Super NES Classic Edition - Hands-On Hardware Preview

Proprietary controller plug puts the nail in my "I'll pass" coffin.

Get to crackin on that VC. I don't know that releasing these for "mind share" is all that great of a strategy given that the mind share to come out of the last one was "thanks a lot for making a thing nobody can buy."

Thr mindshare argument is a fanboy hypothesis. Never been discussed by Nintendo and never made sense given limited production

Really wish they would switch the Classics line to USB controllers. It's going to be increasingly strange if they stick to the Wii connector when their own console uses USB.

There are some variations in the game lineup and Japan has 22 overall whereras NA and Europe only have 21 games.

I think the biggest deals to me personally are NA/EUR having the exclusive on Earthbound whereas JP has the exclusive on Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack)

It would have been such a troll job if NoE added Terranigma lol and the NA version got left out.

As an American in Europe, I do have a soft nostalgic spot for the NA unit. It definitely tugs at that part of my brain more than the Eur/Jp unit.

And those concave buttons!

The design of the US SNES is horrific, but the greatest crime is removing the iconic coloured face buttons and replacing them with Parma Violet sweets.

Lots of old consoles look like shit. I grew up with the US one and the one I have nostalgia for. The super famicom looks awful to me and I have no feelings for it.

You know, it sucks we missed Terranigma back in the day, but y'all ain't get Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger OR Earthbound.

True and especially Chrono Trigger was awesome although I haven't played Mario RPG yet, so can't judge. But honestly, I wouldn't trade Terranigma for the world, I love that game to absolute death.

So because the US hasn't put any pre-orders up yet, we have Americans cannibalising European pre-orders.

Nintendo make no sense sometimes.

I'm sure the number of Americans snapping up European pre-orders is fairly negligible. It may sound like a common occurrence, but you're on a video game enthusiast site filled with hardcore Nintendo fans. The average American consumer probably has no idea how or where to go about putting in a foreign pre-order.

There are international users here who have admitted making multiple EU pre-orders 'just in case' they can't snag a USA one.

I wouldn't mind so much if the pre-orders went up all over the world at roughly the same time, but letting the European one be poached for this long without any alternatives is disheartening.

At this point all I can do is hope they increase shipment or do a second run because i'm sure as shit not likely to get one in the UK at this rate.

I mean, at enthusiasm forums you have people with access to more info making decisions your avarage buyer wouldn't. I know a lot of people who like me digitally buys everything Switch from japanese eShop so I can sometimes think "damn this is a sizeable amount", but it obviously isn't. The number of people buying digitally is low in the first place, and the number of the digital sales on japanese eShop coming from abroad is probs around 1%.

I'm sure the # of european SNES Classic getting hogged by americans are also around 1%.

Either way I hope pre-orders in the US go up soon, it'll be better for everyone involved.

Ew the fold down flap for controllers is pretty ugly, and I hate those flaps that have a dangly rubber bit for the hinge. Shame they couldn’t use the SNES ports for the controllers

Yeah, that is one ugly solution to a non existing problem. Well, it's a problem if you just want a SNES Mini on display or something but wouldn't the real thing be so much nicer in that case.

That controller cord is still too short. Should have gone a full 2m at least.

So glad we're definitely getting the EU SNES design over here too after seeing it in hand. Just don't like design of the US version at all.

Really like the flip down to reveal the ports myself, as it does a better job of keeping the original design intact, although would have worked better with wireless controllers instead.

Also, hearing Americans painfully spelling out S N E S constantly is so annoying in all these videos. Just makes anyone talking about them sound slow and awkward.

Get an 8bitdo SFC30.

Oh I've already got a NES30 Pro which I carry around with my tablet (though I've not been able to pair it with my friend's Switch like they claim to be able to do now). More just lamenting the lack of flexibility here and the lack of a perfectly adequate microUSB port or something similar. It seems odd too that they'd utilize a proprietary port from a family of systems that is now demonstrably dead.

