The east has Kojima. Europe has Lake. Who do we got?

Miyamoto should be representing the east but I digress

John Romero is a good answer though, Doom is and has always been extremely influencial

I'm guessing this is about writers/director yet I'm seeing developers with games that don't have much in the way of writing.

Wow, not a single mention of Ken Levine? He's probably the first that comes to mind as an "auteur", a director with a true signature and creative vision, can't wait for Judas đź‘Ś
Somebody posted a picture of him.

US is best at squandering talent, sadly. Give money and proper teams to 50+ year old US designers. Where are the VC money guys when you need them?

Like who is the US equivalent of a Kojima and Sam Lake?

Druckmann? Barlog? The old Mass Effect people?

Think on it. Chew on it.
If you are going along the mystical and otherworldly style of games like Alan Wake or something like twin Peaks then there is only one.

Ken Levine

But I wouldn't say the shock games and judas host nearly as much lynchian style as lake and Kojima

One time Jonathan Burke talked to me in some random twitch stream we both happened to be watching and he said "fake it till you make it" is how he made all of his games. God of War was pretty cool, too, so I vote for him.

All of a sudden Lake is on the level with Kojima?

I don't really fancy either, but having played AW2, I can't stand Lake. Quality of the game aside.

Are you really so narcissistic that you're in your own games?

I wouldn't work under the direction of someone like that. Whack.

I mean, Kojima always puts himself in his own games...

Idk how others interpret the OP but IMO its less about has the "most played games" but more about being the creator of something that is:
-unmistakably unique in terms of aesthethics
-themes completely different than contemporaries
-almost as if built in a vacuum by a person with a very very specific vision
-without publishers getting involved and trying to steer it with the intention of most people "getting it"

Not sure I get most of those from Sam Lake's games. I'm confused at how Kojima and Lake are equivalents, hopefully the OP will clarify.

NeoGAF, you're supposed to be the single player place.

Didn't even realize there was a trailer. Heard him on sacred symbols months ago but that's all I had seen.
I'm definitely playing it but that had major bioshock vibes, like copy and paste vibes
