Tetris goes DS -- ONLINE!

Just thought of something.
Each of the six modes of play features a theme based on a classic Nintendo game, such as Super Mario Bros.®, The Legend of Zelda® or Metroid®.
At first I was taking this to mean that there would be one theme per mode, and therefore six franchises would be incorporated. Then I thought about it some more and it occurred to me that if they were going to use any of their other major franchises (Pokemon, Donkey Kong, etc.), they would have listed them to generate more hype.
So now I'm guessing there'll be two SMB modes, two Zelda modes, and two Metroid modes. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

Sweet. Thanks. I know Tetris was out for much longer, but I would have thought Tetris D[X] would have sold a bit more.

Tetris was a phenomenon in the late 80s, and was a pack-in title with the GameBoy in the US... You really can't compare the two in terms of sales. DX still did remarkably well, though.

There will probably be more than those three.

.. though, I hope that the themes will evolve as you progress. So you won't be limited to just 6 different themes.

Hm, If you look at the multiplayer Tetris DS screen, Player Number "2" Has the head of Balloon Fighter (?) instead of the "2". So there are maybe more franchises in, would be cool.

I am ready for some hot tetris action. Clicky below for some humourous tetris ownage.

Round 1
Round 2

Hah, they shoudl totally televise game tournaments more (I know that wasn't a tournament...well, it didn't seem like one). Just watching the guy's side I was going "No don't...what are you...no don't put it there! Nooooo stop going for single lines! I'LL KILL YOU!"

Ok, the last bit didn't happen.

....And that means you have to play them outside right? Yeah, nice use of logic there...
your logic was flawed first by implying that no one ever played their portables outside of their apartment. and I didn't say you had to play them outside, just that it was possible.

I play my DS at home, between classes at college, on car/plane trips when visiting relatives, etc. So yes.
see? people do play their portables outside their apartment. what was your original argument, anyway?

If i recall. Blue Planet doesn't develop games, don't they just control the licensing of the Tetris license.

For example. Blue Planet didn't develop The Next Tetris, H20 did.

Um, who cares?
As long as it has 4 player, classic multiplayer (GB rules) online, I'll buy it.

I don't even care if it's in color.

I DON'T want more than one next piece visible.
I want the same scoring mechanics.
I want the same speed.
I want the same piece distributions.

Hell, I even want the controls to be limiting like they were in the GB version

edit - had to submit and step away since I'm at work.
What I mean byu all of that is that I want a CLASSIC mode - both single player and 2,3 or 4 players online, to be as close to the GB version as possible.

Tetris DX was good, but too easy - the controls were more responsive, enabling people to score way more than is possible in the original GB version.

Um...who cares if you can score higher? The high scores table simply adjusts.

Tetris DX was my favourite version -the ability to save was so important, and made me skip Tetris World for Advance.

Something I'd like to see is a frantic touch screen version (which is what I was hoping they were doing for the other never released Tetris DS), where they throw like 6 pieces at once, and you use the stylus to drag and drop them into place. That would've been pretty cool, just a s a diversion. Of course, they need to have the high score table reflect how many 'advance' pieces you used while achieving that score, so people can tell whther you got it by seeing 1, 6, or even no pieces in advance.

Been waiting for a new Tetris, and to have it published by Nintendo is a bonus...and having it Nintendo themed, hopefully complete with remix Nintendo music is just too good to be true (judging by the music in Metroid Pinball).

Who wants to bet that the original tetris (complete with black and white) will be an unlockable feature?

oh fuk, im never going to get my wife off of the DS

I already have to leave the thing over at my girl's place because I can't get her off of Metroid Pinball. I'm going to have to scrape together to get another DS, a blue one, for myself just so I can play Castelvania.

This may have been posted already, but it looks like you can pick your character, i.e. having the original Mario, Mario from SMB3, and the dude from Balloon Fight (I think?) for the second player there. This is probably what that one patent that let you select classic characters was referring to.

All this talk of Tetris DS being online reminds me of the good ol' days playing Tetrinet with my buddies. Those were some good times!

I like how DS games come out of nowhere. They could announce the release of Fzero or Zelda DS in April, that would even not surprise me :)

The easy development path Nintendo has taken allows us to get a steady flow of low-priced games. Everyone can afford these games, play it with their relatives or online with other gamers.

Nintendo's recent strategy is a business school case.

Nintendo should make a Tetris DS/NDS bundle. It'd fly off the shelves. Be nice for the summer months.

Nintendo and money always seems to find itself in the same sentence. They'll be fine.

Five pages? I'll guess that at least 30% of this topic is people bitching about Nintendo?

Anyway...this is cool news, IMO. Make it a budget release (maybe £15 in Britain) and I'll buy it. One thing that annoys me though is Nintendo having to stick Mario and friends in every single game. This is Tetris...it has its own identity and its own legacy. It doesn't need Nintendo's IPs getting stamped all over it

BPS used to have a Japanese studio (called Bullet Proof Software), though I'm not sure what happened to it. They developed Famicom games like Super Black Onyx, Hatris and Pipe Dream. They even made Tetris 2 and Yoshi's Cookie for Nintendo actually.

I don't think it will be budget. It has WiFi and 10 Player Singlecard Multiplayer.
Oh and the Nintendo characters were in Tetris NES as well. So...

Are you sure that Blue Planet and Bullet Proof Software are the same company? Oh and Bullet Proof Software didn't develop Yoshi's Cookie for NES/GB. EAD did. Bullet Proof Software did the Super Nintendo version though. So Nintendo owns the IP.

Pretty sure, they were at least founded by the same guy, Henk Rogers.

And are you sure you're not thinking of Yoshi no Tamago NES/GB, which was developed by Game Freak iirc? Everything I've seen credits all versions of Yoshi's Cookie to BPS? They published the SFC version themselves though... they were pretty close with Nintendo actually.

Jarrod i got the credits for the GB/NES Yoshi's Cookie. EAD (Old R&D1).

Yoshi's Egg is by Satoshi Tajiri and GameFreak for Nintendo Co., Ltd.
Okay... I guess BPS just handled the SFC release then? They also did SFC Tetris 2/Flash I'm guessing, while RD1 handled the FC/GB releases?

Bullet Proof Software predates Blue Planet Software though, Black Onyx being their first real big hit in the early 1980s. It was basically the first JRPG, even though it was co-coded by a westerner (Henk Rogers). Henk formed BPS to make the game, then went on to "discover" Tetris. He was also good friends with Yamauchi iirc, which likely led to the Nintendo/BPS cross licesning of Tetris and various co-production deals. he formed Blue Planet Software in the mid 1990s iirc, to handle Tetris licensing and development.

Blue Planet Software and Bullet Proof Software probably aren't related directly then except by their founder. Both are kaput now anyway, Henk heads Jamdat these days iirc and still handles Tetris licensing.

This is great for all the tetris fans out there. The WiFi capability is going to rock.

However, I'm more looking forward to seeing F-Zero and Waverace online. :)

Korobeiniki, motherfucker, do you have it?

Seriously, I don't understand how any company can release a Tetris game without this awesome song... so please, Nintendo, don't make me e-petition you.

Some asshole on Digg linked to my two Tetris DS pics and killed my Photobucket account for this month. :(
