Day for night, also known as nuit américaine ("American night"), is the name for cinematographic techniques used to simulate a night scene; such as using tungsten-balanced rather than daylight-balanced film stock or with special blue filters and also under-exposing the shot (usually in post-production) to create the illusion of darkness or moonlight.

Historically, infrared movie film was used to achieve an equivalent look with black-and-white film.

A great way to achieve this effect is to tune the white balance of the camera to a yellow source if there is no tungsten setting. Another way to make a more believable night scene is to underexpose the footage to the desired degree of night/darkness. This depends on the amount of light shown or believed to be in the given scene.

He isn't nocturnal, he is out when he is needed.
Night is just when most shit goes down and it is not as easy to vanish in broad daylight.

If you're going to do that it still needs to be dark enough for all the city lights to show up, the middle of the day would not cut it.

It's really obvious sometimes too.

People casting shadows/selfshadowing when they should not.

I thought most people were aware of the practice. Its not some big industry secret or anything, and like the poster above me said, sometimes its so obvious that I don't know how anyone could miss it.

28 Weeks Later is an example that instantly comes to mind for overwhelmingly obvious.

There's a difference between shooting a scene in dayight then 'dimming it down', but to shoot a snowing scene and then have it totally at night (which I still don't think it'll be) can surprise someone..

It's a common practice, but to what extent exactly..

That was supposed to be at night? It always looked like it was either shot at late sunset or early dawn.

No, quite a bit was shot at dusk/night. That picture looks more like set-up/rehearsal.

The Hong Kong sequence is a poor example of day-for-night because it was a combination of interiors with green screen, on-location shooting with actors; IMAX plates shot with a helicopter and Batman composited later in post, etc...

Yep, they had to build cgi replicas of the skyscrapers too. They were originally planning to do the skyscraper jump for real but weren't allowed, shame.

Maybe it's just me, but I actually think that Bale looks a bit better in the Batman suit. Maybe it's because he put on more muscle, or maybe it's because they changed the suit. It doesn't look like his neck is so thin anymore.

It was a rehearsal.
Lack of mask was only for practice. Also, everyone fights during the real thing.

I don't know what to say...That looks nothing like catwoman to me :( Instead of a mask she will have those fancy goggles? and the catsuit has strange pigmentation and it's not latex! (not tight)

I haven't seen the movie, but apparently she does? Unless the picture isn't what it says it is? Have you seen the film or read the screenplay?
I mean, who says Selina can't do some silly shit before she becomes cat woman? She needs the costume and the name straight out the gate?
