The Darkness: The Official Thread

I haven't played the demo on PSN nor do I care for it. I purchased the game, demo not required. The graphics are fine, the 360 version has graphic glitches in it as well. It is not just the PS3 version and being a graphics whore to that extent is just pathetic imo.

I will say it again, the PS3 graphics are fine, except if you are a nitpicky graphics whore. For graphic whores every game must have CoD or Killzone 2 graphics and cost out the ass to produce only not sell enough copies leaving companies with a blown budget.

you do not need to be a ubber graphics whore to want a game to have some freakin anti-aliasing applied to it. i'm not asking for crazy graphics, just a clean looking image.

The aliasing is not that bad, although a clean, but sharp image is preferable to an aliased, but sharp image (a problem which the Darkness vision makes worse IMHO). Over the entire game though, there is still a LOT more to be amazed at graphically that you do tend to forget about the jaggies: in a lot of instances this game has "crazy graphics" just that aliasing is not a wholly conquered beast. If you are sensible to edge aliasing then go for the version which has better AA, but to say that more aliasing somehow destroy the technical achievements this game pushes forward on both platforms is a bit of an overstatement.

Yeah, that's what the myspace says. They're dating the PS3 patch to coincide with the August update.

That's funny because Phil Harrison mentioned that Trophies would go live for Home at that time (August). It's not known if people will be able to see this on the 'outside' at all but interesting still.
From a Gameinformer interview:

Phil Harrison: We’ve built Home on top of the core libraries of the PlayStation Network platform. The trophy functionality is going into PlayStation Network libraries in the next revision, which will be in August.

I'm with Lightning here - I think the PS3 version is absolutely fine. Sure, the 360 one might be better, but I don't have a problem with the jaggies. They're there, but I don't mind them. Am I some kind of fool then? :p

It's hardly the best game ever to be fighting over, though - I'm about 3 hours in and not really impressed, it's got half the character of Riddick, sadly, so far, and I'm hoping it's about to heat up...

Had some fun online games too - the lag isn't a big deal, I only got 2 or 3 brief stutters over about 4 games in total - there's a slip of paper in the game box that explains a bug in the game menus - fix that and you might find you have less lag too.

nah, you're not a fool. consider yourself blessed if it doesn't bother you at all. i really wish it didn't annoy me so much this gen.

Damn . . . the textures are nice in this game.

However, after playing many games with cover systems, it really seems to make you expose yourself w/o being able to hide behind cover.

47 page thread and I see half of the thread wasted only because the xbots are defending the xbox360 version because it looks really bad in the GameTrailer comparison video. (maybe it was the source o what ever it was..)

I have the PS3 version because it was on sale at Futershop for 53 so I just picked it up and I have no problem admitting the PS3 version might be worst ... but I havn't seen more useless arguments like "oh the xbox version has some technique where it looks like a movie...

I say ..... pffffffff

just play the game and at this point tell us how the game was already....

p.s I am about to start it since I just beat Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Trouble is though, is when both versions are identical apart from some improvements on the 360 version, then that becomes the best version, as you said. Besides, you're still to play it by the sounds of your post...

Over half this thread is more like Sbots pissed due to the gimped version, plain and simple. So I'm not sure where you came up with that theory. Side by side, 360 is the definitive version, and enough has been said about that already and you come in here with that crap. There is no need to defend the 360 version because it's plain as day better whatever disillusions you may have about Gametrailers.

I can't believe how few people play The Darkness online. I mean granted it's not amazing, and it's a lagfest but often I can only find a single game up. Craziness.

is the final PS3 game any better than the demo ? i was quite surprised how different the two games look (running side by side - X360 final version/Ps3 demo).

Yes, apparently.

They're pretty adamant early on in the game that darkness is your cover. Stay in the dark areas with the darkness activated and you'll shrug off most damage.

I'm currently deciding to pick up either this or Lost Planet. How many hours am I looking at for the single player and how replayable is it? Also what about the mutiplayer? It seemed to have potential but I haven't much discussion about it in this thread.

Yes, apparently.

isn`t it a bit weird though for a demo of a game that is already out to be worse than the final game?

seems crazy , but hey. I`m sure it happens (old builds at TGS/E3 etc..)

Lost Planet's a better game (in both single and multiplayer modes) although they're both completely different.

Yeah, it was discussed in the weekly PSN content thread. Very odd.

