(CNN) -- Several people have been killed in a series of coordinated attacks targeting Mumbai sites popular with tourists and business people, according to police and CNN's sister network in India.

Ongoing battles between police and gunmen were reported at two five-star hotels.

Gunmen armed with automatic weapons and grenades attacked targets including the hotels, a cafe, and a train station, police say.

Maharashtra state government spokesman Bhushan Gagri said 78 people killed and about 200 wounded, while police confirmed 26 deaths.

Among the dead is the head of the Maharashtra state's anti-terror squad, who apparently died in the violent aftermath of the attacks rather than being a target for the killers.

The attacks included five shootouts and two grenade attacks, said a police officer at Mumbai's police control room.

Mumbai police spokesman Satish Katsa said gunmen have taken over the Taj Mahal Hotel and Hotel Oberoi, and were holding hostages on multiple floors.

Earlier, A.N. Roy, the police chief of Maharashtra state, said his force was still involved with suspected militants at the two five-star hotels.

IBN reported ongoing gun battles at both hotels. At least two explosions were reported at the Taj.

One witness told local reporters gunmen had tried to find people with U.S. or British passports.

IBN, quoting police sources, reported hostages were taken at the two hotels.

The attacks began about 2230 local time (1700 GMT) and more than two hours later witnesses were reporting new explosions and gunfire.

The targets include businesses frequented by international visitors in the city which is India's financial center.

CNN correspondent Andrew Stevens said: "We are getting reports of ongoing incidents at the railway station and the Oberoi Hotel.

"We do not know if this has reached its peak or if more attacks to come."

A local journalist told CNN he had seen evidence of an attack at the city's domestic airport, which is on the outskirts of the Mumbai.

IBN reported explosions at a gas station and inside a taxi on a dockside road.

Attacks were reported at the Taj and Oberoi hotels, the popular Café Leopold, and Cama Hospital, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station.

Pretty fucking horrible

I don't ever think I am going to leave the U.S. ever again. Were they like some national movement or was it Islamic fundamentalists?

Too early to say, smart money is on the latter, since Hindu extremists tend to go after domestic targets. These guys were after US and UK passports. Aah, wtf am I saying. Of course it was Islamic extremists. I bet everyone on the first page $5.

edit: turns out it was a group called the deccan mujahadeen

"You should know that your acts are not at all left unnoticed; rather we are closely keeping an eye on you and just waiting for the right time to execute your bloodshed. We are aware of your recent raids at Ansarnagar, Mograpada in Andheri and the harassment and trouble you created there for the Muslims," the group said in the email they sent to various media houses on Saturday evening.

"You threatened to murder them and your mischief went to such an extent that you even dared to abuse and insult Maulana Mahmood-ul-Hasan Qasmi and even misbehaved with the Muslim women and children there," the email said.

"If this is the degree your arrogance has reached, and if you think that by these stunts you can scare us, then let the Indian Mujahideen warn all the people of Mumbai that whatever deadly attacks Mumbaikars will face in future, their responsibility would lie with the Mumbai ATS and their guardians - Vilasrao Deshmukh and R R Patil," the email said. "You are already on our hit-list and this time very very seriously."

According to BBC:

A group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the shootings, local media say

Whats up with India this week, first this:
A TEENAGE Indian boy was thrashed, paraded through the streets with his head shaved and then thrown under a train for daring to write a love letter to a girl from a different caste.
Fifteen-year-old Manish Kumar was kidnapped by members of the rival caste on his way to school, had his head shaved and was thrown under a train as his mother begged for mercy, police in the impoverished eastern state of Bihar said.

One man has so far been arrested and a policeman suspended.

The victim's mother Lalit Devi told police she had watched "helplessly" as the wheels of the train passed over her son.

"The accused persons killed the boy for writing a love letter to the girl of the same village," superintendent of police in Kaimur district, Rajesh Kumar, said.

Police said the girl belonged to a washerman community, considered a lower caste, whereas the boy came from the slightly higher dairymen Yadav community.

Love across caste lines is often violently opposed, especially in rural northern India, and it is not uncommon for outraged families to kill to "save the family honour".

and now a terrorist attack.:(

I hope my Mother is a safe in Pakistan is able to come home asap.

