All of the original wallpapers should still be in your Kindle:\linkss\backups\600x800 folder. If not, let me know and I will re-upload them for you.

Thanks a lot, I was able to find it and pull the two or three that I liked.

P.S. Could someone with a windows machine and photoshop convert the Spanish coat of arms? Ala Spanish coat of arms or something similar? :D

Worked like a charm -- thanks for the thread; wouldn't have known otherwise.

I'm having a weird issue though. The custom screensavers appear, but I can see faded text of the last page I was reading on under the image -- has anyone else run into this issue?

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Alt+g from the home screen should clear any ghosting.

Tried, didn't work - some images (mostly those with lighter backgrounds) show a faint image of the last page I was reading beforehand.

Since it only occurs on some images, I've removed them.

Thanks for the help - I'm enjoying the images that work :)

Hi Guys!

I've been lurking around here using the hacks, so I decided I should try and contribute something, even if it is small. Basically, I have a bunch of Kindle formatted screensavers that I downloaded from the internet, but I wanted to make them look more authentic, so I decided to stamp each one with a "Slide and release the power switch to wake" message to each one.

However, doing this manually would be a tedious task, so I created an action in Photoshop to do so. To start, download the Kindle Stamp.zip file in the attachments section of this post. Once you extract it, you will find two files: stamp.png (self-explanatory file name) and Kindle Stamp.atn (A Photoshop Action File). Open Photoshop and open the Actions window if it is not already open (Window -> Actions). Then, in the top right corner of the Actions Window, click the menu icon to open a menu. Click the Load Actions option and navigate to the Kindle Stamp.atn file that you extracted.

Now that you've loaded the actions file, you need to load the stamp. First, open the stamp.png file in Photoshop. Then, select all (Ctrl+A) and copy it (Ctrl+C). Once you do that, you are ready to batch stamp your screensavers.

I'm using Photoshop CS5, so it might be different on your computer, but when you open the Batch Processor (File -> Automate -> Batch), select the action you should have just imported and the folder containing all of the screensavers. Then, choose a folder where you want to save the stamped screensavers, and if all goes well, you should have a nice set of authentic looking images.

Great thread OP! And thanks for the links to jailbreaking. I will definitely spice up my Kindle with a couple of nice pics from this thread.

Would someone be so kind as to transform these in to Kindle ready images?

Or if anyone has a detailed guide that would be great. :)

Hey guys, I am completely new to jailbreaking/hacking/etc. I really want some of these wallpapers on my new Kindle. What are the risks involved in doing this? Can it be undone easily? Is it worth doing just for these cool pictures?

Like I said...I am pretty clueless with this stuff, but intrigued. Thanks for any help. I have a Kindle 3G if that helps...

EDIT: I know there are websites I can search for to get more info, but I would like to hear personal opinions from GAF.

Someone over on the something awful forums converted almost 250 pictures of Gustav Dore for use with the kindle:

He also made them with and without the "Slide to release" line. I use them and they look really awesome.

Just added these to my kindle, and they are fucking amazing. The most detailed pictures always impress me the most, and Gustave Dore art is insane with detail. Thank you. :)

No problem.

I am having issues with screensavers and am hoping someone here can help. I've gotten the hack running fine, and the 5 or 6 screensavers I put in there initially show up just fine, but now when I try to add any more, they don't show up on the device. The files remain in the proper folder after I disconnect the device, and I've made sure that they are the right dimensions and 8bit/grayscale, but when I try cycling through the screensavers on the device itself, only my old ones appear. Any advice?

Should I just reinstall the hack??

You have to restart the Kindle to see the new screensavers (from the Settings menu, not via the switch).

D'oh! Now I feel silly for not trying that. Thank you. I had assumed that the hard reboot was only necessary after the initial hack installation.

Here's a few more I whipped up:

You guys should really convert those pictures to 16 colors, the color scaling on the Kindle leaves a lot to be desired.

You need to restart your kindle every time, which is annoying.
Personally, I just play around with a picture folder to make sure it looks fine on the Kindle, as the reboot take quite a while.

Too bad I did them anyways.
Good work. I tried, but my versions came out crappy. They look terrible when going from RGB to indexed 16 shades, so I went RGB to grayscale to indexed and they still looked awful.

Here's how I made the changes, in case anyone wants to make their own.

Using GIMP:

Image > Scale Image > 600 x 800
Colors > Desaturate > Lightness, Luminosity, or Average, depending on which one looked best.
File > Save As > .png file.
Done!

Some of these work really well as phone (android) wallpapers.

Not too busy with colours etc which means it is easy to see sll your widgets

Just got my Kindle! I love it! After having seen the screensavers now, I can understand your wish for custom ones. So I just copied a couple from this thread and will jailbreak my Kindle before too long.

Anyway, I really only wanted to say thank you for the screensavers! Great job, all of you.

Subbed. This is awesome. Forgive me if i'm blind and have missed a post, but it doesn't seem like this has been confirmed to work on the paperwhite? (not the new new one)

Other than that, these images are pretty sweet.

That is quite the bump.

I've been lazy lately so I haven't tried the jailbreak on the paperwhite yet but I'm sure it works right?
