The Elder Scrolls Online - Freedom and Choice trailer

Here's a little more specific info about the fast travel system. There are wayshrines scattered all over the world. You can fast travel to any of them from anywhere in the world, and this costs gold. If you walk up to a wayshrine and activate it, it brings up a map and lets you fast travel for free.

Once you unlock PVP at level 10, you could (if you were so inclined) warp to the PVP zone from anywhere for free, and then take the shrine right there to get to any you've unlocked.

Wayshrines aren't expensive, but it's a nice option to have, especially if you run low on gold after splurging.

Yeah, I wish I would have known that at first haha

No homes.

Yes, ingredients are everywhere. They trimmed a lot of the fat on that stuff in the last big patch though, so there's not quite so many different kinds of meat to pick up anymore (which is a good thing, considering inventory size)

Day/night cycle is definitely a thing. I haven't really paid attention to how long it takes between each.

You have your inventory (which can be expanded with gold and is per character), and a bank (which is shared, and also expandable with gold). There's no stashing items in a safe chest like you might in Skyrim (so far as I've seen).

You can go to Cyrodiil and ignore PVP to some degree, if you don't go to where people are fighting. There's a bunch of stuff to do there in terms of small dungeons, books/skyshards to find, etc. It's a huge zone.

Monsters don't follow very far in my experience, and if you go through a door (with a loading screen), I'm fairly certain they don't follow (or I haven't seen them do it, at least).

I'm not sure what you mean by "hard to get around". You unlock wayshrines by visiting them once, so there's a lot of fast travel options.

Each zone is loaded separately, and has specific level enemies in it. You can't (without help, anyway) load in at level 1 and walk the whole game.

I'm sure some enemies are bugged/get hung on things, but I haven't seen anything as egregious as what you're talking about.

Thanks for the detailed response. It sounds pretty positive to me but the resource restrictions have me a little worried because how I generally like to ES games is to see the world at my own pace walking through everything and collecting as much as possible so I don't feel like I'm wanting for any resource. I literally set a goal for myself in Skyrim to collect between 100 and 500 of every ingredient and similar requirements for soul gems, etc... I like the feedback loop of going out into the world and getting things and money as I explorer and then returning home and organizing my bounty. Whatever stories and quests i catch during each outing is a plus but I generally save all my story stuff till I feel I've gotten all my crafting materials and abilities up to a point I feel slightly over-powered.

You can definitely do that, but early on you'll be coming back to town often until you expand your inventory slots. The crafting system is pretty robust and useful early on, but unless you put your points into improving every skill, you'll end up with a bunch of ingredients you don't need and can sell/auction off.

I never played it on PC, but apparently they have improved the hell out of it. All I know is that the beta on consoles was amazing and left me baffled at the negative reception from the PC crowd. If you like The Elder Scrolls, then you should definitely like this.

Its much improved from what I've seen. The tutorial area and the starting area totally different and the way quests are laid out makes it feel like a completely different game. I also remember hearing about how if you played with friends, the game would bug out because they created the quests to be completed alone, not with friends which is a huge issue in an mmo.

Example, lets say you and I are playing together and we go to do a quest. If I were to initiate the quest, you could be there but I would have to complete the quest by myself and turn it in and then you would have to initiate and complete the quest by yourself and then turn it in. If you didn't do it that way, the quest would bug out iirc so it made grouping with friends a pain in the ass. I think they fixed this to some extent but when I played in the Welcome back weekend they had, I only grouped with a few people but nothing seemed to break the quest and was able to help people and get the quest completed without having to complete everything required to finish the quest.

I think there was also an issue with the economy. I can't remember the entire situation but it was something about people where able to dupe items into the game which would mess up an in game economy but I'm sure that's been patched by now.

So that's basically why it got a negative reaction. Buggy, bad tutorial and starting area, hard to group, dupe glitch messing up the economy but I think they'd cleared up most of these issues and now I think most people like it especially since its b2p now.

Sounds like it just had growing pains. From what I have played, the wait was most definitely worth it.

It's not free to play. You just buy the game and get everything that has been released so far. Then down the line you can buy whatever expansions or DLC they release. But it does have a shop for skins, mounts and things like that. No pay to win stuff.

Cool. As a huge TES fan I've been leery of TESO since it released, but I might have to give it a chance someday.

I've never actually played an MMO before since the genre has never appealed to me. Is it true you can play TESO alone, or is that just marketing fluff to appease people who crave the single-player experience?

I assume TESO is subject to simply disappearing once it's no longer profitable like any other MMO? Wasn't sure if the game's upfront fee and lack of a sub changed that at all.

Lots of questions probably better asked in an OT, but active thread is active.