India suppresses minorities and especially Muslims in Mumbai. I just hope this does not have a ripple effect across Pakistan and India.

Reactions so far..

GORDON BROWN said:
"These outrageous attacks in Mumbai will be met with a vigorous response.

I have sent a message to Prime Minister Singh that the UK stands solidly with his government as they respond, and to offer all necessary help.

Urgent action is underway to offer every possible protection to British citizens in the region."

DAVID MILIBAND said:
"Today's attacks in Mumbai which have claimed many innocent victims, remind us, yet again, of the threat we face from violent extremists.

I condemn these attacks unreservedly. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed and injured.

The UK and India will continue their joint efforts to counter the actions of terrorists."

US STATE DEPARTMENT said:
"The United States strongly condemns the terrorist attacks that have taken place in Mumbai, India.

We are monitoring the situation very closely and stand ready to support the Indian government as it deals with this horrific series of attacks.

Our sympathies go out to the families and friends of those killed and injured.

At this point, we are unaware of any American casualties."

BEN CHANG said:
"We condemn these attacks and the loss of innocent life. We continue to seek more information."

The BBC are saying local reports say troops are moving into the hotel(s)

The way the BBC are reporting on the news channel now makes it sound like there is still a hostage situation at two hotels.

Hope these idiots are captured quickly. I mean, WTF is the point of this crap?

PS: How long will it take Fox News to blame this on Obama somehow?

Never seen that many targets attacked at one time.

Can someone explain to me how this advances some cause of these terrorists? They don't seem to even have any demands. (Or is this about that disputed land between India & Pakistan?)

What is gained other than making people hate hardcore Islamists even more?

Mmm . . . actually they do. Bands of Chimpanzees will attack each other. Various other animal groups will attack other animal groups in protection of territory, resources, etc.

These are meant to be retaliatory measures. Eye for an eye as they apparently see it. I would assume they're motivation is to stop what they perceive as future indiscretions against Muslims.

They have nothing else to do except cause chaos to the world, the fuckers.

I just woke up and saw this on the front page of CNN.com. What the fuck is WRONG with people? Good God. Please lob these douchebags into space without equipment.

They'll also EAT the people they're attacking, including babies. This totally blew my mind when I saw it.

I'd recommend getting out of Pakistan . . . between their financial woes, the spill-over war from Afghanistan, the rise of militants in Pakistan, the ineffectual government . . . some people are saying that Pakistan might collapse in the near future.

Errr what? animals especially in the insect world have "war" all the time, same with a lot of mammals killing other animals they have no intention of eating.

"cant hug your children with nuclear arms"

The failed state label has been bandied about for years now. Conversely I think Zardari made some positve overtures towards India a few days ago. Economic co-operation, that sort of thing. Apart from Kashmir (and suspected ISI stirring in states like Assam) I see little in it for India.

I sure hope the government gets things under control. It is just one of those scary times since so many difficult factors are happening at the same time (a new government emerging from years of dictatorship, spill-over war from a neighboring state, the world-wide economic collapse, etc.).

But then again . . . a really good thing is that the hardcore Islamists have not proven to provide a good prosperous society really anywhere, so they'll remain a minority . . . but perhaps a troublesome one.

Karl Rove was on Fox News blaming Islamic fascism - the "biggest threat of the next century" - for the attack, immediately after the news broke when we didn't even know who caused it yet. He also linked the attacks in India to 9/11, despite not knowing who conducted them.

And of course, Cavuto didn't call him out on it.

TBH everyone knew who it was when we heard the news. It was ~90% certain who it was.

Pakistan has been on the verge of falling under the spell of a hardcore Islamic ruling party for years. My personal opinion is that Musharraf was the best thing that happened to it at that time. The economy went to shit though.

I don't think it's in the clear when it comes to Islamic parties. They're really prevalent. I mean really, really prevalent (mind you I haven't been there for a few years after I had some, er... trouble, with the authorities).

So it's pakistan islamic groups?

I still can't believe that India and Pakistan hasn't nuke the shit out of each other yet.
