“If I’d really believed that we had just screwed the pooch, to make a pun,” Landgraf continues, “then I would have believed that maybe, if we’d marketed the show that we actually had put on the air for a second season, we could actually find an audience. But I can’t look at this data and come to the conclusion that we didn’t market the show that went on the air. We did. Now, did we market it perfectly? No. You rarely do. And maybe it was highly imperfect. But the reality is that there were hundreds and hundreds of people that saw ads that accurately reflected the show, we got 14 million people to sample it, and for whatever reason, it didn’t resonate.”

I completely understand the cancelation. The show really is something so different from anything else on TV that it doesn't really fit anywhere. Which is too bad.

When you talk to the USA-type viewer, they rate it lower than their favorite shows because it’s not a land in which every babe is hot, and the sky is incredibly blue, and everybody lives in an apartment three times as big as they could legitimately afford, and everything comes out great in the end. What we ended up with—and this is a much more nuanced and complicated answer—was a show that somehow fell between two brands.”

Well I guess I get to be the first to make a LTTP: Terriers post. (Though don't really blame me, I'm Canadian and I don't even think it aired here and I will definitely grab the DVD)
Just marathon watched the whole season over the past week after a comment made in The Walking Dead thread (Terriers IS better, incidentally).
Sad to see it go, but the comparisons to Veronica Mars are so perfect that it's bittersweet seeing the show end on such a high note.

Tim Minear, one of TERRIERS’ executive producers with Shawn Ryan and series creator Ted Griffin, is no stranger to short-lived television series. After working in a show-runner capacity on WONDERFALLS and the legendary FIREFLY and creating DRIVE (which lasted two weeks). Heck, even his Twitter handle is actually CancelledAgain.

He’s also worked on a few other shows that lasted longer, albeit still had somewhat abrupt exits, including THE ADVENTURES OF LOIS AND CLARK and, with Joss Whedon, ANGEL and DOLLHOUSE. However, Minear agrees that the TERRIERS experience is unlike any he has had before.

- Update on the DVD/BRD situation from Sepinwall and Shawn Ryan:

A 'Terriers' DVD update from Shawn Ryan

When "Terriers" was heading towards the finish line of its first, only, brilliant, abysmally-rated season, Fienberg and I kept trying to console ourselves and the private eye drama's other fans with the notion that the series had a clear beginning, middle and end and would live forever beautifully on DVD.

However, there hasn't been much news on the DVD front since FX announced the cancellation, John Landgraf spoke, I interviewed Ted Griffin, etc. And given that the DVD market has shrunk enough in recent years that not everything gets released anymore, I began to worry. So I checked in with "Terriers" executive producer Shawn Ryan, who's been busy with the launch of FOX's "The Chicago Code," and he had some potentially good news to share.

He said Fox Home Video had financial concerns about producing a "Terriers" DVD, since a low-rated series suggested potential low sales, there won't be a second season on FX on which they could piggyback their marketing(*), etc.

(*) As Landgraf helped explain to me a while back, that's the reason DVD sets are released so close to the new season of a show: the home video divisions don't usually have big marketing budgets, so if they time the release to the TV premiere of the next season, the network winds up doing a lot of the promotion for them.

But, Shawn continued, "after some pressing, Fox Home Video is in talks with a major, major company to do an exclusive 'Terriers' DVD release. We'd do commentaries for the eps and extras as well. Unclear right now whether it would be standard DVD, Blu-Ray or both. This deal isn't finalized yet so I don't want to say more than that, but things are looking more promising than they were a month ago for a release."

He added that the show will also be available on Netflix streaming and iTunes, giving fans of the show multiple platforms on which to access it, proselytize to their friends, etc.

I'll keep you posted when I know more, but I feel much better now about this than I did a few weeks ago.

Have they ever mentioned if there was a bible for future seasons, or if they'd ever talk about it?

With such a character driven show, it's probably not as substantial as more plot-focused shows, but it'd still be nice to hear what they had in mind.

My first impression was they were talking to a specialty DVD production company, like maybe Shout! or something, but it sounds more like a retailer exclusive. I just want Blu-ray. I don't care how that happens.

They didn't even really have season one fully planned out when they started. They did say that the baby would have turned out to be Britt's.

I'm happy with the way it ended. Sure, I would have loved to have seen more, but it really did feel like a nice little mini-series. I also can't get enough of Gunfight Epiphany. Such an awesome theme song.

I mean, they won't get Terriers. That's not even possible. Shawn Ryan is making a pilot for instance. Everyone's off doing other things, the show is far far far far dead.

Sounds like it'd be pretty tough to pull off, but it's certainly an intriguing idea.
