Agreed. But this is Norway, they're not used to seeing any violence of this magnitude considering this is the worst attack on them since WW2. They were just totally unprepared. They would've thought the safest place to be would be a youth camp sponsored by the government on a secluded island with security...

But did they have security on the island? I haven't read anywhere that confirms or denies that. And even if there was, would they be armed? I imagine not if the basic police in Norway don't carry firearms.

But you're right, Norway is not in anyway used to or prepared for this stuff. They shouldn't have to be. It's just one of those hindsight moments. Then again, you look at America and how much we've given up for the illusion of safety. Is there a happy medium?

Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anders_Behring_Breivik

Anders Behring Breivik (born 13 February 1979) is a Norwegian citizen. He is the suspected perpetrator of the 2011 Norway attacks, although it is yet unknown if he acted alone.[1][2][3] On 22 July 2011, he allegedly approached a Labour Party youth camp on Utøya, posing as a police officer, and then opening fire on the adolescents present, reportedly killing at least 80.[4] He has also been linked with the bomb blasts which had taken place approximately two hours earlier in Oslo. He was arrested on Utøya, and is currently in police custody.

Behring studied at the Oslo Commerce School, and is described by newspaper Verdens Gang as Conservative and nationalist.[3] He is also described as a one-time freemason.[5] He expresses his sympathies for Winston Churchill and Norwegian anti-nazi World War II hero Max Manus on his alleged Facebook profile.[6] In May 2009 he founded the company Breivik Geofarm, a farm with 790 employees.[7] Norwegian media has speculated he used the farm as cover to legally obtain large amounts of artificial fertilizer and other chemicals in the manufacturing of explosives.[8]

One of the guys reporting from the protests in Syria had this tweet which I thought was insightful:

edwardedark edward dark
a Muslim blows up a building in a western city "hey lets bomb and invade Muslim countries" a white dude does it "he was probably just crazy"

Having "security" wouldnt have made a difference.

Look at freaking ford hood. A godamn army base, and still someone could walk in and murder a bunch of people.

wow that sums it up for me. do they have a death penalty in norway?

Disgusting death toll. My thoughts are with all those affected.

Assuming the motive behind the attacks was ideological, any person who would target civilians in this manner over an ideological dispute is an enemy of civilization and needs to be dealt with accordingly. Death is perfectly acceptable in absence of practical civilized alternatives, but capture is ideal. Since the child murdering psycho apparently was captured, I'll be interested to hear how he justifies his depravity.

This is not a question of cultural differences, and anyone who finds themselves tempted to frame these tragedies in that way may be assured that our culture of life is superior in every positive sense to the killers' culture of death. If the bombing or shootings turn out to be an expression of Islamic extremism, the coming days would be an excellent time for good and decent Muslims, and the organizations that represent them, to loudly and publicly condemn this anachronistic perversion of their tradition. If Islamic extremists were not involved, the coming days would be an excellent time for good and decent Muslims to join the chorus of other voices in deploring these acts of violence, which comprise in any case an assault on all free people.

3 hours. I wonder how long that felt to the people on the island, probably like eternity.

He was military personnel with a reason to be there though. One police officer asking for this guys credentials and it didn't happen. Or if he somehow managed to start killing people, at least he gets stopped before the number hits 80.

See there is problem.

Not sure what you mean, though if you're referring to it being lenient, then for a moment imagine a justice system not based on revenge and it makes more sense. The guy was in his 70s when released, and deemed harmless at that point.

He should have died in prison at the very least. It's not revenge it's punishment. Oh well I guess considering his age he has a decent chance of leaving prison alive one day.

Sorry but in one respect I don't buy this argument. We Christians love to disown when one of our own uses faith to justify murder but are quick to stereotype Muslims as all being extremists.

Time to fess up and challenge our extremist elements instead of acting like they don't exist.

A friend went to highschool with this fucktard, typical nobody, silent guy..barely remembers the guy.

How the do you prepare for this shit?

Makes me sick.

It's always those types. It's never the popular kid or the bookworm.

Thread title says 20+ dead but then another report posted here says over 80. What is the most accurate number we have right now? Over 80 is such a ludicrous number but when you consider if he was armed on a secluded island with those weapons and 500 kids, 80 seems low which is so fucked up. Too bad he isn't dead and won't be because of the Norwegian justice system.

If all that is true, he is a real life-movie villain. No more fitting name possible.

The whole thing reads like a movie, down to the cops arriving after everything is done.

unreal

Everybody with an agenda is going to blame it on Arabs/neo-Nazis/whatever initially. I personally don't care who did it and I have no goal of sparing anyone's feelings, but we just don't know right now. You probably have a 50% chance of being right anyway.

Flip a goddamn coin or something.

Not really. You might want to review the history of fascism. Murder is a hallmark of religious extremism of any stripe.

fucking pussy didn't even have the balls to go down fighting

fry this waste of shit

The guy probably wants a trial to speak his mind indirectly to the media, through his defense. This guy is a socio-political terrorist, the terrorist attack is probably just the first part of his plan: getting attention.

Okay so the bomb AND shooting killed 80 people?

Or is the bombing not big news anymore?

There's no coverage of this in Australia.

OK, regarding the questions why it took the police so long to get to the place I tried to find out where Utøya is exactly, but Google Maps is failing me (the only Utøyas i can find are clearly more than a few miles away from Oslo) Any help?

It's the island left to the marked B on this route-planner, dunno how you get out to the island tough.

At this point I think the shooting spree is whats done the most damage as the most lives were lost from that.

Well let's hope the toll is lower...but over on this side of the pond, we're hearing 80 and potentially rising.

I think he meant the age of the campers.

So sad to read this. Thoughts with Norway over here. This scum couldn't possibly get what he really deserves.