Thanks. I didn't intend to cause a comparison because they are pretty different, but nowadays replayabillity is really important to me.

Lost Planet has better multiplayer, but that multiplayer isn't good enough that you'll pick it over any of the good multiplayer games on 360. Post grab was the best of a mediocre lot. Juggle animations ftl.

I disagree that Lost Planet is a better singleplayer game.

Juggle animations ftl.

yes, that and it had the exact same double damage issue as Monster Hunter - get hit by ice wall, hit for damage fall over, do long falling animation, rest on floor, get up - ice still there, hit for damage fall over, do long falling animation, rest on floor , get up - ice disappearing , hit for damage fall over, do long falling animation, rest on floor... get up, ice gone, projectile in face, hit for damage fall over, do long falling animation, rest on floor , get up ... Oh NICE! the ice is back... hit for dam.... you know where i`m going with this right?

Since my 360 freezes when I play The Darkness I've been slowly playing through the game on a friend's 360 when he's over. Just got to the most impressive part so far...
The killing of Jenny, and the sequence in Hell. Awesome stuff. Really impressive. Still there actually. Want to play again so bad!

In other The Darkness news...I bought one of the graphic novels today. The Darkness: Demon Inside. Pretty good so far. Pretty cool that the game introduced me to the comic series for the first time.

Rented it yesterday, finished it today.....pretty good game but I'm glad I held off on buying it. Like Riddick, the game just flys by. I honestly wouldn't mind playing through it again since I wouldn't be focusing so much on achievements the second time around. I was nearing the end and I thought I might come up short on the Master Darkness achievement because I wasn't killing enough people with my Demon Arm. Getting rid of all those guys on that boat and subsequently the fight in the street thereafter using nothing but that Demon Arm was a challenge.

I really hate the main character though. Totally fucking lame. Why in the hell would anyone want to be this retard? If I hear one more time about how the subway reminds him of a plate of spaghetti or how he and his uncle counted trains in the subway or how a hooker broke his sunglasses while he was eating her out in the subway....jesus christ, this guy LIVES for the subway. We get it. You're an Italian retard that likes underground transit systems. And the guy is supposed to be 21 years old but sounds like a 45 year old Steven Segal doing his best shitty Italian accent after he smoked 2 packs of cigarettes. Just an annoying character all around. I was about to give up on the game because of him and frankly the game isn't that interesting at the beginning, but as soon as I got to
hell
things took a turn for the better.

Yes, yes you are right. Don't know what I was thinking with that. Anyway, I thought the guy who voiced Anthony just did amazing work.

Yeah, he did some awesome work. Put every other voice actor to shame in this game.

Just received this baby from Gamefly. I popped it in, played for about half an hour, and I get a "this disc is unreadable, wipe it with a cloth, and try again." I wipe it up, try it again, but no luck. This time I get a "to play this disc, put it in an Xbox 360 console." Upon further inspection, the disc does have some small nicks/scratches on it, but yeah, I was wondering if anybody else has had the same problem. My other games seem to be working perfectly.

Took the words right out of my mouth

good post :lol

So i just finished the game and i was expecting more. Basically all i wanted to see towards the end was Jackie getting the armor, just like in the comics after he defeats himself in hell. That would of made the ending much more satisfying. Oh and the game was EASY on normal. The game is good but you can clearly see that the devs got lazy with the AI. REAL LAZY. The darklings were USELESS.

I'm still glad that I bought it. I like playing through it every now and then.

so, at the end
he was lying on the bench with jenny, and was he really only dreaming or did it actually happen? why did he see her again? i read in a walkthrough that after this game he gets to meet batman and these kind of guys, knows how to build his full body armor and more weapons and creatures, thus fully controlling the darkness.

I'm not familiar with the comic book version of The Darkness at all (hell, I don't think I've actually read an actual comic since 1988) but judging from the unlockable comics in the game, it seems Starbreeze took a lot of liberties in telling their version of the story. The only one that seemed remotely similar was that brilliant looking level 0 comic that was done in part by Starbreeze themselves. Batman would seem a little out of place here, imo. I could be entirely wrong though...

