his slow little projectiles *shrugs*

Course that's a final boss compared to a world 1 boss, so who knows. Let's not see sit here and pretend the first 3D Land boss was Murai from Ninja Gaiden or some shit. There was hardly any obstacles, and its even easier if you had the win button(the Tanooki suit).

Peach also doesn't have slippery controls like Luigi does.

Damn, might actually get a Wii U sooner than I intended...game looks good. Really good. Glad to be totally wrong on my earlier impressions of this title.

It still looks like 3D land HD, which is perfectly fine with me considering 3D Land had better levels than the galaxy games.

3D Land level design was forgettable: I'll never forget Slimy Spring, Gusty Garden, and the like.
The SMG games should by nature have better levels as you are playing through the levels more than once. You did that in 3DL, but as rehashed levels that played almost exactly the same as opposed to changing the objective (to be fair, SMG did have the comet missions that were a lot like the challenging versions of the 3D land levels).

Super Mario 3D World |OT| Super Mario Galaxy 3
i kid

Super Mario 3D World |OT| Your Princess is Right Here

Wait the fuck up.

They're releasing 3D World and Zelda: Link Between Worlds ON THE SAME DAY? Friday, November 22nd?

Ya it makes no sense, but I'm buying both and playing them for thanksgiving.

Some of my best thanksgivings have been with zelda. Ocarina of time came out right before Thanksgiving and iirc majoras mask came out in October but I got it in November too.

Right. Power stars, shines, flagpoles; they're all arbitrary. Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy all had stars/shines that were no different from flagpoles in how they were used. All of the NSMB games, 3D Land, and 3D World have flagpoles that you need to do more adventurous things to reach; in NSMB and 3D Land this is almost exclusively in the ghost houses. 3D World blurred the lines a bit with its use of star coins. They weren't entirely optional; you need them in order to unlock the next levels. 3D World will probably continue that trend with its green stars. 3D World also has more level types like surfing on a dinosaur and catching bunnies for green stars. In Mario 64 or Sunshine there would be a mission like "Catch the bunnies!" and that would take up a whole mission while here it's part of a linear level. It's like being able to do multiple missions at once in the same level.

Woah, Mario can do roll attacks?! I wonder if the characters are gonna have a nice moveset like something close to 64/Sunshine. (Belly hopping is the best damn thing from Sunshine)
