The Capcom Unity 1942: Joint Strike (XBLA/PSN) Official Thread

I seriously doubt 3rd party controller manufacturers care about that.

That's sort of my point... I'd think that programable/turbo pads/sticks that break competitive systems are a selling point for 3rd party controller manufacturers.

This thread has done one important thing for me, separates the people from hardcore, old school gamers to fucking pansies spoiled by auto fire.

Just sayin' that if you want one in olive, strike sooner rather than later. In other shameless plugs, we've got more awesome coming over the next few weeks.

Isn't Cammy British?

Also, does this stuff ship internationally?

totally. I can't believe people are saying "omg you have to press buttons?!" time to build up the old thumb muscles again, kids.

*waits for backlash from that guy who complains about "outdated" mechanics*

I haven't played a 1942 game since the NES days and I jumped right into Joint Strike. Felt completely natural in this game to button mash.

I really want to pick up the full version, but my backlog is still pretty big. That, and no one of my friend's list seems to play XBLA games.

Man, I hear you. I basically try to push them into them. And for the most part, once I do that, they're hooked. Especially ones with good coop.

Haha.. Look at what the NES Advantage has done to us!

What I find odd is that autofire is completely appropriate for a bullethell shooter but the first 30 seconds of this make it pretty clear that it's not that kind of game. Autofire would ruin it.

This game has the worst menu transition, period. Having to wait and hear the planes cut across the screen multiple times just to adjust the sound (or access anything in the menu) in the menu is really annoying.

The Brits fought too! (Yeah, we kinda fudged it...)

Yes, we ship internationally. Just a heads up that we're now back-ordered on the olive colorway and orders on that color may experience a shipping delay.

Indeed, autofire can be welcome, but specific applications make it less reasonable. You could lay down constant autofire in both a Batsugun and an Ikaruga, but it obviously won't do much for your score in the latter.

When I first crossed the info that you had to tap the button for each fire, I imagined myself shooting in rtype with the system and imagining how it would work. Especially for those battles where you have a strict limit before you're crushed if you don't trigger a next stage in a boss (rtype zero).

Now, it would seem less "strange" to me if each tap can release a volley of bullets, like a 3 round burst shot from a assault rifle. I'm no shump pro, but I do enjoy playing them from time to time. Especially if they have a co-op mode.

Anyone tried both the 360 and the PS3 version of this? I'd prefer to play it on the DualShock 3/SIXAXIS than the 360's shit d-pad.

Agreed. The pussification of gamers continues unchecked.

Yeah, she's British, but she's doing her part to support the allies! We included her twin pigtails and scar to try to leave zero ambiguity.

Oh, and to answer your second question, we ship anywhere! The cart automatically determines the shipping costs.

-edit- Beaten! Shouldn't you be reporting on Comic-Con or something, Geek? :P

Why can't we just get good arcade ports of 19XX or 1944? For 5 bucks a pop. Come on Capcom. Instead we get browned
I wish they had been unlockable here or something, the fact that they haven't showed up on any compilation or other home release sucks.

yup yup!!

I bought a PS3 for MGS4, it was a fantastic game!

other than that every PS3 game I play sucks!! I went back to playing Dreamcast...

but this game gives my PS3 a 2nd chance!!!

I only hope it does something special to exceed 19XX and Aero Fighters... otherwise it'll suck!!

I had the NES Max, but that's another story. But for fuck's sakes, you kids would be crying over MGS torture scene or MGS4 should be torture scene.

I'm awaiting the PS3 version, but online co-op must be sweet.

Except MGS's torture scene didn't last an hour. Of course this game doesn't make you hammer nearly as fast, but button mashing always bothered me.

Screw it, I need a fun schmup. I'm buying the full version tonight, backlog bedamned. If anyone wants to play co-op, my gamertag is GaffiStick.

But thanks for the reply :)

If you think auto fire is what makes this game "pansy", you have no idea what makes a shooter hardcore.

I wouldn't call it pansy, I'd call it uninspired poorly designed shooter that adds nothing, has no soul, and isn't genuinely challenging, pretty to look at, or anywhere near what I would consider a mediocre shmup. It has nothing on the early 90's 19XX games. 1943 had better level design/enemy patterns and much more interesting bosses. The West should stick to FPS that's what we're good at.

just tried the demo. is there any difference between the difficulty levels? 2 star and 4 star felt identical to me. seems better than commando 3...though it's certainly no 19xx

Wanted to like this but the demo feels blah to me after a couple of play-throughs. Agree that the graphics don't pop like they should.

