Super Mario RPG (aka greatest RPG of all time) is 20 years old

Mario RPG was in no way my first RPG (that would be phantasy star), so we can cut out that "first kiss" nonsense.

I've always considered Geno to be the Boba Fett of Mario. I can't think of anything notable about him except for how cool he looks

Yes. Pressing a button at the right time when an attack comes at you can give you a chance to block and take less damage. Also your attacks have you timing inputs, rapidly tapping buttons for maximum damage, etc. They're not as deep as something like Mario & Luigi, so take it like the very earliest form.

EDIT: Also, if you're really good with the ultra jump and timing inputs, you can go infinitely or just enough to kill a boss in one turn. That takes some crazy skill though.

Sounds awesome. That's the one aspect I was hoping was true back in this game because I'd really like to play it--and have it on Wii VC in Wii Mode on Wii U in fact, but haven't played it yet. I just don't generally have patience for JRPGs so I'm glad there's a similar mechanic to the timed actions that keep me interested in the modern Mario RPGs.

I still haven't played this game despite having played Paper Mario and Thousand Year Door multiple times. I am hoping it comes out on the n3DS now that SNES support is available.

I finished the game a few weeks ago for the very first time. Great game, though I disagree that it's the best Mario RPG. Very happy that after all these years the game found its way towards Europe regardless.

I´ve been very critical of nintendo ever since they dropped the wii 2 years before the launch of Wii U, but its games like these that remind me the magic nintendo can bring.

I love this game so much, I finished it like 3 times already. A true sequel to it would be the one thing that would bring nintendo back in my radar,

Of course I can say that I played better RPG.

Of course there are better games on the SNES.

Of course I can say that future Mario RPG exploded better the idea.

But this game... this game... all the charm of Mario universe with the experience of Squaresoft.

One of the reasons I like this game is the humor. It was like a parody of other RPG's and games.

And the graphics were a hit on his time.

And the music!!!!

The minigames are fun and not tedious.

My favorite weapon was Bowser's, when he throw Mario against the enemies.

And the monster town is fantastic.

Maybe the only flaw in this game was the endgame. A final boss that only appears there, and a final scene too twisted for my taste (but the part with the numbered doors was fantastic)

All in all, one of the best games of all time.

I've tried to play this several times, and it just never clicked for me. None of the ones they've made since then have either.

I think a big part of it is my total lack of attachment to Mario as a franchise.

This was one of my first RPG's, and between the god tier music by Yoko Shimamura, the graphics (for SNES) and the writing and gameplay, the game is in a league of its own.

Luigi's wish on Star Hill will always make me tear up.

I don't want to throw shade because I like the game, but greatest RPG of all time? 🤔🤔🤔 If it's in the top five of the SNES it's number five.

Thats would also be where it is on the Mario RPG list.

20 years since Nintendo stomped on my 13 year old heart and cancelled the UK release of this game TT_TT

Thank ye, Virtual Console.

Being European I never played this game when it was released, so I can't imagine how it was like playing it at that time. Since then I've tried playing through it three times, but I still have never finished this game.

I get bored at some point and just don't care anymore, which is weird 'cause I was actually liking the game. Maybe it's because I had played Paper Mario & Mario&Luigi games by then and it was pretty archaic in comparison? I dunno. It's a very simple game, but I understand its charm.

Man I remember when they were showing previews for this in Nintendo Power, I wanted to play it so badly. Didn't get to play it until years later but it was well worth it, hilarious RPG and really fun to play even if it was kinda simple. Loved the music to this as well

I didn't realize it until much later that this game was a beginner's RPG. Playing it as an adult and after I played Final Fantasy, I was able to breeze through it. But the simpler mechanics, timed hits, enjoyable length, and great writing make this one of my favorites on the SNES. I revisit it from time to time.

Also, Geno is awesome. I never expected him in Smash, but more than happy with his Gunner outfit.

Edit: I wasted so much time in Beetle Mania and spent all my money on purpose just so I could work at the inn in Marrymore. It wasn't until much later that I discovered Grate Guy Casino was a real thing. This game was full of secrets.

I remember seeing this game in local magazines (only for it not to be released here for another 19+- years). Back then I totally thought it was some kind of open-world Mario Solstice game. To this day I still wonder how awesome something like that'd be instead.

As it is, game is alright. Randomly came across it for the first time when I was finding roms after discovering SNES emulation. I place this game, together with Sunshine, in the weird Mario games category. I mean, Mario's world is already strange, but RPG is so weird and different from the other established games/world with its plot and enemy design. Axem Rangers? A Wario knockoff? Giant skeleton mammoth enemy? Weeeeiiiiird

My first game where I got scammed over on eBay \o/
Paid $30 for it, was defective on arrival, even though it wasn't labeled as such.
Got a rusted pin that literally broke off when touched once :(

I'm just glad it was rereleased on both the Wii's and Wii U's Virtual Console.

One of my favorite games of all time. I play it at least once a year from start to finish. I might start a new game tonight.

I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time, great stuff from Shimomura.

Game is up there with the best games ever made to me.

Also, beware the forest's mushrooms!

GOAT

Was my first rpg too , remember not knowing anything about leveling up, healing , XP x fp etc so my first play through was a struggle lol

But that game took me forever to beat/play, it was amazing
When I replay it , takes less time of course but still an amazing game

its possible that SMRPG are my favorite rpg too, love the humor and exploring, i love the feeling of reach a new map and discover what misteries it holds and how i gonna get the next star. Its the only snes game i still have in its original box

One of my favourite jRPGs ever. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing, and I really like the story and characters. It's a crazy and funny journey that somehow manages to fit everything perfectly together.

Here is 15 minutes of Forest Maze awesomeness.

Still to this day one of the few older games I will happily pick up and replay any time. It was my first RPG when I was a kid and my little mind was blown by "OMG I can play as a bad guy?!?!?" Bowser became my favorite villain largely because of this game.

Got it for Christmas 1996 after renting it months earlier. Mario, Bowser (with Lazy Shell Armor), and Geno. First RPG I ever played.

^^ Yeah, it first saw a pal release on Wii VC. Though if you had not heard about it until then it's no surprise you didn't notice its existence there either.

Anyhoos, if this comes around on n3ds VC I might play it again, it's been six years since the last time.

Any time I read the name of this game, the forest theme loops in my head for about an hour.

I loved Mario RPG as a kid, although oddly enough I have never finished it. It was my first RPG. It had such charm, and it always reminds me of a different age of RPGs.

I would be head over heels if Nintendo and Square collaborated on a true sequel on NX.

Happy anniversary Mario RPG!

For me, unfortunately, playing this game first back when it was released really soured me on the Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi style games that came after. I couldn't help but make comparisons.

It was amazing though, and next time I can play it on a device that is convenient I'd love to go through it again.

My favorite Bowser's Castle.

I've not played Sticker Star so don't know how accurate that is.

It is horrible to think of but I can't help but remember FFXIII when looking at that map :p

One of my favorite RPGs of all time. It has a variety of memorable qualities- humor, puzzles, secrets, bugs/exploits, amazing music, and just plain fun gameplay.

This game is of the reasons I keep my SNES set up in my living room, I play it once through every few years, long enough to not remember *everything*, and still have to figure a few things out- though the password in the sunken ship in ingrained in my memory forever. I remember working with my older brother and mom to figure it out the first time way back when it first came out.

This was my first RPG too. A gateway game that led to me spending the rest of the 90's and early 00's devouring every RPG I could get my hands on.

I really want this on my 3DS like yesterday, Nintendo.
