Tetris goes DS -- ONLINE!

For some reason I see this coming from Nintendo.

" We have to delay Metroid Prime:Hunters, to make it better BUT theres Tetris DS!"

whatever, they can delay Metroid till winter if they add VoIP

VoIP will never happen in a DS game unless it's in a chat room before or inbetween games.

Personally I don't mind if MP:H gets pushed back. Whatever it takes to make it a killer-ap.

Why not? Socom on psp can do it... And if you say for safety or whatever, rate the game T and they can do it... i think

Just because they can doesn't mean they will. If Nintendo's really adamant about the safety thing, then it isn't a "rating" thing, it's a "making family friendly/safe products" thing. It seems to me that Nintendo just doesn't want to deal with the possible implications of VoIP or chat ...and I can understand that approach.

I'm not getting excited until I know for sure it's nintendo making this and I see some screenshots. Too many years of half assed tetris games :(

It's been mentioned here a bit that apparently it takes a fair bit of processing power to do the voip thing, not sure if that's accurate at all. Nintendo really show their newbness at online though, so maybe they just haven't made it work right yet.

Wi-Fi doesnt mean online. Wi-Fi Connection does. 16 online is way to good to be true. i only wish.

Yeah yeah, my fault. I usually correct people who do what I did on other forums... Stupid mistake by me. I had read on GAF that it'd have 16 online, and I just searched the net for anything to confirm it. I should have paid better attention, sorry for that!

I don't see VoIP in any Nintendo game for a while. Especially after the XBOX live sex abuse thing. If something like that happened on a DS game... Can you imagine all the "Touching is good" jokes that will rampage through GAF?

Because it eats up the CPU time. PSP doesn't lose as much in the graphics department as the DS will do if the incorporate it. I think that's the biggest issue.

Here are the first two screen shots.

There you go. At least for half of your inquiry.

Will this have Tetrinet-like items? It practically begs for it. And - LOBBY PLEASE. Don't limit our options.

Well, the DS has its two processors. Only one screen would have to lose out on processing power. Most games only have 1 screen that is graphically intensive anyway. One processor could control the main action screen while the other could hand the other screen/VoIP. Though that's if Nintendo would do it. We know VoIP is possible because of the demos they had at E3 (i think it was at E3), but in game is yet to be seen. We gotta wait.

Do you guys really play with portables outside of the apartment? Why not just get tetrinet for free and play that?

I think it's the best DS idea yet, but in my case it's also flawed.

Well one of those processors is basically a GBA and I don't see how that one will pull it of.
Yes Nintendo has shown that they can do VoIP but that wasn't in a game. That's why I said that I don't think we will actually have it in the main game but maybe in a chat between games (only using the arm7 processor for graphics).

Are those screens for real? Presentation looks kinda cheap..like something tacked together by a fan...I was expecting something more stylish and polished. But as long as you can remove those backgrounds and "skins", it'll be good and functional enough I'm sure.

Does Tetrinet have Mario and Zelda themed levels? I DIDN'T THINK SO.

Actually...the first TetriNET theme I downloaded was a Mario theme. It's a skinnable application so you can change the graphics and music.

True, it looks 3rd Partyish. THQish. It has no solid, black borders and is quite colorful. Not really stylish. But okay.

Someone said they are on Nintendos Press Site tho.

I wouldn't call the arm7 "basically a GBA processor", it's still quite a bit stronger... but even still, how much does VoIP require? I'm not disagreeing with you that they would probably use it in a lobby system, rather than in game. I just don't think it's impossible for them to use it in game with the arm7. Though I do not know requirements for VoIP.

I think Nintendo Software Technology is doing it.

Great, 1080° Avalanche was my sisters' favorite game this generation, and I like it too.

NST seems to become better from game to game. With MP: Hunters and Tetris DS they will really prove what they're capable of.

I think the screens with the Tetris...board are fine. Nice and clear, sharp, style seems fine.

The backgrounds on the other half of the screens on the other hand...well it doesn't matter much with the 10 players as you can't see it, but I don't think much of the goomba screen. Nor the grey lines surrounding that bit.

It doesn't matter though, the bit I care about is good. Just hope the music is too.

It is the same processor although it has twice the clockspeed (33MHz I think). I guess Nintendo might be able to pull it through if they perhaps lessen the quality of the speach, I just doubt it. If they do pull it off though I couldn't be happier, I'm just not setting myself up for disappointments :)

The Arm7 is 2x the speed of the one in GBA, and customized. The Arm9 is more powerful.

I heavily doubt that DSpeak uses both processors, only for voice. Of course, including VoIP in a normal game would be difficult, but for Tetris-like games, only one processor can probably do the job easily, so the second one could be used for VoIP.

But I don't think we'll see VoIP, for non-techncal reasons.

Man, I was excited, but those screens are fucking uuuuuuuuugly.

True. My enthusiasm dropt big time. I'm mean Tetris is allready pretty simple, the least they could do is put some effort into the presentation but that.... I really thought that was a Joke Photoshop at first (especially the Backround on the Mario Screen) but they really are on the Press Site. Very, very underwhelming.

I think it looks great. :) Better than I expected!

What do you think the Mario Brothers screen means though? Play through Mario Brothers by playing Tetris?

I just blew my load :D Seriously but, Feb 20th for Europe, that is sweet, I'm gonna bust out my gameboy colour and get practicing.

yeah? I mean, they are portables. That seems to indicate a level of portability, you know?

....And that means you have to play them outside right? Yeah, nice use of logic there...

For what its worth, PlanetGameCube is claiming that this is an internally developed title, though they do not know which Nintendo studio is making it.

So... uh, when exactly did THQ lose the Tetris license?

I don't believe THQ ever owned the license.

I'm pretty sure The Tetris Company / Blue Planet Software (Henk Rogers and Alexey Pajitnov) owns the U.S. license, and they sublicense it out to other publishers.

Looking at the backgrounds, it looks like shit will be constantly flying everywhere, or moving around. If the backgrounds were static it'd look like shit, but if it's always moving, it'll look pretty good. Lumines has a constantly changing background, doesn't it?

Wait.. what? This hits europe first?

So how much did the last major handheld tetris sell?
This is going to be the spiritual successor to the one that sold like more copies than any other games combined ever did. At least that's what I think ninty is banking on.

They are likely going to bundle it.

I play my DS at home, between classes at college, on car/plane trips when visiting relatives, etc. So yes.

From Nintendo?

Tetris (GB) 30.260.000
Tetris DX (GBC) 1.880.000

Sweet. Thanks. I know Tetris was out for much longer, but I would have thought Tetris Ds would have sold a bit more.