I was never a big fan of the original series through so maybe there was no hope for me on this one....

I'm in the same boat. I actually bought a 4000 point card yesterday during the day because I was going to buy 1942 when I got home but the demo just didn't do it for me.

i don't know if i can recommend this -- just 1cc'd the default difficulty on my first go. and if higher difficulties just cut into your margin for error, i don't know if they're much worth exploring. the scoring seems like an afterthought -- it's no fun getting close to enemies who'll randomly shoot you at point-blank range, and i don't know why you'd build milkable multipart bosses and then encourage players to dispatch them quickly. what difficulty there is seems to be generated by underpowered weapons -- the classic pitfall of the amateur shmup. it has its moments...the third level harbor area feels kind of like raiden. but mostly it seems chaotic and messy. far from the worst $10 i've spent on a download service, and nowhere near as dull as commando 3, but i may never touch this again

edit: after playing it through again, i think these impressions are overly harsh -- it's decent fun

Hmmm so I bought the game on PSN and seem to have ran into a weird glitch while playing online with a random person. As soon as I got to the third level, I couldn't move while the other player was still moving and blasting away. The screen started to turn black or something and I could still hear the sound effects, but couldn't really make out what was happening on screen. Very weird.

it didn't record my score on that first playthrough, so i went through it again on 2 star, and liked it better. for some reason. shrug. i'm #8 on the ps3 scoreboards, btw -- don't suppose that'll last

Sorry if old.

A demo for the PSN version has certainly been confirmed, though not mentioned when it was coming. I'm going to guess next week hopefully.

It's a fun game. For those wondering it has the 3 burst shots style of shooting. Every tap don't result in a single bullet. I wish I could change fire to a shoulder button or something though. After three games I was feeling the pain. I'm probably tapping too much though. I stop to charge shot when appropriate.

Just beat 1942 a few more times. Ranked 27th in the world on Wing king(Hardest Difficulty).

Ive noticed a few things in the credits. Jane pinckard(Old 1up) and Tina sanchez(new 1up) are in the credits :D

IGN XBLA Review:

IGN Ratings for 1942: Joint Strike

5.0 Presentation
Though there's a slick film grain on some screens, there's really nothing but a shell containing a very short game.

7.0 Graphics
The visuals have been completely reworked, leaving behind no real traces of the very old original title. It certainly looks shiny.

5.5 Sound
It would have been great to get some ear-catching sound effects for the special weapons, but the FX are pretty weak all around.

7.5 Gameplay
Most of fun from the original 194x series is here along with some welcome twists, but single-player is kind of a bore. Online co-op has occasional issues.

4.0 Lasting Appeal
This is one short game. You can beat it in a half hour. The idea is that you will want to keep coming back to better your score, but the draw's not really there.

7.0
Decent OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

I don't care about lack of autofire in shmups personally, but it's worth noting that all of Cave's shooters (that are probably 10x more hardcore than this game) still offer autofire assigned to 3rd button.

That's nice.

I think it's a tremendously stupid, game-killing design oversight. How could they think that was a good idea... jesus...

sadly this is what is preventing me from spending the 800pts for this one... i love all the old 194X games :(

And how long were the old 194X games? OH THAT'S RIGHT HALF AN HOUR. SO WAS MERCS

They prop games around 2am CST of release days.. Nice to see you around the Gaf, ex-roomie. :)
Hah! LTNS! :D

I played for a couple hours the other night. I like it quite a bit -- definitely more so than Commando 3. No button config is kind of a drag, and I had weird issues with saving (it wouldn't save my progress until I manually went into the settings and chose a storage device), but apart from that, I'm diggin' it.

I tend to agree, but SSDHD strongly disagrees. Then again, it's like an exception that proves the rule.

Although I'm very partial to Disposable Hero as well - an old Amiga shmup.

i wasnt complaining that it was shorter or longer than the older games.. its just harder for me to justify spending $10 on a game that can be beaten in 30-60min.

those cave games are different. anyone going into a 1942 remake with those games in mind will be very disappointed.

sucks that there isn't a psn demo this week. I played it on my 360, but the ps3 is the system hooked up to the big screen tv, and with my moneys attached

As someone with an arcade stick (PS3), I'm rather bummed that I can't customize the buttons.