It's also worth mentioning that the story stuff is not quite the same is it is in Skyrim (my only Elder Scrolls frame of reference). In Skyrim your quest may tell you to go to the other end of the world to reach your objective. In this, the main story sort of carries you from one end of the zone to the other. Along the way, you will find other quests that are either standalone, or part of a small series, and you typically do them as you go. There are locations and quests off the beaten path, that you might not find if you don't explore.

The guilds (Fighers, Mages, and Undaunted) will have a new quest to offer at certain levels. You can't just go through all of the steps one after another unless you're starting at a higher level. They also each have a skill line with unlockable skills, but these won't level just by doing the quests. They require something different for each guild:
Fighters Guild - destroy dark anchors (world events), and kill daedra and undead
Mages Guild - read special lorebooks out in the world
The Undaunted - completing dungeons (I think this is just the instances group dungeons)

Is all of the store content just cosmetic?

Do I have to pay money for stupid shit like not displaying my helmet (ala F2P SWTOR)?

I played entirely alone and got over 20 hours in on the beta. But every now and then I would run up on someone getting destroyed and would help them. Others also did the same for me here and there.

Anyway, it is most definitely balanced to play solo if you want. In other words, you can play it like it is another ES game. There are just others in the world as well. It's great.

Mostly yea, there are health/mana potions and repair kits too, but those are easily findable in game so it's w/e. Other than those just cosmetic items, mounts and pets.

No, there isn't really and crazy nickel and dime stuff like on ToR.

Thanks. Sounds good.

To people who want to be immersed and basically play Skyrim with more people, you will like this. Alot.

The game isn't so much about numbers and trying to get as strong as possible so much as just getting into the world and being a part of it all.

So it really is made for Elder Scrolls fans?

WIll give it a try when it goes back down in price. The suddenly jump back to $60 kind of made it hard to "try".

Not yet. In theory, they'll add controller support eventually.

Since there will be console versions its a no brainier...

I almost do the same thing. The great thing about the recent update when they added the Justice system is that you if you steal, then you have to have the items you stolen laundered or sold to fence. Prior to the update, you could loot anything/everything and this caused major inventory management issues. With the Justice system, you have to choose what you want to loot. I tend to not steal, so I generally loot open areas that are not owned.

Like the other person said, early on you want to do some quests and earn some money to expand your inventory capacity. They have vendors that sell expansions to increase your carrying capacity. You can also buy more space in your bank. Lastly, once you buy a mount, you can go to a stable and buy your mount more carrying capacity at 250 gold for 1 more slot. So let's say you character can carry 80 items and you have leveled you mount to carry 20, you character can now carry 100 unique items. The max you can level your mount is up to 60.

The most convenient thing to do is to create mules (another character/toon) to serve as a additional means to store items. For example, I have 2 mules that each have the capacity to carry 80 items each. For the majority of items you can stack them up to 200 each (which was a +100 before the last update). What I do, is like my crafting materials that I have well over 2,000 of certain ones, I put them in the bank and then load one of the mules and have them hold them until I need them.

If you are into collecting a lot of resources, that is you best way to do it. Increase you inventory slots, increase you bank slots, increase your mount's slots and use mules for extra storage.

We have to start console gaf guilds yo. I wish it was going out sooner than a month.

I agree. I have been gathering items for crafting and other things to share in the Guild Bank. I even created a few characters just to carry all the stuff I have amassed. Today I began making some bows and great swords and few armor pieces to put in the guild bank for others to use.

We need to decide what faction or run multi-faction guilds? We will also need separate ones for EU and NA servers and for each platform.

I plan to make a NeoGAF guild on EU megaserver for Xbox One. I did during the beta (it was called NeoGAF because I'm SUPER INVENTIVE).

queation for those who played the beta. Would this be playable via remote play on the vita. I mean button-wise? Or is it there to much action going on?

I'm actually getting kinda hyped for this.

I've been looking for an MMO to spend some time with since GW2 runs like crap on my PC (even if I do love the game) and I don't feel (or have the money) to pay monthly to play WoW and this seems to scratch that itch.

Altought Witcher is also releasing soon so I don't even know where to spend my money. And just paying for like three months of WoW would be cheaper then the full game of ESO (and if I get sick of it I can just stop paying).

Decisions, decisions...

I've heard the game has improved a lot since it's oiginal launch. I hope Zenimax Online Studios hits it out the park for the console editions.

I'm not sure if there will be enough people for multi faction. I need to read up on them.

Awesome. You're doing god's work.

All three with gamefly gift card :p. 3 months/two games for $36 total.

Hyped.

