Texas Showdown Championships 2012 | Fighting game tournament | April 6-8

Easily the worst, if only from a stream monster perspective.

Even if they only streamed grand finals, at this point I give so little of a shit I'm not even willing to watch the archive for just those. That's how bad it is IMO.
As someone who was there, everything was extremely anti-hype. I got there around 4pm and MK was on stream for far too long. Regardless of the quality of the game itself, it's so boring to watch. Then SCV bumps Marvel on stream and the hype just died in the room. Marvel and AE were off to the side and got way more of a crowd than SCV got the whole 3+ hrs it was on stream.

It was just a poorly run tournament. That's from a scrub perspective (me), the stream monsters perspective, and everyone else that was there knew it was not good. If I didn't know any better, I'd never want to go to another tournament again.

Planet Zero is not helping its reputation.

A ton of the stream yesterday too just ran casuals for hours :/

EVO basically had a application process that let any tournament around the country apply to get EVO seeding points.

My guess is maybe not many or any other TX tournament applied that's probably why this one ended up winning the seed points for this region. Plus TX Showdown has been around for a very long time. I guess some seniority points probably didn't hurt.

PZ buys their way into everything

Haha. I showed up thinking GF would be on today and they aren't streaming it?

The award for biggest joke tournament goes to these guys.

I just hope coming out of this that people don't associate Texas soley with Planet-Zero :/ All the other major cities have put on extremely well ran regionals. Speaking on behalf with dallas with have two tournament promotions that have both run 150+ man tourneys smooth as butter.

I'm trying to get either of those promotions on as a road to evo major but it's really hard to get the attention of the evo crew when they're busy mindlessly giving the spot away to a historical fuck up, and then wondering why tx can't get it right. It's a very frustrating experience.

I'm really trying to figure out how it even happened in the first place when PZ has been listed in the years-old "Tournament venues to avoid" thread since its inception.

Hard to get worse than Apex, but Texas just had to be a bigger failure.

Edit: damn, should have made some sort of "everything's bigger in texas" joke.

Somebody posted this on the stream chat. I wonder where did this joke come from.

Damn that's... ice cold.

From an outsider's perspective, none of this makes sense unless large amounts of money are being slipped under the table. Why would they even want to associate anymore with PZ?

It disappoints me to hear all this negativity towards TSC. At one point, Texas Showdown was a respectable major. Now it's just embarassing. I stopped by the finals room which was in very large room, but there was only a small crowd of 20 or so watching. A regular animecon tournament gets more hype than this.

PZ pretty much put me into retirement from fighting games. Their reputation is so bad, I just don't see how they can make TSC successful again. They really need to separate the tourney from the animecon for one.

Wait a minute that can't be real... I thought that was a joke.

THEY ACTUALLY PLAYED A POOL OF MK IN A BATHROOM???

How is this even... ethical? Or even legal? I refuse to believe this is true.

When Texas Showdown was announced I am pretty sure there was no mention of Planet Zero involvement with it.

Not directly. P-Zero/Anime Matsuri was their main sponsor, and the person running TS, while having a history with previous TS's, is more recently a lead figure for PZ.

All I want is for the general public to not associate Texas soley with P-Zero. There are a lot of great tournament promotions in the state, we just need the Cannon's to give us a shot at a Road to Evo spot.

get some go again
seems like the guys who run evo only care about evo and don't really care what tournament they hand over the points to.

Is this the worst tournament of the year? There doesn't seem to be any hype here at all...

Yes. Canceling the stream from the start would have been a major improvement, that's how bad it was.

They only care if a porn company is involved in some way because a private company sponsoring a few players with more detrimental to the community than what PZ has been doing for years.

It's generally a good thing that Evo/SRK want to promote more and more events without getting too involved in how things are run on the ground level.

They can't all be winners if you do that, though.

there should still be some standards put into place on what is not acceptable. in the end evo is the one who's brand is hurt by being associated with a shitty tournament.

Well, at least this proves that the US can muck up majors!

It's not easy to run these things, but it does sound like it was the typical "crap venue x tournament (dis)organizers" problem that you get occasionally.

The worst part out of all this is that there are some very good players in Texas and a lot of good places for tournaments/locals. I have been a resident of Austin, Texas for years and during my time playing Tekken 5 competitively I have been to quite a few organized tournaments. PZ is solely responsible for this but this is going to reflect badly on the entire scene there.

In Marvel there was a lot of interesting play that went down and some legit solid matches. There was a MODOK anchor player at top 4 who was utilizing some sick set ups with the Balloon Bomb assist. Of course we didn't get to see that, this is just what I heard but this is the sort of thing that changes meta games and now no one knows about it.

The best thing that happened at this tournament was that they concluded Marvel a day early. The other games should've been finished a day early too, there is no point in playing 2 matches for each game in a day. Complete waste of time and money for everyone involved.

I hope James Chen puts them on blast on Tuesday. Flies out and gets to commentate for a couple hours before being yanked for the rest of the weekend for some pretty bad commentary. I would have loved to hear some Ross/Chen for AE top 16 at least.

Yep, this is why I was excited for this. Always nice to see what tech people are brewing in different corners of the country. On the AE side I really wanted to see some FourWude and Jewelman, the latter of which has a pretty flashy honda as a lot of you know.

Wait, James Chen is there? What the fuck, I didn't even know. What the hell are they doing, holy shit.

I'm really curious if there were pools really played in the restroom. I mean there were casual/pool stations pretty close to it(pool being 4 steps away, casual 2 steps). but that would be really fucked up.

Looking around online there seem to be conflicting reports, some people are saying it definitely happened, some saying it didn't, and some saying that they were playing right outside the doors. If it actually happened...oh man.

Good thing Power Up is next weekend and hopefully they learned from last year and put on a great show.

Power Up so soon? Damn.. Feels like the last one was only a short time ago.

Also the MK situation is really fucked up if true :/

I guess we need to crown a new King of Poverty.

Saw those matches first hand. That dude was sick. That and so many other great matches were never on stream.

Ugh.
