The Capcom Unity 1942: Joint Strike (XBLA/PSN) Official Thread

It does look good but it really is missing the "charm" of the old games. It's just a little plain looking. Seems to be lacking any personality. I still plan on picking it up, though.

1942 was one of the first NES games I owned, so I'm looking forward to this one. The graphics look OK for my tastes. I hope the ending is just like 1942: "Congratulation".

I don't understand all the hate for commandos 3. It seemed fine to me.

As someone who loved the original Commando, I was pretty excited for C3. I just couldn't get over the fact that they'd changed it into a twin-stick shooter. Sounds silly, but it just stripped away a lot of the charm and nostalgia, and made it feel like another typical XBLA shooter.

Looking forward to this game.

Wipeout HD and Bionic Commando Rearmed look like aren't going to be released soon, so I think 1942 will be my main downloadable game this month.

Well, in the case of Bionic Commando Rearmed, Capcom does have to give this game here some time to breathe.

I have high hopes for this one :) Some folks are worried about a vertical shooter using a widescreen format, but the game has really been designed with this in mind. It's the gameplay of 19XX with the flight formations of 1941: Counter Attack.

Meaning, you're going to get your crazy weapons and kamikaze pilots are much more of a threat than bullet patterns.

phew for a while there i thought all of you were shitting on the bionic commando remake, which i hope is great, not commandos 3.

Actually, an hour and 20 minutes. New XBL content goes up at 2AM PST.

(Unless something has changed recently?)

In the past the content has been known to show up an hour or two hours early.

Yaaaay you were right. Downloading now!

And Go! Go! Break Steady! which everyone should also buy.

Hrmm hesitant to pull the trigger with Siren coming this week, and Eden next week, Hopefully they'll have a demo up.

It's...not as good as I had hoped.

I need to play Ikaruga to get the slow taste of the 1940 series out of my mouth :lol

I think there are people who'll really like it, I'm just not one of them anymore, at least: not yet.

I don't like the button mashing, should be constant fire when holding down A.

Yes...yes it should

Not surprised if it sucks. Didn't like the look of it since the first screens, videos. Original games also were very frustrating, making them often not fun at all imo. Nostalgia makes people forget.

It doesn't suck but they added so much on the screen it doesn't feel like 1942. And I don't remember any shields, but again it was long ago that I was sitting at tabletop versions so I could have forgot about it. It just doesn't feel right.

It was a must buy an hour ago, not so sure now.

hey i like the game... im not used to the buttom mashing but the game is really fun... because of the new visuals is hard to keep track of whats on the screen... but i'd say this game is one of the better xbox live titles.

Noo, and here i was hoping for a good game to spend my 800ms points that i have left.

Guess i'll go download the demo... maybe it will turn out good for me.

Another old favourite destroyed. /cry etc

What didn't you like? Damn, that sucks. We finally get a new 1942 game and it turns out like this. (Im referring to the many below average scores).

It isn't the first game in the series using "widescreen"(exactly vertical shooter with non-rotated screen):

Ugh, why couldn't they separate the function to two buttons? I'm sure we have enough buttons...

There shouldn't be a problem using the VSHG with this, should there? Not that I'm sure I want it now if I'm going to be getting RSI from tapping X.

the fact you cannot change this ruins the game for me. carpal tunnel syndrome ftl.

also the bit where you fly down is stupid, and the weapons generally suck besides the spray fire.

You have to tap the shoot button? That's strange.
Whoa! Seems kinda minor, but no fucking way. Tap tap tap I hate tapping the damn buttons. There should definitely be some sort of toggle in the controls menu. Looks like I'll hold off on this until I hear they maybe patched it. This game requires a lot of shooting, so a lot of tapping is a turn-off. Ugh...how the fuck do you get that wrong? It's a friggin' remake of a shooter. Just stick to the original plan. :( PEACE.

Just tried the demo it was ok but it out shone be a Ikargua or some of teh otehr SHMUPs on XBLA. Might have picked it up as a little time killer if I didn't still have Assault Heroes 2 and Commando 3 to finish.

I bought it this morning after checking the demo briefly. I did not have time to play the full game yet, but 2 things bothered me:
1 - Tapping the A button to fire (as already mentioned)O
2 - The plane animations on the menu. It is cool the first time, but it is overused, slow and a pain to navigate the menus after a few seconds.

I can only play it more tonight.

For shmups you can usually tell when they're going to suck just by looking at videos - and this looked like it will suck. I guess I'll buy it still, it's 19xx series after all :\

I absolutely cannot believe there are people posting in a shmup thread complaining about having to tap to fire.

After around 3 decades of these games, I've got a right thumb that moves at around 60,500 bpm.

tap/charge has been part of this series for awhile I think, seems a weird thing to complain about.

You do know this is because you can CHARGE shots?
I've played about an hour and I think it definitely feels like a 1942 game with some additions.
It's no train wreck like GAF would have you believe...

This is an ARCADE GAME - on par with Commandos...

In No 1942 game has there ever been an auto shoot button, ever. Doing so would ruin the whole bloody idea. Most games in the series had a charge attack instead.

Pansies, the lot of you!

ok, ok, I can live with the tapping. I am not a hardcore shmup fan, but I do like the genre.

But I still feel that the menu animations are overused.

1942 was the first video game I ever played, on the nes and I was 6 years old. It was the beginning of a lifelong romance. So I cant wait to get it, prolly will get on 360 just cuz I got more friends on there.

I've dropped a few coins in the arcade machines since then, but the last time I played it extensively was on the NES. :lol I had no idea the game was a tap-fest. My memory of this game was a lot better than the reality of it. WTF were we doing do our thumbs back then? PEACE.
