To a degree, but he didn't just appear simply because he disagreed with Batman's ideals.

His only point usually has been to play with Batman, which is the reason he doesn't want to kill him, as he wouldn't have a playmate after that, and to prove Batman and everyone else are as insane and devoid of common decency as he is. In that sense The Dark Knight, and Ledger's performance, follow the source material (i.e. Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum) perfectly.

Hmm...kinda ambivalent about the casting

I didn't think Ledger would make a good Joker. I sure as hell was wrong.

I'll give them a chance before jumping to decisions.

Freshmaker said:
No. He was just there. Anyone could've done what Ledger did.

Monotone: Hi. *smack* I am evil. *smack* Be evil too. *smack*

We must have watched different Batmans..

I still think Jack's Joker was better and closer to the way Joker should be.. but in no shape or form was Ledger's Joker bland.. He played insane to the T

The casting thread is lost.

"The Dark Knight Rises" could give Los Angeles a much-needed lift.

The next installment in the Batman franchise will film at least partially in Los Angeles beginning this summer, people familiar with the project said.

Warner Bros. recently set up a production office for "The Dark Knight Rises" at the Los Angeles Center Studios, where director Christopher Nolan also had an office during the filming of "Inception," which filmed in six countries but featured some key scenes in L.A.

Although it's not clear how much of the movie will film locally, having a major studio feature (with an estimated budget of at least $175 million) shoot even partially in town comes at a welcome time for L.A., which also is playing host to the fourth installment of the "Spider-Man" franchise. The region has been struggling to keep such big productions from shooting outside of California.

People are saying that they aren't interested in the characters, but maybe that's the point: to bring the interest back. To reinvigorate these characters with a different approach.

For the people saying that will not have any catwoman ...

In batman begins this was the dude that is listed as Ra's al Ghul :

Liam Nesson is listed as Ducard ...
wich gave me huge brainfuck even with him being IDENTICAL to hq's Ra's

And as people said, Aaron Heckhart is listed as Harvey Dent and not
Two Face

Didn't say he was bland. I said he was one dimensional and spoke in a monotone. Insanity's all the Joker had.

Anne Hathaway? Catwoman? Really? We couldn't get any better villains? I'd have preferred the Penguin again. Or the Riddler again. Bah. My hopes that he might be able to top TDK are slowly fading.

But I hold all judgement until I see a trailer.

...Or cheap parlor tricks to hide your real identity.

And Ledger's wasn't?

If we're talking about one dimensional Joker, we should talk about Nicholson's Joker, who was nothing more than a buffoon.

Yeah but the way they revealed it they wanted to keep the door open for the immortality thing, but I always got the impression that for the nolan-verse it was more a name that was handed down. Like the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Or maybe watch the movie?

Catwomans gonna be in this to test Batman, Bane to break him
Bane hires Catwoman to steal an experimental growth hormone from Wane Enterprises. She's paid to get close to Wayne, accidentally falls for him, yadda yadda fight scene.

I really hope Nolan tones down the 'Batman voice' this time around. It got pretty ridiculous in the last movie.

Not a chance. They may put it in the middle of the movie, though.

I feel like the movie would have to be 3 hours long (at least) to pull that plot off reasonably. The "broken bat" thing would feel incredibly cheap if he is back on his feet and Batmanning his way to the climax a half hour after it happens thanks to a recovery montage.

Umm what the hell? Both portrayals were really one-dimensional. But still that didn't stop from my enjoyment of them.

Nicholson's Joker is great, it's just after a successful reboot everybody's so sudden to shit all over him. Heath's Joker would definitely not fit in Burton's Batman films. and vice-versa on the nicholson one.

I'm calling it, as soon as Spiderman reboot comes out everybody will be trashing the Raimi films. :(

The third movie deserves all the hatred it receives.

Dude, thats been happening since 2007. When S-M3 came out and sucked so bad, a lot of GAF went into this retroactive bullshit saying the first two movies sucked too, despite the fact that likely every one of them was slobbing at the knob of S-M2 in 2004.

Spider-man 2 is a great movie. Still the best comic book flick to date. I have high hopes for the reboot, but I'll cut off my left foot if it's better than SM2.

Raimi was the perfect guy to handle the tone of Spider-man. Wish he had just bailed on the 3rd flick when the studio started hammering square pegs into round holes.

Nicholson's Joker was great when I watched the movie when it was released, when I was 14 years old. Not so much nowadays.

I've got nothing against his performance though, I'm just starting get irritated by people putting it on some kind of pedestal, and downplaying Ledger's unarguably marvelous performance.

Really excited with the Bane casting and Catwoman sorta makes sense too.

The whole reason Wayne wanted to give up being Batman was so he could be with the woman he loved.
If he falls for Catwoman and she becomes his 'partner', he still has to be Batman but at least he gets someone to be Batman with.

Really hope they bring Scarecrow back in some form, maybe Bane breaks him out of Arkham Asylum and gets him to create the venom drug so he has an edge over Batman.

The next film in the Batman series – “The Dark Knight Rises” – to be directed by Christopher Nolan, might be filmed in Bucharest this spring, City Hall officials told Mediafax newswire.
Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu said the film’s producers and city officials met to discuss technical issues and director Christopher Nolan presented a list of shooting locations for a future project, such as Bucharest’s historical center and Edgar Quinet Street. People close to the matter said filming might also take place in the Palace of Parliament, as some members of the production team have visited a few of its rooms.
Nolan visited the Turda salt mines in northwestern Romania in December 2010. Turda Mayor said the visit was “unofficial” but involved “scouting” for a future project.
The new Batman film is currently in the pre-production stage and should be finalized in 2012, according to previous announcements. It will feature Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman.

the interior of that salt mine looks like it would make a good set for a prison interior or something

EDIT: if theyre showing bane's backstory

Or maybe it's where Bruce retreats to after Bane breaks his back?

I don't think Bane's going to be a giant bodybuilder in a luchador mask. He'll certainly be buff, but Nolan's probably going to play up the psychological aspect more than the brute force thing.

Bane will wear a suit. I think we can all bet on that.

I'm betting he will still have a mask of sorts. Not only to hide his identity, but most of the Nolan villains have had something going on with their face, its always a visually distinguishing feature.

Scarecrow had his mask, Joker had his make-up and Two-Face had his burns.

Hopefully it's not a wrestler thing though.

If they establish in flashbacks that Bane fights topless and in a mask when he was in prison it will kinda make sense that he strips down to the same when he goes up against Batman. Batman doesn't have any guns after all. The rest of the time he can just be in a suit/regular clothes when antagonizing Bruce during the day and maybe wear a Hush kinda get-up plus Bane mask when he is doing his villain thing at night.

Maybe those Salt Mines are the new Batcave?

I do hope they're not going to cram all this into a 1hr and 30 minute film...

Yeah, because Batman Begins and TDK were 90 minutes...

Tom Hardy's face is too pretty to hide behind a mask.

....my sister told me to post that. Or my mom. It was a woman that's all I know.
