I can't remember after 9/11 besides Air Defense Roles, were troops deployed in NYC or DC to secure the city (not counting National Guard)? I know it's a bit procedural, but the ways laws about the use of and the different way the Armed Forces are structured in different countries has always fascinated me a bit.

Yes. I remember driving into DC on 9/12 and there were DC National Guard posted all around the White House, the Ellipse (IIRC every 50 feet or so) and on many street corners in DC. Very sobering sight.

My heart goes out to Norway and Norwegians today. Stay strong.

Terrorists are a bunch of crazy murderous bastards. They don't think like normal people, so there's no point in trying to understand them.

Yeah your right, but it is just mindblowing everytime something like this happens :(

How long would you need to actually swim? Most people can hardly do 200m

Scandinavian waters are cold as fuck, at least here in Denmark, i guess it only gets worse the further to the north you get. And the current in some of our oceans are crazy, so a swim might be very optimistic. 2 danish sailors died last year in Norwegian waters (i think it was Norwegian coast at least), and they were only about 1 kilometer from the shore, and they were experienced svimmers/sailors and they had a professionel lifeguard with them....

I do not know how far that island is from the coast though, but it looked very far!

Fake edit: Probably beaten like an old dog!

Well there was a crazed gunmen on the island so I imagine they tried swimming away in a panic. Not the greatest plan in the world but you can't really blame them for trying, it must've been horrifying.
they could see the mainland, so it's not a big surprise that some might try it. only a half mile away.

I assume they won't make it, though.

I'm reading reports that the gunman was arrested? Any more details on him? My sister said she heard he was blonde?

Un journaliste de la télévision a décrit un homme robuste d'environ 1,90 mètres et de type européen, équipé d'un fusil d'assaut, une information qui n'a pas non plus été confirmée officiellement.

Reuters: Police say shooting and bombing linked. :(

I think it might be a neo-nazi group. This doesn't have the hallmarks of an Islamic terrorist hit, no suicide bombers, a lone gunman, it doesn't fit to an Islamic terrorist attack.
As I said, neonazis would destroy themselves with an act of this scale. And not just in Norway, but all over Europe. Far right organizations operate in a semi-public manner and feed on victimism; they need some degree of visibility after all.

Whoever did this didn't give a shit about the consecuences.

Omg at the drowning victims.

or an airstrike...I mean, based on your 30 years of observation, the propensity of those bomb blasts WOULD be airstrikes.
And if a surprise airstrike of some kind involved (bombs or missiles) my first guess would be the US.

It's about 1km, about 20 lengths in an Olympic sized swimming pool. You have to be in decent shape to do that, especially in open water with strong currents.

Yeah, I can do that (in a swimming pool). But with that pressure on you and clothes as well? No way. And you're right about currents too. So sad. :(

To successfully combat terrorism we have to understand them.

Yeah, sure. But how do you want to understand people who would not hesitate to kill children or innocent people? You would have to think like one, and its rather hard to do to be honest since they're fucking crazy.

I wish BBC and CNN would focus a bit more on the shooting than the bombing right now.

They don't have any confirmed facts on the island.

That's why we're hearing so many conflicting news from less reputable sources: they're just reporting any old nonsense they read on Twitter.

How cold is the water?

The guy on Sky News said cold enough that you would freeze to death within 2-3 minutes.

Police has confirmed that there is a bomb in the island. According to nrk.

Oh man, I hope they get everyone evacuated.

is there confirmation the Island Shooting (which does NOT sound like Al-Qaeda) and the Bombing (which sounds exactly like Al-Qaeda) are related?

No firm confirmation, but the police are saying they think it is linked.

The police spokesman has confirmed, but couldn't say on what basis.

that was posted many pages ago, still no confirmation, there isn't really confirmation for much of anything there.
It's a WHITE crime, WHITE terrorists, WHITE brainless fucks.
Waiting for confirmation...

The Oslo fjord (where this took place) is warmed by the Gulf stream. I live right next to the sea and we all go swimming regularly in the summer.

TV2 just showed footage of people in the sea, they were swimming.

shit....

Here is what I think if they are really terrorist. They found the western nation with the easiest access to get into and the most lax security and targeted it to directly strike in the hearts and minds of Europe as a whole
