WHAT IS THE BANNER SAGA 2?

The Banner Saga 2 is an epic role-playing game, the second episode of a planned Viking Legend inspired trilogy and the sequel to the award winning and BAFTA nominated The Banner Saga. It continues your journey soon after the climactic events of The Banner Saga. The choices you made in the first game will affect who is alive and who is dead in this exciting sequel. As the world continues to crumble around you, only one bastion of hope remains, but getting there will require strong leadership, hard sacrifices, influencing new heroes, and, as always, sound strategy in combat.

FEATURES

• The epic Viking saga continues on – beautifully 2D hand drawn combat sequences and animations are further enhanced with special effects, once again accompanied by an evocative score from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory

• Player choice that continues to drive your narrative – your story continues based on choices made in the first game as well as hard choices you have to make in this one.

• New Characters and a New Race – continue your epic journey interacting with new characters and a new race, the Horseborn.

• Improved Strategic combat with consequences – improved, more strategic battle boards enhance combat and permanent loss of characters will still weigh heavy on your mind long after the battle is over.

• The journey is as important as battle – your role in building and managing your caravan as you travel the vast landscape is critical to not only your own survival but the survival of an entire civilization.

6 bucks for Wintory goodness? I'm in.

I am seriously amazed that Stoic has managed to make such a pretty and impressive games for such a small amount of money.

And all the reviews stating that they've built on top of the first game and improved it further is the cherry on top. I've already installed but I'm drained for the night. Only gathered some strength to put up an OT. This game and developer need some extra exposure. Hope that people that enjoyed the first one jump here again. And new people buy the first and play it before this one.

Does somebody have a Banner Saga 1 save file with these things?

-Alette alive
-Crazy Ekkill in the group
-I wouldn't mind if Hogun-Mogun are also in

I don't really care on the other possibilities, but I'm really missing the second thing when you select the first when creating a game in BS2. I'm really thinking on replaying the first game just for this XD

Thanks so much for doing an OT, Corto! I played BS1 a few months after the game came out, and found the original OT to be really useful, especially for the final boss. I think BS1 is on sale via Steam at the moment, so hopefully some new people jump in.

Yeah Corto, thanks for doing the OT with lots of information and links. I wonder why this game doesn't get as much attention.

- The art design is jaw-droppingly good
- the setting is unique and interesting
- SRPG gameplay and conversation trees are cool
- Music is godlike work by the amazing Wintory.

I'm serious, this is a really impressive product no matter how you slice it. This thread should be filled with posts already.

I've not played 2, but The Banner Saga is one of my favorite games. I'm not a fan of tactical RPG, so I can not speak to how it compares to other games with a similar combat system.

The reason why the game is so dear to me is due to its absolutely astonishing atmosphere. There are games with great soundtracks. There are games with lively animations. There are games with a great artstyle. There are games with a gripping story. But rarely do so many things come together with relatively few resources.
I didn't know who Eyewind Earle, but his art is absolutely incredible. What a legend, and what a legacy to carry on from. I've not seen rotorscoping done in a lot of games, and neither the Don Bluth style. The story is not voice acted most of the time, and normally that is a deal breaker for me. The newer Zelda were impossible for me to be captured by the game, but not in this one.
The Banner Saga is absolutely incredible. I love the setting, love the music. It is ambigious enough to leave pieces of the puzzle blank for you to fill out. Like a good book or a Fumito Ueda game that doesn't give you all the clues.
Please play the Banner Saga. Even if you're like me, and would rather not play game with a combat system like this.

Oh my god that final boss! The nightmares. I have to be honest, I had to lower the difficulty just to see the end. And I'm glad I did. Fantastic end for the game. But facing the Bellower with my team and their state at that point was like trying to hammer a nail on a wall with my head.

Played for a few minutes earlier. Looks I lost my save. I figure I'll just end up using new party members anyway so it's not a big deal. You can pick
which protagonist survived
when you start the game.

Crap looks like I lost my BS1 save or something, I want to load it for BS2 :(

It seems like cloud saves were added some time after the initial release. Originally the save was in appdata.

Wow I lost my save as well. Why would they put it in Appdata\Roaming? That's like the least expected savegame location when you have to do a backup or use SaveManager.

Maybe I'll wait with playing this one until I can do a fresh playthrough of BS1 and then jump right into BS2

I found my original saves on my macbook but TBS2 doesn't recognize them. Maybe reinstalling The Banner Saga and load the last save would upload those to the cloud? Will try tomorrow.

I didn't think Banner Saga had cloud saves? You might have to transfer the save manually. A quick google search tells you where they are stored.

I think there is supposed to be a game state simulator in this, you don't need a save.

Isn't it only a superficial choice simulator? I.e. that it only includes the major choices and not the smaller ones?