As for the end, I think it was exactly what Jenny said it was -
a dream....a moment of clarity before he loses his soul to The Darkness

ok thx, now i understand, and about the batman part etc, seems that this guy from gamefaqs, who wrote the walkthrough, knows his stuff about the darkness, so, this is what he wrote. ill spoiler it to be on the safe side:
And yes, Jackie Estacado WILL be back! In the comics, he goes to Hell to find Jenny, comes back alone (rebuilt from a TOOTH the Darkness hid in), and meets more Family to kill off. He finally becomes a bit more of a "good guy" type after meeting Batman and a few other famous types that beleive in human spirit. He masters his Darkness and learns to create all sorts of creatures and weapons. He also has full body armor (from the start actually) and learns
how to summon up Darkness from shadows some never even think to see. He eventually takes over his branch of the family, and continues to fight all sorts of crazed evil. Be it man, demon, or even angel (yes, not ALL angels are good guys!). He continues to uphold good moral fiber though, and likes to help those in need after having come around to what his powers can do. That does not mean he quits living his mafia life though. Jenny will always be with him, in his heart.

Sigh...I really want to play The Darkness...But I can't because it freezes in my 360, and my 360 is going out for repairs tomorrow...God dammit. Bad luck.

So what's the deal with those painting of Angelos (I don't know if I'm spelling this correctly or not), the winged robot/demon? You could unlock concept images of the character but you never run into her, or at least I didn't. Anyone know what that's all about?

Its an unused idea for an enemy that never made it into the final game but in the comic.

Sad though as if it did there may have been something difficult to fight in the game.

More comic stuff: Angelus is the natural enemy of the Darkness.

I really hope that Starbreeze will continue with the the Darkness franchise: the single player experience was brilliant ( I rate it 9/10) but I really wish Jackie would have more Darkness powers, Darklings and wear the Darkness armor (it's soooo badass).

You know, I actually like the whole narrative thing that they're doing. It adds a bit of character to the game (literally) that we don't find in many other titles. It's like it's giving us a bit of personal insight to his life. I LOVE the loading sequences.

i also found this:
The Darkness is part of The Triarchy. That is The Witchblade,
The Darkness, and The Angelus. The Witchblade is another popular, ongoing comic about a female cop with powers close to Jackie's, but different. They have met on several
occasions and live in the same city.

Kinda expounding on that
The Darkness and Angelus ar elike ying and yang, opposing forces etc and the witchblade is just a neutral, balancing force.

well i beat the game the other day on ps3, and seriously, i should have waited until my 360 got back to me. the ps3 version is such a mess.

anyways i thought the game was alright. the best thing about it to me was stabbing people with the demon arm and carrying them around for a bit. hell just ramming my demon cock into people period was hella awesome. the other powers i really didn't care for very much. heck i didn't even use the
demon guns
very much at all.

To me this was a single player experience on par with something like Resident Evil 0 or Metal Gear Solid 2. Not quite as good as something like Resident Evil 2/4/Code Veronica or Metal Gear Solid 1, but still a great experience.

I picked those games for comparison because they're around the same length as The Darkness.

If The Darkness is to be compared to anything, it should be Riddick 'cause the two are very similar....structurally that is.....though I think there's a lot more shooting in The Darkness than I ever remember there being in Riddick. They're about the same length to boot.

Riddick was more fun, if they had to continue a franchise I really hope it's Riddick and not The Darkeness.

Hard mode is only hard before you get the Darkness powers. After that, it's not bad at all. You'll be using Creeping Dark a lot more though.

At the end of the day, I think I prefered Riddick over The Darkness myself. The Darkness had some interesting elements like
the otherworld, which I thought was ingenious. An endless WWI trench battle in hell seems very right to me.
But the structure of the game didn't make as much sense as it does in Riddick. In Riddick it seemed natural that the game is composed of compartmental spaces since you're in a prison but I'm supposed to be in New York in The Darkness where that same design philosophy doesn't work as well here. Plus I felt Riddick was more about adventure and the shooting only really came to the forefront towards the end while The Darkness was about guns right from the get go.

This game is very nice, although yeah, the way the city environments was laid out was... not convincing. The Deus Ex IW effect or something, where urban environments that should be expansive are instead cramped and limiting. Which hurts the feel of the adventure.

But I really enjoyed it. I put the game on easy and auto-aim up to the max because I didn't like the gunplay much (though I liked how people reacted when I shot them! OMG I'm a psychopath), but the story and presentation were riveting. Starbreeze are swell.
