The Darkness: The Official Thread

I am so loving this game. I really don't know how far I am into it right now, but whoever said 7 hours was full of crap. I've put over 9 already and I just barely got the blackhole skill.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, cause the thread is 40+ pages long, but Jackie actually pulls the trigger on the gun when you pull the trigger on the controller. He doesn't automatically shoot as soon as you touch it. You can see the hammer getting cocked too. I love little touches like this, reminds me of when I noticed how Riddick turned his head by watching his shadow.

Im finding the story so immersive. Done about 4hours so far and I was going to go play Ninja on PS3 (just arrived in UK) but like a good book I cannot put this down. Yes their are some niggles ie it goes glitchy if you try to rip a heart out and he gets back up or he moves in a talk section and the AI is abit daft on medium (I found it too hard to start on hard so dropped down and redid it will go back though later on hard) and yes I was expecting more action but Im finding the actual game so intense because of the story I can overlook this. For me probably the top game of this year

Rented this game last week and finally got around to buying it for PS3.

Had to go to 3 stores to get it, first two (Best Buy and Gamestop) were sold out and luckily got the last copy left at EB.

Sales numbers for this game should be pretty good.

Yup. I brought my copy to a friend's house and he wants to pick it up now, but he went to Gamestop and Bestbuy and they were both sold out for 360 an PS3. Anecdotal for sure, but probably a good sign.

I tried that out after reading your post. That is very cool. I don't think I've ever noticed that in a game before.

The story continues to get deeper. I think this is more like an adventure game in a first person view. I've spent way more time just doing stuff then I have shooting.

Does anyone know if my stats carry over when I play the game a second time? I think I'm almost done and I can't find a couple of stuff still. When I restart do I have to find all 100 collectibles or do I just have to look for the ones that I'm missing?

They carry over.

Okay, thinking about the game some more this morning and I had a few final thoughts:

Did anyone else feel a bit cheated when the game took control through the last half of the final level? Even though those cutscenes were fantastic, I was a little pissed that I never got the chance to take down a helicopter myself. I understand that it was meant to show the Darkness was finally seizing control of Jackie, but it seemed like a little bit of a cop out.

The additional side quests were cool, but I wish they had a bit more depth or helped unlocked new abilities or weapons or something. I feel like I spent more time riding the subway back and forth than I did on the actual quests.

Yes, I felt the same way.
"The Darkness is now all-powerful; watch passively as we show you all the cool stuff it can do." No, dammit! I want to pin guys against the wall with the tentacles, I want to take out the helicopter, I want to create the black hole that can take out concrete pillars, not just sit back and watch it happen. I understand what Starbreeze was trying to communicate here, but it was very unrewarding from a gameplay perspective. I also mentioned before that I felt robbed during Shrote's death; another instance where you press a button and watch a non-interactive cinematic during an event that should have been super-satisfying.

I noticed that as well; it's a very cool little detail that most developers wouldn't bother implementing. I just wish that those kinds of little touches were more prominent throughout the rest of the game design.

WOW! Thanks for the heads up, I didn't pay any attention to this until you mentioned it! Friggin' AWESOME!!

Just finished the game... And although I hated the ending (and the
first time
in the other world) it still is one awesome experience.

Makes me really curious for the Riddick remake, especially since I've never played the original. So should I look forward to that or won't it be as great as this one?

I absolutely LOVE shit like this!! I got to go check this out, sounds awesome.

Now, I'm sure many around here have finished the game, but I'll give this word of warning anyway so that those still beginning don't get screwed over like I just did.

I don't want to use spoiler tags on this, so I'm going to leave story points out and just explain the basics of what not to do so that other players don't get stuck like I did.

So here's the warning: When playing through Chapter 3, DO NOT head towards the City Hall Subway station unless you have Eaten more than 160 hearts. This could cause you to get stuck at a certain section where a psycho, that you need a certain ability to beat, will block your way. No big deal right? Just go back? After you get to this guy, the way back is blocked. Which means I need to restart chapter 3 and lose all the progress that I had made during that chapter. (Including most of the side quests)

Now I do plan to continue playing and finish the game as the atmosphere of the game is awesome and up until this point the game has been excellent. That's just an annoying quirk that I ran into so I thought I'd warn other people so they don't run into the same problem.