It didn't have cloud saves at release, it was only patched in later. Some of us who backed the game or bought it at release didn't have the Cloud feature for our playthroughs.

So excited for this game, loved the first one and I'm gearing up for one last playthrough before I get to the sequel. If anyone wants a good deal on the first one, HumbleBundle has it for 50% off right now

Weird question for those have played it/are playing it. Is there a "Previously on The Banner Saga" style recap of events from the first game? I remember really enjoying the first one, but I don't recall many plot specifics from it.

Yes there is! There's a "Watch Recap" button on the opening game menu. Haven't tried it yet.

edit: Now I need to go to sleep. Can't wait to start playing it tomorrow with more time.

Yeah I'm in that boat, the comp I beat everything on took a shit. I am currently trying for a perfect play through right now to carry forward.

Guess I erased my save when I deleted the game after I beat it.

Oh well, I really don't feel like going back to BS1 even though it was so good. I'll just play the second.

Choice option from BS1/early BS2:
It looks like the only choice that carries over is the final one, to see who shot the arrow? Then I don't mind so much.

The surviving characters you've recruited from the first game carry over as well. Some of them impact choices in the few hours that I've played so far.

I admit I wasn't a huge fan of the first one and found a good deal of things that bothered me a bit. So happy to review this one and see so many little changes for the better.

I have a save with all 3 of these if you want it still, PM me.

As well as the fates of any minor characters you kept alive that had a chance to die in the first game, which was a decent amount of people. Of course there might be some people restored to life in the default saves for all I know.

Going to buy it full price because the first was incredible but probably won't have time to play it for a while thanks to my backlog :(

So many events compared with the first. I'm amazed with my ability to fuck up things in the most unexpected ways. Love the roleplaying of these games.

PM sent :). Thanks!

Loved the first game, really looking forward to this one. Kicking myself for not backing the first game at a higher level since the $50 and up people get this for free. Still, though, I hope this game does great because Stoic are a group of great people. For all the crap that Kickstarter gets, the risk is worth it for shining examples like what Stoic has done: great games made in a reasonable frame of development time with a reasonable budget.

I finally got to spend some time with BS2, and I've been incredibly pleased with it thus far. (I'm also trying to drag it out as long as possible, but we'll see how that goes!) Random babbling:

It's wonderful to see the old cast returning, along with some engaging new additions. The new character designs are just gorgeous, and packed with detail and personality. (Folka is great!) With both the characters and the plot, it feels like the world is naturally unfolding for the player, and none of it feels forced. I'm pleasantly surprised that characters that could have died in BS1 still have had relevance in the plot, especially turning some moments in the player's favour. I'm curious to see what happens in playthroughs when they're dead. It's great to see new dynamics with old characters who haven't really interacted on screen, especially Iver and Hakon. Juno continues to be intriguing, and I'm extremely curious where the subplot with her and Bolverk will go. I went with Rook for my first playthrough, as that was my fuck-up choice back in BS1. That being said, I can see how Alette would be the more compelling option, and I'm really looking forward to doing a playthrough with her.

Of course, I've already fucked up a bunch of decisions. Ah, that unique Banner Saga pain of trying to choose between what will fuck up your poor caravan the least. I'm convinced those adventuring Oregon Trail had it easier. At least there isn't dysentery and dredge, I suppose.

Austin Wintory's score is just as impeccable as always, and has more of a rousing momentum than the first game. BS1's score often felt like it was in mourning, whereas BS2 is a grim march. The travel music of BS2 has a stronger marching beat than the first game, but that doesn't stop it from being incredibly ominous at times. The battle music itself manages to raise the tension even higher than the first game. There is also some beautiful music sung in combat, which adds some great variety.

BS2 manages to top its predecessor in the cinematic department, both in cutscenes and in gameplay. There's always a lot of interesting things to see dragging the FOV around the battlefield - a heart wrenching addition was
seeing young dredge.
It's the little attention to detail and situational storytelling that makes the world more engaging. One of my favourite things to do in BS1 was to play spot Ubin in the background of battlefields, as he was always up to something interesting.

There's been some great integration of your choices into gameplay that directly effects the battlefield, which wasn't something the first game did quite as much. I'm also really enjoying the non-breakable/breakable hazards on the battlefield, and it creates great possibilities for slowing down enemies. It offers up some fun opportunities for spear warriors in particular. Of course, while you're trying to get through breakable hazards and the archers/spear warriors are whittling away at your armour, it certainly slows you down and raises the stakes.

There are new characters and classes, and there is a lot of variety to them. Two classes thus far specialise in buffs for the rest of your team, and one of the characters in particular is extremely creative, and is such a joy to use. (Stoic went to the trouble of recording unique VO for him, he's so great.) I'm still not very good at using them yet, but with a huge cast of characters and many upgrading opportunities, there's suddenly an incredible amount of freedom that wasn't there in BS1.