Been paid off for a while. Witcher and FF X HD this month, then this and Batman next month. Sogood.gif

How is the loot system in ESO? Is it RNG with the traditional green, blue, orange type drops like World of Warcraft?

Are the loot drops static or dynamic?
Example 1: Boss X always drops magic dagger (static)

Example 2: Boss X drops a number of different rare items (dynamic)

Thanks for all the info you've shared thus far.

I think it's static. A dropped item from a boss will have a unique name, but you can craft something just as good, and have control over which stats it has. (amazing sword drops from boss and has armor penetration, or you can make the same thing with crit chance instead). Though I think there are some effects you can find on weapons that you can't get through crafting, like "deals XX unresistable damage", but they're not powerful enough to be a big deal unless you're really min/maxing. Also there are crafted sets, and dropped sets. If you're after one of the dropped sets (for the set bonuses), you can't get those from crafting. The Warlock set offers magicka bonuses for wearing multiple Warlock items. You could craft a headpiece with the same stats as the Cowl of the Warlock, but you wouldn't get the set bonus.

crafting tiers are:
white
green
blue
purple
yellow

And you can upgrade anything if you're a crafter. You can get a blue or purple drop from a dungeon and upgrade it to yellow. On the crafting side of things, all crafted stuff is white, and is then upgraded to whatever you want. It takes materials to do so though.

I thought the combat in the beta was absolutely awful, and yet I still kind of miss playing the game. Hopefully playing with friends is enjoyable enough that it'll offset the issues I had.

You can be in up to 5 leagues on ESO. I am planning on playing with some friends I played other mmos with but I will definitely join the Gaf league on PS4.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply. It sounds as if the game developers really want to make crafting the viable option vs my getting a "legendary" uber drop from a boss.

That sounds appealing to me as it gives players that just want to be crafters in the game a higher level of importance. It also contributes to a healthy economy in an MMO.

Crafting is extremely viable. If you go look up most builds on the PC Version of ESO most builds are built with crafted gear, with a few pieces here and there that are unique drops. Most people run with crafted gear though because they can control which stats they focus on. Like I am running with 7 piece medium armor on my nightblade that is split between two sets to give maximum health/stamina regen, etc.

Sounds fantastic. The last MMO I recall playing that had such a high importance in actual human being crafters was Star Wars: Galaxies. We (The Empire) had a crafter named "Mira-Mar" that made the best guns around. Man, those were good times.

Yes, the crafting in this game is very good. Each item you make can have specific attributes (only 1) added to it. For example, early on, a lot of new players seek crafters to make Armor that have earthier the Training (which increases your training/level with light/medium or heavy armor) or Exploration (which as you discover new areas, you gain more experience based on how many pieces of armor has the Exploration trait).

There are about 9-10 traits you can add to armor/weapons as you craft them. Then there are magical items you can add on top of the to enchant the item. For example you can enchant an item that gives it a +100 to Magic regeneration. These are all crafted items that are available to you.

It is a really robust system. But it does take time. In order for you to craft an item that has the Training Trait, you first have to find an item that has that trait and then use the research option, in short this makes you character learn that trait and once it is learned you are able to add that trait to items you make. But it is specific to the piece. So if you research a helm with training, then you can make a help with training. If you want to have boots with training, you need to find some with that trait and then research it.

Researching can take some time, especially as you research more and more for a specific item. For example, my main crafter is currently researching the 2nd to the last trait I need for helmets (heavy armor) and it is going to take 28 days (real life days) for it to complete the research. It basically breaks down that the first time you research, it may take an hour, but when you go to research the 2nd trait it may take 2-3 hours. It takes longer the more research you do.

So on top of having the materials to make the items, you need to have traits to modify them. You also then can find Motifs, which are books that once you read you can make armor for different races that are in the game. Then finally there are the trait stones, so if you researched training and you want to add that to the item, there is a special stone you must find that allows you to add training.

That is just the tip of the crafting, then there are items you can find that are rare that you can improve items, you can make Legendary items, if you have the needed items to do so.

Haven't played since a few months after launch but I have seen everything they have done to improve the game and I have to admit I'm impressed. To give people some context as to why a lot of us were calling this shit in the beginning. There was dupe glitch + spammers + bots really ruined this game early but last I heard they essentially fixed all of this.

I'm not going to lie, the gold spam and botters were probably the worst I've seen in a game personally. Anytime you would get to the end of a dungeon/cave/whatever it's called and were looking to kill the 'boss' for the completion of it there would be a like 10-15 bots sitting on it's spawn and auto-kill it. You could eventually get it with some luck but it was incredibly disheartening. I would never consider myself an RP-er and usually tell people to get over gold farmers, but it really ruined the game/broke the immersion/left a salty taste in my mouth when this would happen. When I quit I thought there would be no way in hell they would be able to fix it, then the dupe glitch happened and ruined the economy for a short while, which basically solidified my decision to cancel my sub. This has all since been fixed (or so I've been told/heard). People say the botting programs routinely get patched/people get banned within 2-3 days.