Less fees to pay? They'd probably have to buy a license and this is just a little collector's item for them.

being from the uk I have ordered one, confirmed thankfully. but as I own a NTSC snes I will be looking to swap my uk one for a usa one once its in my hands as I think they look better, definitely not uglier lol

No one ever mentions it, but the "slide forward" power button on the NA SNES is such an aesthetic sense-pleasure.. I almost can't believe it's not on the other models of SNES.
I agree. That meaty "ka-chunk" of throwing the power on a US SNES is some good shit. Also, US carts you can browse rows of easily >>>>>>> int'l carts with blank-ass tops.

It's a shame that older consoles never got the official color variations and special editions that newer ones do. The line design and symmetry of the US SNES is solid, it'd be much less reviled if the purple bits were simply available in, say, red or blue instead. I think a lot of people just have an irrational aversion to the 'femininity' of purple.

(That 'pie tin' bottom on the US one is really dumb, tho. Dunno what they were thinking with that.)

Everyone saying the US SNES is ugly, and here I am thinking its the other way around.

The colors, the design, all of it is perfect.

What in the fuck? That would be absolute mayhem. Though, it doesn't explicitly say there won'tbe preorders, so I'd imagine they wouldn't be that crazy
Read closer. Nintendo themselves are not taking preorders. Also, there was another post that said they were waiting for FCC approval of the hardware. No need to panic yet.

Nah, I need my N64 classic controller. N64 VC games are terrible with the standard CC.

I don't know why they went with that flap on the front for the controller ports. As soon as you take it out of the box (assuming you actually do), you're going to plug the controllers in, and then for the console's entire lifespan it's going to have an ugly open flap on the front. If they'd just given you Wii controller ports on the front it'd look perfectly fine with the controllers connected.

i feel bad for americans.
its even worse for the poor guys that got the mini nes

Why are people celebrating the controller length issue has been solved when it's still only 5ft?

Because anyone that owned the nes classic already has compatible controller extensions

5 ft isn't that bad, about the length that the the original controllers for the super famicom came with.

If that's the case, then Nintendo has a last century mindset.
Sit in a line for 24 hours straight?
Or take 24 seconds to order it online?

It boggles the mind.

I've already conceded if there are no online orders then I'm SOL since having a job is going to prevent me from waiting in line to get one.

Except it enthusiasts and scalpers who are buying it. The thing doesn't have an ad campaign, but it sold out in Europe months before release?
You think that's casuals? The percentage is way higher than 1%

Give me that Super NES baby!!! NA version. I love how small it is. And it's NOT ugly. That's my baby. I's "beautiful".

They better not do us shady like the did with the NES classic. They need to mass produce the shit out of this thing. They better have millions for NA alone. I'm going to be so pissed if they under supply this thing. There's no excuse. They know demand will be through the fucking roof.

So what difference does it make if people still need to use an extension? 5ft still isn't long enough, it may as well be 5 inches.

5 foot is long enough for me, as it connects to my tv and sits on my desk. 3 foot would be (and was) too short even on a desk. Go ahead and order a couple beanbag chairs and you should be good to go.

I'm surprised there's so much SNES nostalgia from Europeans. SNES only sold 8 million total in the rest of the world outside of US/Japan. US/Japan combined for 40 million, with the US being the highest selling region at 23 million.

You do well not to believe it, because all SNES are powered on by sliding the button forward. The only difference is that the JP / EU version aren't a cheap piece of plastic that seems about to break of, as it slides inside a slot.

I agree. That meaty "ka-chunk" of throwing the power on a US SNES is some good shit.

I would imagine it's just as meaty and loud as the EU / JP ones, which is to say, freaking loud. :D

Also, US carts you can browse rows of easily >>>>>>> int'l carts with blank-ass tops.

Well if one's going to keep your carts out of their boxes as if they were raised in a barn, then sure, I guess. Let's eat food off the floor while we're at it!

I had no idea the difference between NA and EU/UK sales for the SNES was so great. Crazy. Having said that I can imagine the only people to think the NA version of the console is the better one are people who had one and are blinded by nostalgia, the rounded, sleek JP/EU SNES is a thing of beauty and the design holds up far better today than that purple boxy thing.

I just don't understand why they won't/don't do pre orders in the US. Surely they could then at least see demand.

The other countries do it, so they must know the allocation already.