I'm overwhelmed by the second specialities, and kinda paranoid about upgrading people in case my ol' reliables are taken out to pasture. (It already happened once, I reloaded a game, I am a wuss.) They are fantastic additions, though. For example, Iver is able to get the Tempest ability or Forge Ahead. The new specific sub skills have a lot of diversity, too, ie. specific armour/armour break/willpower buffing abilities.

The different win conditions in battle are refreshing, too. There are some new enemies that have horrifying possibilities. I wasn't expecting the training tent to have a bit more value - challenges with specific objective markers were fun, and result in a solid amount of Renown.

My only complaints thus far are that the tutorials are still mandatory, and that the time between save points change between sporadic and constant. I went a good twenty minutes between one plot point to another, and the game hadn't made another save point in the meantime - I stupidly assumed that it had.

BS2 has absolutely exceeded my expectations thus far, and I can't wait to get back into it. Stoic's done an incredible job, and BS2 is such a gorgeous, atmospheric and tension-filled game. It's not an easy feat to hold tension across one game, let alone two, but Stoic keeps the engagement up.

ETA: I had no idea there were going to be vinyl copies of the BS1 and BS2 soundtracks. The covers are incredible!

I will definitely play this one day, as I loved the original.
Not now though, as the time frame is so full of other games.

I was able to salvage my save file!!!! Yayyy

I'll post here how I did it as it could be useful for someone else. My save files on my Macbook were at Library>Application Support>TheBannerSaga>Local Store. My last save was right before the final battle so I installed The Banner Saga again and replayed the final battle again. Stoic must have tweaked that battle a lot because I was able to finish it on my second try. After completing the dialogue and cutscene after the final battle I quitted the game and Steam synced the save file to the cloud. After that The Banner Saga 2 was able to detect my save file automagically. I am now truly continuing my The Banner Saga adventure, for better and for worse my choices were migrated and I'm now 1 hour in TBS2.

One thing that I immediately enjoyed. The mouse drag to pan the view of the board/battle ground. A god send!

Game was great. Clocked in at 9 hours. Cliff Hanger ending, can't wait for Banner Saga 3 in 2 years.

Soundtrack was incredible. Art Direction was stunning, and choices were fun.
The game suffers from Two Towers Syndrome. Its caught between a predecessor and a sequel, so it doesn't get to have a proper continuation.
The game is so grand and deserves a big vision. It would be a dream come true if the game became a big success and they would go back and add voice acting and more motion cinematics and unique rotorscope animations to the rooster.
Because the game is rough. And the game is very much the same. This is a game to play if you're invested in the story of the first game. There is a recap but the game just throws the characters at you, and literally picks up right where TBA1 ended.

Yeah, I think I'll wait. I have always wanted to play The Banner Saga but I can't do episodic gaming. I hope I can hold for two more years because this game looks and sounds amazing.

I'm 4 hours in, but I'm going for training a lot. I'm truly loving the game and I just went through a very climactic moment that had me hooked and my son while I read the options to him to help us decide what step to take next. The training challenges are an excellent addition as they make the player think more strategically and really use the abilities of each hero in an optimal way.

To anyone that played the first game and is on the fence to jump in, this game will surely hook you. Don't hesitate to play it.

Remember, folks that backed the first Banner Saga on Kickstarter will get a free key for The Banner Saga 2 if they pledged $50 or more.

Check your emails.

I still haven't gotten anything and they don't respond to my mails. I asked them on twitter and all they did was add me to some group for the game. Very strange that they don't respond.

Looks just as beautiful as the first game but man I was totally not aware that there is going to be a third banner saga, and you won't see the ending until then. Makes me want to wait until the third one is out before buying and playing both, cause the story is so damn interesting.

I got mine over a week ago. You should've gotten an email from Humble Bundle.

Having finished this, I enjoyed the first game quite a bit more. The decisions felt a lot more tense in the first part, the illusion that they mattered was sold a lot better there. A lot of it was that the novelty was much fresher then, but it's also a factor of how many faceless characters that you already start with and don't really have much reason to care if they die. The scenario and story of the first game was also a lot more interesting, this one really suffers from being a middle chapter. It doesn't help that I really didn't care for the new protagonist either. Whatever changes they made to the combat and classes didn't really shake things up all that much. The combat is serviceable, but nothing more. The first game was a pleasant surprise, this one left me pretty eager to get finished with it so I would be done.

ending was kinda awkward

also
the horse units were kinda meh and their role in the story was relatively inconsequential. I didn't really like that. I did like Bolverk though.

a lot of the story just feels like ur watching both caravans move. TBS1 had some really epic moments. The fight at the Varl stronghold with the bridge. Killing Bellower. TBS2 kinda failed in that regard. A lot of epic shit seems to have happened off screen too (the whole thing with the snake swallowing juno, only for Eyvind to blow a hole in its side.
