Take-Two talks about the future of Battleborn

Read my first, and only real post addressing you, again.

It still makes no sense and has no point, not wasting anymore time on someone so clueless, goodluck hating on a game you never had any intention of playing.

I love Overwatch but I feel Battleborn is the more fun game overall for me due to my tastes.

The co-op replayable missions are tons fun and where I spend all my time. The various PvP modes also offer a lot more variety than OW IMO. I find my self logging off after 3-4 OW match's in search of something different as it gets abit samey.

That said BB's art style, voice direction, cut scenes and story are not very good. OW in comparison is awesome.

If OW had a pve mode to mix it up it would be perfect for me, as it stands I've spent more time with BB than Overwatch. Weird considering I hated the BB beta and only picked it up a couple weeks ago for £10.

I am still surprised that there are so many characters in this game. When I purchased it at launch I only had access to four and couldn't click with any of them.

Wish they had made a new Borderlands instead. Making a very similar game to one from a much more competent and loved developer just doesn't make much sense at all. And to launch it around the same time was just suicidal.

F2P makes sense. I haven't played Battleborn, but everything I've seen of it just looks completely uninteresting.

As an aside: Take-Two is an interesting company, because out of all the major publishers, they seem like the only ones who try to give games they publish a fair chance with regards to dev time/budget etc. I almost wonder if stuff like the Rockstar games has them take a very hands-off approach in hopes they might have something truly great pop out of the game dev oven. Examples I'd include such as Spec Ops: The Line, Mafia 2, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Bioshock Infinite.

Not all of these games are great mind you, but I just feel like in the hands of any other publisher, the amount of development troubles these games had would've resulted in either sweeping development focus shifts or just straight-up cancellation.

While it's been true that Take-Two has historically been very generous to its developers, you are correct that Rockstar really does help. In particular, GTA V has been massively, massively successful, and GTA Online micro transactions are continuing to grow. It's getting to the extent that if Take-Two stopped selling any other game tomorrow, they'll probably break even. I would say they would be second only to Valve in their ability to absorb the cost of bombs right now.

The whole game just seems like such a frustrating mishmash of styles and tone. The humor is awful and the gameplay just looks confusing with a cluttered UI. It does look fun to an extent and I'd be interested to try it, but not for 60 bux. I probably should have picked it up in that recent Humble Bundle. Hard to justify paying too much money for a game that doesn't have people playing - which is a vicious cycle, obviously.

I wish the character designs were way more consistent. Art design and art direction are such an important part of what I look for in a game; it doesn't matter that the graphics are *good*, just that the art design is stylish and cool and in good taste. There are a handful of good designs here: Phoebe, Thorn, Miko, Alani, Marquis. I would play the game just to try out those characters. But the awful designs - Montana, Attikus, Toby (what is it with these hero shooters and little furry animals piloting big mechs, there's also one in Paladins and another in Paragon), Kleese aka Grandpa Metron, Caldarius, which just looks like a floating heap of random polygonal shapes, etc. The worst has to be Isic:

I mean, look at this:

This is possibly one of the ugliest designs I've ever seen in any game ever. I just don't relish the idea of spending a great deal of time looking at characters like this. Again, I'd be willing to try it and be proven wrong, but there's so much working against it for me.

To me Battleborn characters look like something out of the Dreamworks cartoon. That's not a compliment btw.

Is it wrong that one of the reasons that I never cared about this game is I don't want to give Randy Pitchford any money? Things he's said in the past just make him seem like a complete asshat, and I don't care to really give money to Gearbox anymore.

Finish what you started with Battleborn Take2 but when you start thinking to do sequel or second season of DLCs just stop and give that money to Bluepoint Games to do RDR Remastered.

It's not really the designs. it's the art style that is fugly. The art direction is terrible from top to bottom. Yes it's all a mish mash of contrasting designs, but any good artist worth their salt could bind them together with a style that wasn't just flat out unappealing.

