I've never understood Robin Williams hate. I love his brand of totally pointless, harmless comedy.

ITT people pretend Robin Williams can't be a good actor. Dude is great, he'd be the only oscar winner in the whole cast. So does that news have any credibility?

Hopefully Bale joins him by the time it's come out.
You're also forgetting about a certain Mr. Caine.

I do not mind his stand up, but in movies it is so rare that he plays something not typical Robin Williams (as in the same character he has been playing since Mork).
Insomnia, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poet Society and whatnot are rare exceptions.

The problem with Dent was his transparent arc. In his first scene you can already tell he will be corrupted. You know it's going to have something to do with Rachel, too (who really is such a poorly done character). It came off as very mechanical, which is in contrast to Joker's arc which was so organic. More time needed to be dedicated to Dent's story. Which many people, of course, think means it should have it's own movie. What should've been done is have to have Dent in a smaller role in BB. It would've developed Rachel and Dent much better, too. They could've gotten to Two-face slightly earlier in TDK and developed that story better.

No shit, he's Two-Face! As soon as you know he's in the movie, you know he'll be corrupted.

I've never understood hating him as an actor. Hating on him as a comedian is totally warranted.

I guess what I was referring to was Robin Williams in insane scatter-shot improv mode, not bad familyish comedy mode.

So, the fact remains they show he's capable of doing more than lighthearted comedy roles

Thank god that this is a Christopher Nolan movie too, right ?

My favorite Robin Williams role is in the most underated movie EVER : Death to Smoochy

Robin Williams is the first piece of casting news, or rumour that makes me fucking excited, please be true, one of the best dramatic actors of his generation.

And i say that with the addendum that i dont like his humour at all

So, if Strange is in the movie-- We go back to the Prey rumors? Strange figures out Batman's identity, hires Bane to bring him down. Then all the while, Batman is trying to figure out Catwoman?

I could see it.

The Joker had an arc? He moved other people's arcs along, but I didn't notice if he had an arc.

His arc is somewhat open to interpretation and isn't set on a single thing.

First of all we have him and his quest to prove that people are just as mean and sick as he is. He fails in this and is somewhat saddened by this fact when the people don't blow themselves up.

He also wants to kill Batman in the beginning, until he realizes that Batman is an immovable object. Instead of seeing Batman as someone to destroy he sees him as a rival.

Finally there is the whole point of the Joker not being a part of the system. He "doesn't make plans." He doesn't scheme. Of course by the end of the movie you learn that he is a schemer and his plans are foiled.

Just because you saw it coming doesn't mean it's mechanical or transparent. Not all movies need a...

Not to mention that they set up his seedy-under belly. He was "corrupt" (or at the very least, not the man he always presented himself to be) before the movie began. The joker just helped to unleash his other sides.

robin williams is an excellent dramatic actor--his performance in good will hunting is a case in point. it's too bad, though, that he's been in far too many (crappy) comedies; he's better than that.

So it’s all done, right? Maybe, maybe not. I’ve now heard from three different sources that there is another character in The Dark Knight Rises, one who ties the whole thing together. Could that be Hugo Strange, who everybody has been crazy about? Could it be Talia Al’Ghul, who was rumored earlier? Or could it just be The Scarecrow, making his third appearance in the Nolan films?

I don’t know the answer to any of this, but I think that we’re going to soon learn this movie isn’t just about Bane and Selina Kyle.

I think it will probably be Talia and I'm not sure Nolan would want to announce her presence, it might be a fun surprise to tie all the movies together.

Here is a longer comment from Batman On Film about what his tweet about RW meant

Absolutely nothing. All I was doing was thinking out loud after a chat I had with an industry friend of mine. I’ve made no secret that 1) I’d LOVE it if Robin Williams finally got his wish and was cast in a Batman film, and, 2) I’d also love to see the character of Hugo Strange included in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Put those 2 together things together and, “RW as Strange? Hmm…..”

That’s it.

I’m flattered that all these outlets think that one of my Tweets is a story, but really, they’re all making a mountain out of very small anthill. If I knew that Hugo Strange was in the film for a fact -- as well as Robin Williams portraying the character -- I wouldn’t say anything about it anywhere.

So it doesn't look like as sure a thing as I would hope.

I'm expecting a bittersweet ending. I think what it's ultimately going to be, is the death of Bruce Wayne as he is enveloped by his creation.

I agree. Maybe the Joker will break out of Arkham or some other crazy super villain will show up and Bruce will come to the realization that Batman can never end. This is his life from now on.

I know it's just fantasy casting, but Robin Williams as Hugo Strange would be damned exciting. I'd love to see Nolan direct Williams again. That was a great little period for great Robin Williams roles, with Insomnia, Death to Smoochy and One Hour Photo all in 2002. He's been in mostly lackluster stuff since, aside from World's Greatest Dad.

Christopher Nolan talked about the third installment of his Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises, at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival where he was presented with the Modern Master Award for Inception on Sunday night.

ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype attended the event and sat in on the tribute to the director at the Arlington Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara where Nolan said he saw Aliens years ago.

We listened in as moderator Pete Hammond asked where he got the title from and Nolan joked, "I banged my head against the wall."

The audience laughed and then Nolan went on to say, "We've worked on it a long time - David Goyer and myself. We're about 12 weeks away from shooting. We start in May."

It's been known that Nolan wasn't sure if he was going to do another film or not, so when Hammond asked why he decided to do a third one, he simply said, "It was about finishing the story."

Nolan still wouldn't confirm whether Anne Hathaway would play Catwoman or just Selina Kyle. When asked, he smiled coyly and wouldn't say a word.

I really hope there isn't yet another character. There are way too many points of interest being brought up in a film that I personally hope goes back to focusing on Bruce.

I'm betting on the name Catwoman not being used in the film, except maybe in a throwaway instance. No biggie.

That's a silly concern right now. Based on what's confirmed, there's currently less main characters than both previous films.

Some new comments from Wally Pfister:

Pfister answers several questions, and makes it clear that he’s deep in prep, has read the screenplay. “As much as possible” will be filmed in IMAX, he promises, and he also makes specific reference the opening sequence being something impressive, something that could live up to, if not surpass, the spectacle of the last film.

On Anne Hathaway:

So, Wally you shot Anne’s screen test for Catwoman?

To which he replied in the affirmative. That’s a yes to Kevin saying “Catwoman”, not “Selina Kyle”. Hmmm.

Pfister added, a little later:

She looks phenomenal in the wardrobe.
