No more bullshit with Dosbox/VDMS, config file nonsense, salting the fries blah blah

You unpack the file, double click on the exe (tiny config for monitor etc) and you are set.
In addition, you can now play the game in a 1024 rez, which is alot nicer on the eye than the original.

Alas, no mouse look, so prepare to move with the mouse and look with the keys...

Difficult to get into at the start, but stick with it, its a true classic.

Wow, that's strange. I just reinstalled this for the first time in a few years last night.

2 things:

Make sure you run OggSetup.exe after unpacking the files or you won't get any sound. Also, disable any extra CPU cores when playing unless you want the game to crash every 30 seconds.

edit: Nevermind, I'm talking about SS2.

This is System Shock, not System Shock 2.
For those of you reading who may be confused by the gfx when you install it

i want to play system shock 2 on vista but the game literally crashes on me completely randomly within 2 - 4 minutes of starting it. : (

I had the same problem in XP. Disable all but one of your CPU cores for the Shock2.exe process. If you don't have multiple cores, I'm out of ideas.

I'm also having extreme difficulty with SS2. It won't run on XP, and I've tried all the various patches/fixes floating around. It gets to 99% on the installation, and then quits. Simply copying the files to my hard drive manually nets me gameplay through the tutorial (without sound), but crashes upon loading the first mission posting. I'd really, really like to play this in preparation for BioShock.

Try the ttlg forums they have a nice and complete technical FAQ and they're quite helpfull. Anyway I might try SShock 1 with this baby.

Mouselook didn't come around until Quake, if I remember correctly. And even then, it wasn't a default control option. You had to edit the config file to enable it.

Im using XP and I can get the game into the main menu and watch the opening cinematic -- but after that it crashes and gets some error about memory for graphics card and to check that I have up to date drivers.

Im updating my drivers now so fingers crossed.

Check out the sytem shock 2 thread for info on where I got it. cost me 5bux - abandonware,

Check out the SS2 thread, there is a link to the file to make it run. but slaughter a goat or two first.

Breakthrough:

Symptoms:
Graphical glitches may occur with these video
cards, or the game may not load at all.

Reason:
Unknown, possibly just due to outdated drivers.

Solution:
Create a file called user.cfg in your System
Shock 2 folder, or if the file is already
present, open it for editing.
Anywhere in the file enter the text:
safe_texture_manager
on a line of it's own. Save the file and run
System Shock 2, your problem should be solved.

BAM! Works perfectly now.