Thanks for this post.

I tired Batlleborn during the open beta weekend prior to release and a few things about that:

- Was fairly lost as to what to do in the different multiplayer modes. (Or maybe they were just different map types? Very unclear.)
- Didn't like the save system for the single player / campaign elements.
- Didn't like the character unlocking system.
- Didn't like the cosmetic options available for the characters.
- The game had odd issues and performed poorly, sometimes crashing to desktop. (My machine is 3.4Ghz, 16Gb RAM, HD 7000 series at the time,)
- Wasn't a fan of many of the characters.
- Enjoyed the co-op mission (only did one) with my friends because it was very Borderlands. (LOVED BL2.)

The fact that the game was $60 killed any chance we were going to buy it. Your enjoyment of it combined with the recent price point has me considering picking it up. It'll more than likely be F2P soon but if they offer Founder benefits like Evolve, then that might be all the more reason to pick up a cheap copy now.

I would like to say that I really liked the opening cartoon intro of this game. If the game managed to capture that energy style, I'd be all in. The animation may look a little shoddy and rushed, but I appreciated what it was trying to do. Always loved those Bakshi joints and the rotoscoped style of stuff like Wizards, Fire and Ice, etc.

It's your money. Do whatever you want.

I found battle born to be much more engaging and a better overall package than overwatch, I think the characters are much more original, especially since none of the varied female characters feel overly sexualized. I find overwatch design to be generic and bland at best, and a lot of them trite (reaper is more bland than any battlborn such as whiskey foxtrot or oscar mike - the equivalents of soldier 76).

I find it sad that this game garned a lot of unjustified hate simply for being vaguely similar to a blizzard title, even though it brings a lot more new ideas to the FPS genre that team fortress 2.5. It has both single and multiplayer, but all the reviewers ignored the core experience (multi) and focused on the middling PvE experience. I don't think it got many fair reviews.

I only stopped playing because it was making my backlog approach irreversible heights, especially with all the holiday games approaching. I still try to log on once a week (on console) and have never had a problem finding a game, in fact I have had more server issues with overwatch than it.

My main gripe is that they never discounted the season pass, even though they had firesafes on the full game + season pass frequently. Way to burn your day 1 supporters.

Honestly the game needs to follow evolve and give every single purchaser of the current game all content and extra unique skins, and bring in the masses with F2P. I think more people would really enjoy the game if they gave it a fair shot. Every one of my friends I had play it was surprised how much fun they had after all the negativity they had heard about it online.

What little marketing the game had was really poor, and Blizz went out of their way to quash it as much as possible, although pitchford is a dumbass and brought that on himself. The game should have been branded as Borderlands arena, called every character a vault hunter, and it would have done a lot better. The name is awful and generic. I'm just sad because it is genuinely a fun game.

I still don't understand the hate for the art.

It also has the most diverse cast compared to most games.

I mean, I don't disagree with you that there's a lot of diversity in the cast, but regardless of that I still think the art style is too busy, inconsistent and generally bloody repugnant.

Oh.

Hi Randy.

The problem that I see with this is that Evolve was considered a good game stylistically and gameplay-wise which was destroyed by a lack of content causing it to become repetitive too quickly which they attempted to solve by throwing a mass of DLC at the players, expecting them to pay more for a game with an adequate amount of content, further destroying the game by bringing imbalance with it.

Battleborn flopped because the character design sucks (particularly compared to the competition in Overwatch during the launch window) the writing is grating as fuck (par for the course as of Borderlands 2 onwards) and the missions are terribly balanced slogs that are too easy to fail. Never say never and all that, but the IP is just lame.

You can fix balance, mechanics and content with updates, but you can't fix what's wrong with Battleborn.

Lots of good intentioned people put a lot of effort into the game, so I feel bad for their sake, but at the same time I can't help but feel some schadenfreude at one of Pitchford's projects eating shit.