I still love how the game ends with
Jackie and Jenny getting their one last moment together on the park bench. I thought that was a really brave move for Sbz/Jenkins. Still gets me a little.

I can see where you're coming from, but how did you not eat more hearts than what you did? Unless I'm in a heated gunfight, I always eat the hearts. Hell, after I'm done, I usually walk over the bodies and eat the hearts that I might have missed. I forget, but I think I had like 350-something hearts at the end of the game.

I have the same habit, the only thing I can think of is that I didn't kill enough people during chapter 2.

Was that intended to show
Jackie forcing the Darkness to let him see her again or was it a "reward" from the Darkness for letting it consume him
?

I think it was more along the lines of Jackie truly gaining control over the Darkness.

Just a dream.

i think
all the jenny scenes after her death was just in jackies mind. the battle in hell with the darkness, her voices, and that final scene were like "dreams".

I completed the game on Normal mode. I really enjoyed it, really good game, not rly difficult though, but that's why I'm gonna play Hard mode. Although I'm kinda disappointed it retakes all that time to regain the Darkness powers, I would've liked the option to start with them after completing it once.

Any word on Starbreeze addressing the multiplayer issues? They don't seem to have an official forum for the company or for the game itself.

Well the "Other World" was definitely a real place. The Darkness created it and Jackie was trapped there those times. Since the Darkness controlled what happened in that realm, he was using manifestions of Jenny to help sway Jackie to his side. So while that wasn't truly Jenny, it was still real, somewhat. I don't know.

question
the battle between jackie and the darkness - what the hell happened? when i got to that part i just started shooting like mad and eventually i ran out of ammo and died. i restarted and began the same way, only i then heard jenny say something along the lines of "he's too powerful, you'll have to find another way!". so i began experimenting, shooting random shit, doing weird things, then before i knew it, the darkness was hunched over and i was free to approach and "absorb" it....

Because:
You must not shoot the Darkness, it'll make him stronger. You have to shoot the Darklings, that's all. Until the moment you can absorb the Darkness.

ah ok. all of a sudden i just passed that part and i didnt even know what the hell i did :P

I just picked this up today and im early in, i really love how cinematic it is.. it feels like a film more than a game and I love the little bits in between, like getting a train. Much better than non stop levels of guns and shooting.. the whole darkness thing is a bit confusing for me right now but im sure i will understand it more soon, and im not a fan of the very loose movement and how much of a pain it is to aim with the sticks with the auto aim off, the enemies move fast and it really needs mouse precision. Cool so far, reminds me alot of Prey, even down to the woman being called Jen :lol

Just finished the game - great experience, but a lot of little things brought the game down for me.

Lack of run speed, darklings felt tacked on, frame rate problems (contributing to the terrible gunplay / aiming),
the two sequences after dying feel rushed - 'dream' or not, everything about it lacked polish, and you never fully have control over the amazing darkness powers that were show in the cutscenes

The game definitely could have used more time in development, but looking at the game schedule ahead, that would of been setting it up for death in sales, so I understand the need to get the title out.

is the game glitched out for me? I was told to
goto chinatown and kill some punk who was selling drunks to kids
, I go and no one is there at all.

Loved every single minute of the game. I don't have any gripes, everything felt fine to me and If I did have any gripes, they were way too small for me to even care. Easily in my top 3 if not 1st when it comes to games overall.

That happened to me with several of the subquests. I found that if I went and completed the next story objective or another sidequest, the targets would show up and I could complete it.

Just beat the game. All around one of my top games this year!! Loved it! Cant wait to see what Starbreeze comes up with next!

I finished the game earlier today too.

+
Decent atmosphere, especially in chapter two and four.
The surroundings are often stunningly beautiful

Repetitive after a while
NY feels like a concrete box. It's aiming to feel open, but it just feels like a bunch of corridors with houses painted on the walls.

All in all; 7/10 for me. A good game.

As has been mentioned there are a whole lot of flaws and issues, but in the end I'm willing to overlook them. Could've been better, but it's still a great game. I'd say an 8/10 would be appropriate.

Does the PS3 version have the supposed "entire back catalog of Top Cow comics", cause the 360 version only seems to have a a couple of them. I've unlocked 5 or so with around 25 unlockables to go.