Few friends have been playing it and really enjoy it. I resubbed to WoW in December but we're at the point now where we're just logging in to try and down Mythic bosses and it has gotten pretty stale for me, I may have to pick this back up again when this and controller support drops.

Such great info!

So, is it common for players to receive a rare drop from a boss or trash mob and immediately contact their go to crafter friend so the crafter can improve the item or are some world dropped items strong enough to stand on their own? Can trash mobs even drop rare loot?

Really really considering this, do i go for ps4 or wait until october when i get a new iMac and then play it on that instead...

The more I read about ESO, the more I'm leaning to buying it at launch (PS4). The following 2 things have definitely piqued my interest:

- The Crown Store appears to be mostly cosmetic. Does that mean this game isn't pay 2 win or the usual nickel and dime microtransaction nonsense we are seeing more and more of every day?

- Loot. Is loot mostly fixed in nature? I get that a trait can vary, but will the potency vary? I don't want to deal with something like the Diablo 3 RNG bullshit where you get a legendary item but it has shit stats across the board.

I played entirely alone and got over 20 hours in on the beta. But every now and then I would run up on someone getting destroyed and would help them. Others also did the same for me here and there.

This is the most appealing statement ive heard so far!

1) It is not pay 2 win. The closest you have is being able to buy EXP Potions (soon not yet) and motif's (to make armor look like draedic or ancient elf). Otherwise it's almost all cosmetic or pets/mounts. They have said from the get go they want it to remain as cosmetic or ease of life (exp potions, repair kits, etc.) not pay 2 win.

2) Yes and No. Quest loot is fixed and boss loot is too for the most part, like most mmo's there's a table of loot from bosses. Chests, etc. will be randomized though.

Such great info!

Yes, trash mobs can drop different color items, the colors represent the rarity etc. There are also hidden chests throughout the entire world that you use lock pics to open. If I remember there are 4 different level chests, the higher the level, the less time you have to pick the lock. These can also contain rare, high level items and also gold. These treasure chest disappear once opened and they are on a timer and will reset after a while.

If you find a rare item, you can get it modified, but mostly items that are leveled up by a crafter are home made items. But the big thing here is that the material needed to level up an item is pretty rare. As you find items you can sell them, upgrade them or deconstruct them for their materials. Every once in while, you get lucky and when you deconstruct you get a rare items that allows you to level up crafted items. But this does not always happen. It is common to find items that take a item from Level 1 to Level 2, but the items that take an item to Legendary Status are far and few.

Then there is the risk/reward that plays into leveling up an item. Early on, if you want to take a White item and Level it up, you need a specific item to do so, but if you want to be sure it takes effect, you need multiple of the rare item that allows it to level up. For example, the game will say "If you only use one rare level up stone to level up this item, you have a 30% chance to succeed, but if it fails, you lose the rare stone and the item you are trying to upgrade". If you use 2 of the rare items, it could jump to a 60% chance of success. So there is a gamble in upgrading items, but also a cost. A crafter will not do this stuff for free due to having to find the special items to level them up etc. You can apply enough of the special upgrade items to make sure it is a100% success, but you are also using a lot more rare items to accomplish it.

Thanks for the reply. On #2, what I meant was:

If you get a piece of "Skirmisher" armor to drop from a boss, the stats on it are fixed. Meaning it doesn't have RNG type stuff on it (eg. it can drop with less armor or a lower effect). When you do receive an item from a boss loot table or a randomized chest, does it have fixed stats?

I'm pretty sure that item will be identical every time it drops. Though I think if you run a dungeon at level 20 and get a sword, then run it again at level 21 and get the same sword again, you will now have a level 20 and level 21 version of the same sword. So the level 21 version will be better.

Thanks so much for taking the time out to explain the crafting in such detail. I look forward to hopefully seeing you guys & gals in The Elder Scrolls Online when it launches in June on the PS4.

I will be on Xbox One and PC. If a few IRL friends get the PS4 version I may jump on that one as well, but it will depend on how many people I know get the PS4 version. Right now, I know of about 6 IRL friends getting the Xbox One version, my Wife and about 20+ from one of the guilds on the PC version.

BTW anyone who is going to be new and wants to learn about PVP this is by far the best streamer for it. He answers questions, gives his builds out and really explains stuff.

Also shows you how you 1v1, 1v2, 1v3 and more and not "zerg" or listen to people who say the only way to pvp is zerging.
