The Darkness: The Official Thread

The insane thing about it is that there are no effects being applied to his voice. That's all Patton.

That's a shame, as it doesn't quite cut it in its current state. It's kind of like making a name for yourself as the peculiar hammerless carpenter, never mind the fact that the stuff you build isn't up to par.

Sbz replaced melee with gun kata, because, let's be honest, why punch or pistol whip someone if you've got a loaded gun.

It's not quite straight forward as that. Xbox360 has 512mb of unified memory, PS3 has 256mb video ram and 256mb of system ram. Doesn't mean the Xbox360 has 256mb more ram available for textures. It does mean that it can use more memory for textures if the developers choose to while on the PS3 you're basically forced to only use 256mb for textures/geometry/animations. Factor 5 has done some pretty interesting things with using the cell to prepare textures/geometry for the video card. All I mean is that it's not as simple as looking at the numbers and saying "The xbox360 has twice the video ram as the PS3".

I always hate whenever I read things like this because it just perpetuates the lies and ignorance about the PS3 memory architecture. If it's not the memory issue, it's the texture issue or, my personal favorite, the A.I issue which has taken on a life of its own. Sadly, they're all lies that are pulled out like arrows to justify baseless accusations.

The PS3 is not limited to 256MB of VRAM as the RSX can easily use additional system RAM if required. Also, I wouldn't go around preaching the unified memory model before researching the disadvantages of it.

Looks good but the auto-aiming is way too high, hopefully there is a setting for this.
Yeah, there's a slider for that, you can adjust it the way you want.

About the quality of Riddick compared to this game: I really loved Riddick and I think it's a great game, but this game is better. There isn't much room left for improvement because Riddick was already so damn great so it means a lot when they can make a game better than it.

Mesijs, one more question; does the graphical quality of the game still hold up when you play it in standard def? Most of the HD-scenes look incredible, but I think the game will lose some (if not a lot) of it's graphical impact when it's played on a SDTV. Care to elaborate?

I'm actually playing on a SDTV because I don't own a HD one. :lol But yes, the game looks great. Sure, it's much sharper on a HDTV, these movies at high resolution look better of course than on a SDTV but it's still beatiful.

I can say more about the game after posting a preview on 12 june. Then I can say things about difficulty, setting, variation, etc. I will give some more in-depth opinion about the game by then, because all I now said was: OMG it's great!!!

I guess I'm still on the fence about this game. I like the premise of the story but all the videos I've seen so far look sort of disjointed. Like using the guns is just an afterthought, seems to me why bother if you've got all this dark power instead?
I am hoping the game has some interesting puzzles and good AI because I'm worried that being so super-powerful will make the game boring if the AI is weak or the level design boxes you in.
I don't normally like really dark games, probably because the black levels on my TV aren't that great unless I'm playing at night.
Hopefully we'll get some early reviews.

Guns are a lot of fun, also because of the great execution moves. You will use them a lot, but you can completely choose the way you play. Want to kill everybody in a hous with guns? Go for it. Want to kill them all with creeping dark? Your own choice. You can play it the way you want.
Also, there are 3 difficulty settings and also an adjustable lock-on setting, so you can make it as difficult as you want. You are not invulnerable for sure. And the level design is really, really good. Besides, the storyline is thé thing that drives you and it has some very interesting locations.

I'm obviously no developer or 3d effect extrodonairre, but wouldn't AF be a pretty big factor here too? I know with Oblivion the AF in the PS3 version made a pretty decent difference in texture quality alone. I mean, couldn't you technically have the most high-res textures on the planet but if you could only see them 3 feet in front of you before becoming blurred, would it really matter?

Maybe we'll see something similar with this title, less AA on the PS3 but AF enabled.

How about we reserve all the 360 vs. PS3 stuff for after the game has released and you guys can make accurate comparisons while the rest of us are off playing the damn thing?

The PS3 version was developed concurrently with the 360 sku. It is not a port.

yeah, but you have to admit that its pretty disheartening when you have to put blind faith into a PS3 multiplatform preorder, which I did yesterday for the PS3 Sku =/

I do posses this faith though....

Because it's awesome? ...I'll miss it. :(

Oh well, guess shooting people in the mouth when they shout in pain after having been shot in the kneecap, throwing cars at them, impaling them and eating their face will have to do.

Any info on MP? I read that it was going to be darkling based, but that's all I know.
Finally, I was able to check out some of The Darkness' multiplayer mode in a four-person deathmatch. Multiplayer plays out much like a standard shooter deathmatch, with the notable exception of being able to toggle options such as allowing players to transform into Darkling berzerkers at will. This proves to be a great benefit to the multiplayer, as deathmatch would be fairly unremarkable without it. Playing as a Darkling of course gives players no ranged attack, but it does boost speed, confer a particularly powerful melee attack, and, best of all, allow players to scale sheer walls with great speed. Darklings also have the secondary bonuses of being much more difficult targets, thanks to their small size and quickness. All in all, The Darkness' multiplayer is unlikely to be an online staple, but it should prove a fun diversion, particularly early on as players experiment with the novelty of the Darkling.