I hated the gunplay in the game. I never found a setting for the sensitivity that worked for me, so any time the game forced you to use guns without your Darkness powers, I would get really frustrated. It also seemed like the amount of damage you dealt with guns was pretty random. Sometimes guys would go down in one shot, and sometimes it would take half a clip to bring them down, regardless of what gun I was using and where I was aiming. It never turned me off the game completely, but I felt like it went back and forth between being incredibly easy and incredibly frustrating. A little more balance would have been nice.

The additional side quests were cool, but I wish they had a bit more depth or helped unlocked new abilities or weapons or something. I feel like I spent more time riding the subway back and forth than I did on the actual quests.

Yeah, I also experienced one of the things you mentioned: frustration.

This was the most frustrating game I've played since....I cannot remember. It's simply frustrating because often times when you die, you feel cheated -- you feel as though you fell to your death not as a result of your ineptitude of grasping the game's mechanics but because of the inconsistancy in the movement of the targetting reticule, the cumbersome objects that hinder your traversal of the environment (boxes etc. get in the way and actually halt your forward movement entirely), or the varying number of "bullets" it takes to dispatch a foe.

Of course, on the contrary, a game has not hooked me like the Darkness for a long time (I was playing SC: CT concurrently and that title equally grabbed my attention; to strengthen my contention, I will omit SC from this post).

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, back to the bad aspects of the game :D. The story left me wanting more -- it's definitely nothing to write home about. Of course, if we are to discuss the way in which Starbreeze presented the storyline to the player, I would not shy one inch away from saying that it's nothing short of spectacular. All in all, The Darkness left me with a shallow, predictable plot that was, conversely, conveyed masterfully.

I have much more to say about this title in particular than any other title I have recently gotten my hands on, but I'll save the rest of my opinions for a future post.

But, after beating the game and giving the multiplayer a whirl, I'd award the game an 8.0 - 8.5. I need to let my thoughts gestate a bit more before I finalize my score and closing comments.

EDIT:

Hopefully The Darkness 2, or there will be hell to pay *shakes fist*

Just finished it on Normal.. amazing game. The voice acting was amazing, I loved the freedom.. it almost felt like Vampire: the Masquerades. I didnt like the loose walking and shooting was a little tricky but I fell in love with the game, apart from the WWI bits which shat me up. Two pics I took during the game:

This guys pose was classic, and ripping his heart out was beautiful;

This random woman on the Subway who has the same surname as me.. shocked me alot;

Great ****ing game. Just beat it. I would put it on par with Riddick but Riddick holds a more special place in my heart for being so WOWing at the time.

Starbreeze is now my favorite smalltime developer

So did I, and I really, really liked it. First time I've ever bothered finishing a first person shooter.

Edit: Hmmm, I beat the game on normal but didn't get my achievement!

You gotta sit through the credits, when it goes back to the menu you get the achievement.

I gotta say for those of you who enjoyed the gameI really recommend giving it a playthrough on Hard.

I find the whole experience far more compelling and it forces you to use your Darkness powers a little more intelligently. IMO. It's much more satisfying.

I just started the game yesterday evening, and I'm loving it so far. Once I got used to the moving hands for gunplay, ie. ignore them completely and concentrate on the reticule, I really started getting into it.

I love that Starbreeze "feel". It's hard to quantify, but it's something that immediately sets itself apart from other titles, visually and thematically. Great job.

Well I was hoping you'd like it. I mean, what would my tag say if you didn't. ;-)

Yeah I just went through the WW1 part on hard, which ( crazy enough ) was easier than the first time I played it ^^. Normal world is alot harder though..

Authenticity. Nothing seems artificial.

Got the game last week, have played maybe 6-7 hours total and I'm really, really loving it so far. I thought it was good right away, but it wasn't until the part at the orphanage that the game really "clicked" for me.
The story and the entire presentation (graphics, music, voice-acting etc.) is among the best I've seen this generation. I also don't really see what people have against the gunplay, I've really enjoyed both gunning people down and using the darkness powers.

The problem with the gunplay is only noticeable during challenging gunfights. The reticule doesn't seem to move very smoothly and gets caught on things. I'm not sure how to really explain it, but I've noticed it when I'm trying to take down more than one guy at a time and everything just feels like chaos whereas in other FPS I can strafe and shoot and know what my chances are.

The multiplayer is HORRIBLY laggy. WOW.
