1.) What exactly is Tales of Symphonia Chronicles?

-Chronicles is an HD collection including two games: Tales of Symphonia and its sequel, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. The original Tales of Symphonia was initally released on GCN in all regions, and later ported to PS2 in Japan, which is the version this collection is based off of. That means this is the first time North America and Europe will see the PS2 version changes in the game. Dawn of the New World was originally released for Nintendo Wii.

2.) What are the differences between the PS2 version and the GCN version of Tales of Symphonia?

The framerate is 30FPS, compared to the 60FPS GCN version.

-Graphical changes such as
  • Angel wing colors
  • Sheena's summons now have a cutaway portrait image
  • Skits have more dynamic potraits, changing size and motion
  • More post-battle poses
  • A couple more anime cutscenes during the game
-New costumes, mostly from the "Flanoir/Heimdall Events" with whatever character has highest affinity with Lloyd
-New artes and elemental variations on artes
-New Unison Attacks
-Every character has a 'Mystic Arte'
-Fixed several bugs such as learning both T&S artes
-Many bosses have new moves on higher difficulties
-Casino added to Altamira
-Forbidden Book extra dungeon has 5 more floors and new monsters
-
During the "Flanoir Event", Kratos no longer comes in automatically as the fourth visitor. If you refuse the first two visitors, you will automatically go with the third.
-
The Earth Dragon in the Earth Temple now drops 1000 Gald instead of 10000. Howver the Gold Dragon in the Torent Forest now drops 8300 Gald instead of 1052.
-
The kendama Devil's Arm is now a casino prize, rather than bought in Altamira.

You can find a more detailed list here

3.) Besides additions to the PS2 version, what changes does Chronicles have?

-Both Japanese and English voice tracks
-All 3 openings tracks are included in the game (NA, JP GCN, JP PS2)
-The NA release uses the dialog font from the European GCN version.
-Cameo costume added for each character, unlocked via save file from the respective games or upon a second playthrough (unsure if Japanese saves will count for Vesperia/Xillia 2)
-Fixed graphical slowdowns
-Includes additions to the PAL version of Dawn of the New World, such as Gallery Mode, Skits Library, Image Library, as well as head accessories in the game.
-New 'cut-ins' for Mystic Artes drawn by ufotable, such as the example below

Gravelord_Nito and Makoto Yuki helped me put things together.

Inb4 people complain about amazon still doesn't have a date for order but they preordered it 6+ months ago and that the shipping box will be smaller than the CE box.

at this point i'm just collecting CEs for ps3 lol. and i don't have a release date for my CE ;P

The title made me laugh, so good job.

That said, I don't approve of using the absolutely terrible dialog font from the GC version in the images. Let's all forget that ever existed.

Yes! Can't wait for this. I have the CE with 2 day shipping coming to me. I'll add the artbook I got from the gamecube preorder back in the day. Its like my favorite Tales of, besides Vesperia.

Bring it on! :)

I'm in the mood to replay Symphonia and I still haven't tried out DotNW, so I'll definitely pick this up. It probably won't get much attention until I finish Bravely Default, though.

By the way, you might want to put a spoiler warning for the Kratos video.

Original ToS was the best blind purchase I ever made. The good old days - "Hey look! Dat cover looks neat!" Won't double dip though. Hope people enjoy it though. There can't be enough Tales-fans in the west.

Does anyone know if they got the original English voice actors back to do the Hi-Ougis for the originals that weren't in the cube version?

I paid good money for this Dynex!
What a fucking fraud. 30fps? Really? Screenshots look pretty bad, too.

Anyway, the original Symphonia is great. For those who can get over the terrible visuals (ironically, the reason one would buy an HD port), it's totally worth playing.

No 60fps no buy. I'm perfectly happy with my GC version. I really wanted to buy this but there's no way I'm going from 60 to 30.

And to be fair people, this is a port of the PS2 version. Which was 30FPS to begin with. Yeah its a basic port job, but it could've been a lot worse.

Yeah, but trying playing it in 480p(gamecube) on your current TV. Would look worse than this. Sure it could have some texture rework, but just be happy its in 720p widescreen.

Well, sure you're right but this is a re-release 10 years later. And it would be 60 FPS if I dug out the gamecube game (and free instead of $40, obviously). I don't expect magic out of HD re-releases but this seems like a pretty dang lazy one to me. I mean main character model texture improvements are a pretty small thing to ask for.

I loved Symphonia back in the day, but I never played Dawn of the New World. Wasn't it widely considered kind of horrible? That's what I remember hearing, anyway.

Man, some of those screenshots look pretty awful

So HD.

Yeah, Christ. I was planning on getting this back when it was announced because I remember wanting it when I was a kid, and now that I have played some other Tales games I really want it, but this no 60fps stuff is getting me down and that screen shot there makes me think the graphics aren't going to be looking to hot either.

For those who gloss over the OP, a while back Kotaku posted a useful comparison between the PS3 and GCN version. You won't see the framerate difference of course.

Well that won me back on the graphic side. Though it was still the framerate that killed it for me anyway.

It's a port of the inferior version of the game. There's no defending that. This looked better and ran better on the Gamecube a decade ago. I'm sure that if you piped the GC original through an XRGB or something, it'd look at least as good as this, without the missing outlines on characters, and at 60fps. Why on earth should one pay money for an HD port that can't even get the most basic aspect of an HD port right?

I expect some poor reactions to the combat this time around, personally.

For some reason your title actually got me for a second and I had to read it again to figure it out and see the reference lol.

Not interested in buying this but I hope the people who will be trying this for the first time like it. It was a pretty fun experience when I played it back around its original release, and the game still has a lot of charm to me, particularly the world and music.

If they don't have a gamecube anymore? Trust me. On my TV at least, PS2/GCN era games look awful.

I suppose some will find it overly simplistic if they're used to say... Xillia or Graces F, but I still think it's fast and fluid enough that one would still have a lot of fun with it. There's a certain appeal to Symphonia's simplicity.

Wait, it's seriously 30FPS? Oh, c'mon, Bamco, really? Really?

On the upside, that'll make sure I don't make the gigantic mistake of trying to play Symphonia again. I was in a very different place when I played the Gamecube version a decade ago, and I know darn well I shouldn't go back.
