The Darkness: The Official Thread

It's been my most anticipated shooter for a while now, mainly because Riddick is so awesome.

And I'll cry if the PS3 version is noticably inferior, because I don't want to buy a 360 right now.

It runs great, it looks great and it has more tv content.

Haven't seen the 360 version but when there is graphical improvement it can't be any more than a very little... the PS3-version is NOT a watered down port at all, like VT3, FEAR, THP8 etc.

I fail to see how the added TV content is a viable selling point. I mean, are people gonna hunker down in front of a virtual TV to watch hours of television when they could be throwing dumpsters at cops with cool tenticle arms? I think not.

Yeah it seems like a lame bonus, I'll be getting this for X360 cause I like the controller better for FPS's.

How can you make that statement when you haven't had the chance to compare both SKUs side-by-side?
I'm pretty sure he means features wise considering the games he mentioned were lacking features that made them watered down. Online for example. 360 & PS3 are pretty much the same in that respect IIRC.

1 The games got exactly the same content, except the PS3 has the nice gimmicky addition of the tv channels.
2 The game runs very smooth on PS3, contrary to some bad ports.
3 The game looks really, really good regardless of the 360 version. So yes, there is maybe a possibility that the 360-version looks a little bit better, but that doesn't mean the PS3-version looks ugly in any possible way.

You're completely right. :) The creators themselves called it a fun gimmicky addition. But it's fun nevertheless that it's there, and it's not with the 360-version. But it doesn't matter that much indeed.

I was just being serious here.... it's not like they can solve things like that easily now can they?

It's not quite straight forward as that. Xbox360 has 512mb of unified memory, PS3 has 256mb video ram and 256mb of system ram. Doesn't mean the Xbox360 has 256mb more ram available for textures. It does mean that it can use more memory for textures if the developers choose to while on the PS3 you're basically forced to only use 256mb for textures/geometry/animations. Factor 5 has done some pretty interesting things with using the cell to prepare textures/geometry for the video card. All I mean is that it's not as simple as looking at the numbers and saying "The xbox360 has twice the video ram as the PS3".

Yeah, I guess it's a noteworthy addition, just not anything that would sway me to buy one version over the other. I lean toward the 360 at the moment for the controller and achievements. Hopefully some of the early reviews will tell us which is the DEFINITIVE VERSION once and for all.

Starbreeze respect meter +1

Yeah, there are a lot of unlockables, a lot of great and also very funny accomplishments to complete.

Also, the game runs great on PS3.

About the 'WWI' level: it's not really WWI but an 'other place' that feels a lot like WWI.

I can say the atmosphere there was one of the most impressive I've ever felt in any game yet. It's a feeling of great respect towards the creators, which I also had with Mafia and RE4, that they can even create such an atmosphere in a medium like videogames.

The video stuff is kind of cool on PS3. It's just whole movies, cartoons, video clips. All real life stuff running on tvs in the game. But I must admit that I like the short Max Payne 2 videos more, because who would watch a film of an hour or more in a game any way...?

Talking about Max Payne, this game has some great dialog...

wow..

But PS3 OS still consumes about 50MB more RAM.

hey is the frame rate locked? Or does it slow down to crawl when a lot of stuff starts happening?

That was before the system launched. Correct me if I am wrong but it no longer consumes 96 MB ram. The texture issue must have arise from developers having difficulty with PS3's two ram pools

Yeah, but OS consumed like 60MB more at the time and Sony freed about 10MB AFAIK.

Controller is of course a totally personal choice. And in the PS3 you do have all the accomplishments as well, but of course not the points like you have in the XBL system.

Yeah, that's what I repeatedly thought while playing the game. :)

Also the great feeling of respect towards the developer, that's something I only have with the best games.

can I ask you, what media are you working for?

Gamer.nl, biggest (and best of course :) ) dutch gaming website.

...and I want to add that I'm not too quickly hyped about games in general, I gave every PS3-game except Resistance below the international average. So I'm quite critical, but there isn't much critique on The Darkness, only admiring.

Oh no, it's an enemy! Who are you then? And what more can you elaborate on your point of view?

one more question. I know that single player is good, how is multi holding up?

Gameparty network and well we're better of course.
Didn't know that site, just checked. Seems like a PC gaming site. Gamer.nl is multiplatform, which I like of course otherwise I didn't own a PS3 debug. :D

Dude is the frame rate rock solid? Answer my question!

The frame rate is good. I do not know if it's fixed, I'm not a technician. But I did not notice any framedrop during the whole playthrough of the preview version.

And I'm quite experienced now with framedrops on the PS3. :lol

Any interesting use of SixAxis motion controls with the tentacles at all?

Why the hate..... but yeah it's true. I review there and have no interest in the other sites at all :/

Who is this guy?

How do you know this?

Can we have more? :P

Seems a bit one-sided.

if you think so, listen to this:

IGN:
Does that cause any problems for Starbreeze though?

Paul Jenkins: Well, they are incredibly creative but they're also slightly crazy Swedish people - which is an interesting mix. At the first meeting about the game they had some absolutely crazy ideas about the direction they wanted to take the game in. A lot of those things we just couldn't use because they were too bizarre or it would have been hard to set them up in the first game when you're really just introducing players to the Darkness abilities. However, we did manage to get some of those ideas into the finished game.

IGN: Can you tell us about those crazy ideas?

Paul Jenkins: Well, not really because I'd be giving too much of the game away. Let's just say that Starbreeze wanted Jackie to become incredibly powerful at one point. So powerful he could devour planets. That's something we've tried to include in the game and I was amazed that we were even able to pull it off a little bit.

devour planets :lol

lol I was thinking just that. My thought would be that these thugs can't see the 6 foot tentacles sticking out of this guy otherwise they'd be running the other way. Still, it must be nice to fling these guys into the air like it's no big deal.

XSamu said:
That sounds awesome. I love it when you're able to become rly rly powerful in a game.

yea but read the interview, Paul Jenkins didn't allow that idea to happen.