I'm all for optimism in the videogame industry but he is kidding himself. Batlleborn has no future. Only a painful crawl into the inevitable.

I wonder how shitty it feels to be on that team and see the entire internet taking joy in the failure of the game, not only accepting that it failed, but taking every chance to laugh at it and kick it while its down.

The only game I've ever seen with so many people actively going out of their ways to express their hatred is Metroid Prime: Federation Force and people hate Battleborn 1000x more than Federation Force.

The saddest part is that it's an incredible game that people decided to hate months before it even came out, they already made their minds up that the only thing they could do was shit all over it since its a Gearbox game.

You're entitled to your opinion but the vast vast majority of people disagree with you. Most find the art direction in the game lacking both in appeal and cohesion. Most find the actual shooting/attacking in the gamd to be incredibly unsatisfying/unimpactful because of the total lack of hit feedback. Most find the hodgepodge gameplay of buzz word genres thrown together to be incredibly awkward and unrewarding to play. You may think it's a good game but regardless of what you think it has serious issues and that is why people don't like it not because it was made by Gearbox.

Now I will admit the reason people (myself included) like to revel in its failure is because Rabdy Ptchford is the scum of the earth and seeing him taken down a peg or two or watching his piles of bullshit tumble down around him is an incredibly satisfying thing.

Borderlands 3 will flop just as hard, people hate Gearbox games and take joy in their failures.

Must suck to be a fan of their games but it is what it is.

Battleborn is the first game of theirs that I've enjoyed and I have no idea how the company is still around with the amount of hatred and vitriol constantly thrown their way.

Oh ffs. No. Stop this crap. The game didn't fail because of Gearbox it failed because it's an incredibly unappealing game to 99% of the gaming population. Especially since there are other options that audiences find vastly more appealing. This persecution complex you've latched onto as an excuse does not permeate gaming culture and is in no way responsible for the terrible performance of this game.

You are free to like the game but denying that it has any flaws or reasons to have not succeeded other than the studio it was made by is absurd.

Oh hey, what a surprise someone that actually played the game likes it.

You're a scumbag if you take joy in the failure of any game since it obviously affects everyone working on it regardless of your personal opinion of one man that's involved.

And, also, the world allows you now – the world of interactive entertainment allows you now to have more than one bite at the apple.

So what he's saying is they knew it would go free to play, but they released it as 60$ to make some money on selling the game initially rather than launching as F2P?

Pretty scummy.

This thing that reminds me of Midna

Orendi really should've got more marketing love because if there's any one character that made me sit up and pay any attention to the game it's her (but I'm also a big Midna fan XD)
Meanwhile, Phoebe was the first character they showed that I legitimately thought "huh, I wouldn't mind playing as her"

That said, I kind of agree with the representation of the characters in-game not being super appealing. Orendi's 3d model looks oddly awkward at times, especially in the facial area and doesn't really live up to the 2D art a lot of the time:

So let me get this straight not only do you excise a single paragraph from an entire post addressing your argument but you then proceed to call me a scumbag for admitting to enjoy seeing Randy Pitchford take a loss? The difference between me and you is that I actually admit to my somewhat illogical feelings and recognize them as such whereas you spout them off as if they are indisputable fact without any indication whatsoever that they are actually opinions all the while dismissing or ignoring any and all things that go against them. Have fun shouting at everyone from atop the mountain of denial and delusion you've made for yourself.

They should just stop wasting effort on it and double down on Borderlands 3. This game was obviously a huge mistake even without Overwatch releasing near the same time. It's not a horrible game, just mediocre.

Everyone says this game should go free to play, I don't see this game doing well even if it was free.

I think take-two should just cut their losses. I'm guessing most gamers have already seen this game and have said "no thanks"

Releasing a F2P version would cost them so little. There not gonna shut down the servers especially when they sold a season pass.

I would play it if its free.
It doesnt look good enough to buy to me , imo. Not to mention the player base on pc is almost non-existant.
