Team Ninja & Nintendo - NEW METROID on Wii!

All depends what you like I guess. For me I loved the Prime games and I've been pretty iffy on pretty much everything from Team Ninja that I've played before now. The trailer did look pretty fun, and I'm really happy that Nintendo is actually going to take a bit of a risk with one of their keystone franchises. So regardless of my semi-distaste for Team Ninja I'm giving this news a cautious thumbs up for now.
I loved the Prime games, they were some of the best of the best. This looks like another way of doing the series. I'm not sure about Samus having voice, but it does make a little sense for an origin story.

I think this could be a really great game regardless of my love for Metroid Prime. It doesn't have to be pick and choose. Prime got 3 games, if Metroids going to come back(which it obviously was) it was time for a new spin on it.

I'm like completely geeking out right now. I hope Team Ninja delivers.

Just what the Metroid series needed: zero art direction, mindlessly putting aliens into submission holds, and CG cutscene bullshit all over the place
There was nothing mindless or all over the place about that trailer. It was pure awesome, plain and simple.

The art direction is unsurprisingly bad. Looks like Ninja Gaiden.

Still excited to play it though.

EDIT: Not as bad in screens.

it would look like ninja gaiden, cause this game feels like a a skinned ninja gaiden game

but either way, art direction feels the same because the main art director left with Itagaki to Tokyo Vikings

I can understand that. I really hope this new game will be able to cater to classic fans as well. While I'm really excited for this new direction, I do feel some apprehension.

Hopefully they just focused more on the action oriented parts.

talking to nintendo fans is like trying to get an autistic kid to look you directly in the eye.
Am I the "Nintendo fan" you're talking about? :lol

I'm not a Nintendo apologist by a long shot, but I just find it amazing all the people that get mad at them for milking their old franchises as if that's something new. THAT'S WHAT THEY DO. They milk old franchises, and they have a major focus on a part of the market that are not GAFfers (Wii Fit, vitality monitor, etc.). Getting angry at them for that is like eating a spoonful of sugar and being pissed off that it's not sour.

Never really been a big Metroid fan (in that I haven't played many of the games, not that I dislike them), but for some reason I like hearing about new games in the series. Really interesting to see where the series goes imo.

The hater reactions to this remind me of the reactions years ago to the news that Metroid on the Gamecube would be done by an American studio and be a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER NOOOOOOOOOO!!! EPIC BETRAYAL OF FRANCHISE BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH GARGLE SNORT HOWL YARBLE FARBLE

:lol

It's Team Ninja. God bless what they do but that trailer seems to show exactly what this Metroid is going to be about. Hyperfrenetic visuals, exaggerated actions, and cutscenes with a million cuts. Atmosphere isn't what Team Ninja does. But I guess that's fine because this is likely just a side game to traditional Metroid. It's going to be awesome for what it is.

Agreed and I'm fine with this being a different take on it. I'm sure there's no way Nintendo will allow this game not to be great for what it is. However I love Metroid for the atmopshere and exploration. Not overdone story, crappy CG cutscenes, bad art, and over the top ridiculous Team Ninja action.

I'll glady play this and probably find some fun in it, but it's not what I want from Metroid. I'd rather they allowed Team Ninja to do this with Kid Icarus or just allow them to make a brand new franchise for Nintendo instead of forcing Metroid into it.

Yeah.

Most combat in Metroid games (save probably MP3 and of course the shitty Hunters) is merely a small obstacle that keeps things fresh and interesting as you explore each environment.

Here it seems to be the main focus. I hope that's not the case, even if the combat does look pretty snazzy.

I really wish this was coming out this year. This is what I've always wanted from Metroid. By far the highlight of Nintendo's conference.

Super Metroid is my favorite game ever, and I still think this looks fucking awesome. Then again, I happen to love Ninja Gaiden, and have no qualms whatsoever with Nintendo taking a risk again with one of their main franchises. Haters can suck a damn dick.

I like the new art direction and (hypothetical) focus on combat. Most of my most memorable metroid memories are epic boss battles and combat, not wandering around aimlessly.

Uhhh...but Team Ninja is a part of Tecmo...<_<

For some reason I thought it was an independent studio formed by Itagaki that was hired by Tecmo--anyway, now that I know this, what has Team Ninja done (if anything) without Itagaki's involvement?

Does Team Ninja still have a lot of talent now that Itagaki left along with some of the other team members to form their own company?

This looks pretty damn good for what it (probably) is - a story-driven, action-oriented Metroid spinoff. I just hope we get Metroid V or Prime 4 eventually.

I actually don't mind the art direction; it's certainly a departure from the Prime series, but it should work pretty well with the style and tone Team Ninja is going for.

The art direction is incredibly bad and it looks pretty action-focused (do not want). But then again, this is Team Ninja so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I'm still kind of excited, but yeah, I have some skepticism for those reasons. Also unsure about the gameplay -- seemed to be showing 2.5D, 3rd-person 3D, and first-person elements?

Yo dudes um... it's not like earlier Metroids were just wandering around aimlessly in a vast undiscovered labyrinth. Until prime, they were fairly fast-paced, especially towards the endgame when Samus is powerful as fuck and it's crazy fun to play because you just blast around and destroy shit. Obviously I will wait until I see gameplay footage that's not from battles but the fact that the battles look fairly exciting is hardly something I'm going to count as a negative. Cutscenes will likely be awful, but I didn't care much for the ones in Prime 3 either so that doesn't really bother me. I also am liking the art direction thus far... I honestly don't know what people are complaining about? Is it just that it's Team Ninja?

As I've said, this is a collaboration. It's not just Team Ninja running away with Metroid and doing what they want with it, just as that wasn't the case with Retro and Metroid Prime.

They have never been risk adverse with the Metroid series.

Hell they gave it to a startup with no game under their belt, and a ton of managerial issues. That turned out terrific.

This could be a fuckawesomesauce Metroid game. I definitely like what I see so far.

The art direction is growing on me and it's not that bad to begin with. I'm just not fond of Team Ninja's graphic style. Too plastic looking.

This. I'm going to reserver judgement because this is just a trailer and I'm sure they're just trying to wow people, but the best parts of Metroid were never the action sequences.

I'm surprised that more people have not realized this.

Just like Retro's first attempt at Metroid Prime, Nintendo can and will step in for quality control.

As for art direction.. well.. everything looks like Metroid fare to me. Hell, Ridley looks more faithful to his original appearances than he was in the Prime series, for instance.

Team Ninja doesn't exactly inspire me. After a near perfect trilogy from Retro, what the hell can Team Ninja bring to the table (in terms of OVERALL quality, not gameplay style, 2D/3D, etc)?

Still, very, VERY much looking forward to it.

It's not a real Metroid game.
Oh so you know how its structured then? Didn't realize they told us this info and can you please explain the camera

fixed. How do you know we aren't exploring an overworld map looking for upgrades in order to progress?

You played Prime 3???

I played all of them. The first Prime game was the best, but 3 was kinda meh. And it didnt look leaps and bounds better then the 1st one.

I am more excited for this game. Plus Nintendo is guiding them with the direction.
