Surgeon finds 27 contacts in patient's eye

Don't forget to remove your contacts, GAF!

A “blueish mass” of 17 contact lenses has been discovered in the eye of a patient who was scheduled for cataract surgery.

The 67-year-old patient was unaware that the contact lenses were missing, and later told surgeons that she thought her discomfort was due to dry eye and old age.

Specialist trainee ophthalmologist, Rupal Morjaria, told OT that another 10 individual contact lenses were discovered in the woman’s eye following further examination at Solihull Hospital.

The operating team, which included an ophthalmologist with more than 20 years of experience, were startled by the discovery, Ms Morjaria explained.

“None of us have ever seen this before,” she added.

“It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there,” Ms Morjaria elaborated.

Ms Morjaria said the patient did not report any symptoms linked to the missing lenses in her pre-operative assessment.

“She was quite shocked. When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable. She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye,” Ms Morjaria shared.

Just how out of it was she? My God, keep her on glasses permanently. The human body's tolerance for our silliness never ceases to amaze me.

How.......?

I mean, first I notice the moment my contact slides behind my eyelid. Second, it bothers me like hell until I can get it out.

What?

One contact slips in your eye and it's hell. This lady had that many and she somehow didn't tear her own eyeball out?

There's something going on with the person besides the contacts. Alzheimer or something mental going on.

This may be one of my bigger fears regarding contacts.

This seems almost completely impossible, or the lady has some kind of nerve damage where she's not feeling it or I don't know what.

It's almost always *very* obvious when a contact slips behind your eye, and even in the rare cases when you're not sure (that has happened to me, admittedly), it comes back out eventually.

To be honest, this should allay all fears about losing a contact, considering you can apparently have SEVENTEEN contacts stuck in your eye without any permanent damage.

how would it have not been immediatly obvious to anyone that looked at her, let alone to herself when she added a new contact, that there was something wrong?

I'm just completely at a loss about this. Like wouldn't have the receptionist have gasped when looking at her. I mean, has a single human being looked at her, eye to eye, since this started?

This as well. I don't understand how it got to the point of scheduling surgery.

A Wal-Mart doctor should have been able to spot it.

And these people vote and drive...
Been watching the new season of Kimmy Schmidt finally and this made me think of Judah Friedlander having Titus sing about how we throw out old eggs and should do the same thing with people. 😂

For the topic at hand..I can't even fathom this. I truly have no idea how it could happen. Over the years I've had a contact or two go behind my eye so to speak and I freak the hell out and do everything I can to get it out. I guess maybe this just kept happening while she was asleep? That is the only possible way I could even imagine it happening more than once.

I assumed they slipped behind her eye.

Only 17. Not 27. Sorry, but I hope the mods can change the title.
No it's 27 total. It's just that 17 were forming one big chunk while later examinations revealed 10 more floating around individually.

What I wonder if all of those were just in one eye. Did she have no problems removing contacts from the other one?

Been wearing contacts for years and years. Sometimes I think I might have an extra one back in one of my eyes, forgotten from long ago. Who can say. But this is just crazy.

I got ONE contact up my eye once, I wasn't sure about it admittedly, but it came out a few minutes later, since I was trying around before my mirror and there was no doubt that something was off.

Now 27 is just fucking crazy.

That's ridiculous. Just one contact used to sometimes irritate me. Not knowing you have 27 of them bastards in a single eye is crazy. It was always easy for me to tell when a contact wasn't properly aligned or whatever.
