Tetris goes DS -- ONLINE!

I'm happy, not because I care about Tetris (though my wife surely will), but because I was beginning to wonder when we'd get more wi-fi games. Other than Metroid, I hadn't heard of another confirmed wi-fi title.

Ultimate Brain games and Ultimate Card Games are both scheduled to come out before Metroid too. The GBA versions were fantastic.

Wow. This is gonna rule.

Am I the only one who hopes that they have a version of the new tetris? The one that has the huge solid blocks worth more when combined 4 smaller blocks?

Loved that version.

Tetris FTW!

This news is utterly fantastic for Nintendo. Everybody knows how to play Tetris. Everybody loves it. Along with Brain Training, this is a system seller for the adult crowd (plus both games will get released around the same time in the west).

The online addition will make it the ultimate puzzler game on the market.

And it's another game I can play in competition with my wife with one cartridge only.

I love the DS.

That game was, by all accounts, pure shit, so THQ wisely decided not to release it at all. I'm sure this new Tetris DS is a completely different game.

And what's up with all these people saying THQ has the Tetris license? Tetris is owned by Blue Planet Software (Henk Rogers's company, formerly called Bulletproof Software), and BPS decides which companies to license the series to. Do we know for sure that the licenses are exclusive? Remember that Nintendo AND Capcom released versions of Tetris on N64, and other companies released versions in Japan.

I heard elsewhere that Blue Planet Software will only license it now if it contains certain news 'rules' which they consider to be the standard. :( Being able to slide blocks when they're at the bottom, etc... hopefully it's not true.

I want to draw my own shapes as they fall!! On 2nd thought, that'd be too easy
I was thinking the same thing, but a little bit different: the bottom of the "well" keeps moving up towards the top of the screen, and you have to draw the designated piece and eliminate lines in order to keep it from reaching the top. Could be interesting at the very least.

That's one of the best photoshops ever and it probably didn't even need photoshop. Ducktales FTW.

If this is done right, GAME OF THE YEAR.

Sorry Twilight Princess, we just don't like playing as a Wolf and the fact that you're still on GC.

I'll buy 4 copies of the fucking game.

One for me.
One for me years from now.
One for me to save and cherish.
One to give to someone as a gift.

Oh god! Another system seller for the NDS with stellar sell-throughs and inhumanly long legs. You heard it here first!

I remember the good old days back then when I received the first Game Boy package for Christmas, with Tetris, that was like 15 years ago.
And like many of you, i played Tetrinet and enjoyed it a lot.
And now Nintendo announces the DS version : what more can I say ?

So does anyone reckon it will be played using the two screens for the whole level (which might be hard cause of the break in the middle), or just the one screen for playing and the other screen full of Marios/Zeldas dancing or something?

Simple! For normal controls: The action will be normal tetris on the top screen, the bottom screen will be black expect for the blinking word "pause". The bottom screen is the pause button.

For Touch control: The action happens in the bottom screen as you guide the blocks down to their best location while the top screen is black except for the blinking word "pause".

Brilliant!

Just wait until you see it. OK?

Ok that's like the third comment that you've made essentially confirming that you have played the game and its awesome. 1 of 2 things should now occur:

1) Spill the fucking beans already

2) If you are under an NDA, give us the date it lifts so we can tune in for more news then.

This is awesome news. There've been so many Tetris releases in recent years but my favourites have always been the GB-version and Tetris Attack.

Its great to know Nintendo are releasing one yet again -- and its online. Looking foreward to this immensely. If they really wanna fuck everyone up in the "you will say WOW" stakes, they could also price it in their Touch! Generations price bracket... I doubt they will, but I can always hope :D

Another 4 player DS online game. Guess 4 players is the max limit for online DS games.

More is obviously possible, but if you're doing match up, syncing more than that many probably becomes a problem... wouldn't be a problem for something with dedicated servers, so maybe if an MMO ever comes to DS, you'll see more than 4.

Both Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will have connectivity to the Pokemon series for the GBA and GameCube, and users will be able to port their pocket monsters from previous installments to the DS. Masuda also commented that he expects the games to use the DS's Wi-Fi capabilities to connect simultaneously with 16 players and that the touch-sensitive screen will be employed during gameplay.

Can't say this is written in stone, but it's some indication there can be more than 4.

If those are real

* Boo item.. probably works the same as in Mario Kart... nice idea

* "Hold" -- holding a block of your choice would possibly make things easier, but it just means games will be longer and scores potentially higher. Bit of strategy for multiplayer won't go amiss I guess.

I hope there is more than one single player mode. Or that games are customisable.

If you don't have enough money for a DS, this is the wrong hobby for you.

Nah, it's just because I'm unemployed at the moment. Once I get a job (once there start being jobs for me to get - one of the main jobs newspapers didn't publish an issue for the last 3 weeks) I shouldn't have any trouble getting one.

The DS makes my wallet cry. It makes me cry too, actually, but they're tears of joy.

Online Pokemon, Tales, SMB, Zelda, FFIII, Peach, Children of Mana, online Bomberman, Pokemon Ranger, online Metroid, Pokemon Trozei, ASH, Mario Basketball, Phoenix Wright 2, and now Tetris... the gaming goodness just never ends. And that's not counting the GBA games still coming up: FF5-6, Mother 3, ToP, Drill Dozer, Yggdra Union...

so that's basically tetrinet by the looks of the right screen. FUCK YES.

I'm worried about such a long queue of blocks. Part of the fun was hoping the next block would be the one you need, this one has 6 in advance. I think it'll take out some of the desparation in the faster levels. Maybe that's customizable.

Also it would be neat if there was a way to alter the width of the playing field, so the number of squares needed to make a line are increased or decreased.

I'd also expect some items that'll mess up your queue, and thus screw up your strategy, which will be pretty cool.