Finally, it's time for a bit of hands-on with the multiplayer mode. Except the multiplayer mode is blatantly not very finished, so it's difficult to get a handle on how the currently twitchy aiming system will end up in the finished game. What it is possible to get a handle on is the game's Aliens vs Predator-style asymmetric multiplayer modes, which look like they'll work well, owing to the fact that they some or all of them provide players with the choice of transforming into a darkling and scaling walls and ceilings and generally scurrying about.

There are four game modes in total: there's Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, which can either be played as humans or with the ability to transform into darklings. There's Capture the Flag, which also has an asymmetrical darklings versus humans mode. There's Survivor, in which everyone but one player starts as humans. It's that one person's job to infect the rest of the players to make them transform into darklings. And finally there's Last Human, in which the aim is to become a human by killing the single human player, and then trying to stay human for as long as possible.

It's funny you mentioned Oblivion because it's one game that actually had higher resolution textures than the 360 version. I'm not sure about the AF improvements, but one obvious improvement was in the draw distance - which was made possible by improving the shader code to make it perform better on the RSX. The trend nowadays is towards graphic engines that stream textures, geometry, level data and sound from either the DVD (360) or HDD / BD (PS3). Gears of War is a texture streaming poster child and Ratchet & Clank for the PS3 will also feature this technology.

After finally beating Super Paper Mario, time to give my 360 a lil more love. Need something a bit more violent after all that cutsey :lol

Gotta finish FF12 finally, but the question now comes...

The Darkness, Overlord, or Two Worlds?

Don't they all come out like the same time? I can only get 1, hmm....

Get The Darkness, it's made by a proven developer and it looks f'n awesome.

People are really underestimating this game, I really hope the good reviews (prediction) and word of mouth moves a lot of copies. I want to see Starbreeze get big sales, they deserve it.

Are those other two really coming out so soon? Overlord looks really amazing, but apparently the interface isn't as intuitive as it needs to be. I'm definitely going to at least rent it though.

Also, is The Darkness more of an FPS, or a first person adventure in a horror setting? Because I don't know if my 360 needs another shooter. I already have GOW, Vegas, EDF 2017 and Quake 4.

It's totally NOT a shooter in the conventional sense of the word. It's not running and gunning all the way through. There's much attention to storyline, you will talk with persons etc. Please don't compare it with the games you just mentioned. ;) It's not your typical fast-paced shooter with explosions ongoing all the time.

The monologue/loading scenes came out really well. See the subway video as an example.

Sbz are great at creating compelling playable characters even in a first person game.

Its more of an FPA from what I've seen (like Riddick), intense action with adventure elements and a strong story.

Game looks bad ass. However, as weird as this sounds given the name of the game, I can't see shit in some of those gameplay pictures. =/

I think the videos are kind of dark. You get some kind of dark vision when in dark (in Jackie's darkness form).

so why do you guys think they continue to NOT showing ANY PS3 footage at this point?

why should they? The PS3 version was playable at gamers day and according to reports it ran fine.

StarBreeze are Xbox fans anyway :P

They've showed 360 footage from the beginning.

Sony demoed the game at the Gamer's Day event and apparently it looked great. Jetjevson says the PS3 version is going to be fine and we also have Mejsis (whatever his name is) saying that the PS3 version runs great.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

Anyway, the NYC subway has been pretty amazingly recreated in this game. I'm really looking forward to this - looks like it's going to be a pretty substantive single player game, which is exactly what most of next-gen has been missing to this point.

oh, its not because I'm really worried at this point....I'm just curious as to why devs, or whoever was in charge or media content, would do it....

....I've also heard rumors on t3h internets about there being more content on the PS3 sku than we maybe know about.....Mej? Jet? ....anyone know anything about this?

Damn those new gameplay videos scream mega awesome POWER

Yea, I really didn't care about this game at all, but the intro subway scene is sweet. I wish the lip syncing was a bit better, but hell, the environments are amazing.

Got a glimpse of this game at last years Comic-Con. Even back then i told my self this game will be mine! Cant wait!

From what I've read, it seems like the PS3 version will be fine. It's NOT a port, Starbreeze built both versions side by side, they had a little extra dev time on X360 though. Both games should be the same other than the extra video content on PS3.

Yeah, I just noticed that. Gametrailers took it down I guess. It was a very violent and explicit so maybe thats why they pulled it.
