Last time magic eye images came up in a reddit thread, I was able to figure it out. Now, I forgot how and it's annoying and frustrating.

For those who can't see the Magic Eye pictures, this is the easiest way to do it:

without trying to focus your eyes on the picture, put your nose the closest possible to the monitor, then very slowly back away. You should slowly see the 3D object.
There is an optimal distance between your eyes and the picture at which you should be able to see it better.
Thanks, but that still didn't help me. Last eye checkup I still had 20/10 vision. I really don't know what to do.. I did fail the blue/gold dress test.

I'm pretty sure it must be my astigmatism that's preventing me from ever seeing magic eye shit.

I've tried every trick in the book and nada, nothing, zero, zip.
Same, I have astigmatism too, though of course I'm wearing corrective lenses so I don't know how much of an impact it really has...

YES

This is insane. Some people see nothing in the red circle. Some see an outline of a horse. Some see a horse with mane, tail and saddle standing in grass.

Just horse at first glance, although if I concentrate I can pick out the saddle.

I'm going to open this up in Paint in a moment to confirm, but I assume it's simply how good we are at distinguishing between picking out different close shades of a colour? It's similar for various brightness tests for games software, in that generally when it does the "Reduce the brightness until you can only just see a figure" test, I can usually still see the figure when brightness is at a minimum - but when I carry that brightness into the game, it's generally a bit too dark.

Edit:

The lack of detail suggests that this might be suffering a bit from compression relative to the original image. Which makes me wonder if the extra detail does exist for people who've seen the raw version?
