The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

Bethesda sent out review copies of the 360 to journalist. I would imagine they would send their best version our to be reviewed.

Well thats obviously not true, if it where reviewers would have been given the PC version.

The only issue I have is the weapon/magic selection. Instead of Oblivions 8 way d-pad shortcuts, you have to add weapons/magic to the 'favourites' menu which you access by pressing up on the d-pad. You then have to cycle through these favourites and select it, it takes 2-3 seconds just to change weapons...Am I missing something here, it couldn't be that convoluted right?

No consensus as usual.
He's saying PS3 version is smooth except at the very beginning.

(I think I remember people saying that it auto-saves a bunch of times in the first few minutes)

Just out of my own curiosity is there a reason your ignoring everything thats been said about the PS3 version in the OT? By those accounts the PS3 version is far from unplayable, and looks great, Bootay for instance has had the game for about a week now and has not claimed a great amount of issues with his copy. You claim the 360 running better is a given, but going by the video at the top of this very page that does not seem to be the case. Who knows, maybe Beth fixes the Install issue, but I would not hold my breath , it's possible, but this is Bethesda.

Just Bethesda history with PS3.

Oblivion was a good port but it was released 1 year later and ported by another dev.

Fallout was released on the same day and the difference between versions was considerable. The 360 one just ran better...both versions were full of bugs sure, but I played a little of the 360 version (almost 30 hours) and never encountered a game breaking bug, while I had to delete my first save of the PS3 version because I was stuck in a quest less than 20 hours into the game.

New Vegas was developed by Obsidian, but ran on the same (gamebryo) engine as Fallout, and again the 360 version ran better.

While Skyrim runs in a new proprietary engine, Bethesda has never been know for their amazing coders, and the PS3 is notoriously more difficult to work with.

Don't get me wrong, if I buy Skyrim, I'm buying it for the PS3. It's been my main console since I bought it years ago. My 360 is gathering dust since Alan Wake was released. And I'm glad that PS3 impressions so far seems to be good, but forgive me if I'm skeptical until Digital Foundry does some comparison.

I really don't care for small graphic hitches, if I did I wouldn't have bought all my multi platform games on the PS3, I just want it to be playable as soon as I pop the disc in my system, instead of having to wait 2, 3 weeks for a patch to fix things up as I had to do with Fallout. :-(

Jesus, I got Fallout 3 on the PS3 the day it came out and I don't remember any goofy bugs or issues..

Edit: Coworker reminded me of the autosave caused lag spikes, so the fix was to disable autosave in the options and that made it smooth.

Consider yourself lucky, because many people thought it was unplayable. And let's not even mention the horrid Fallout 3 GOTY version on the PS3.

edit: Saw your edit, disabling auto save is a game breaking feature for some people.

Good for you my friend, but just because you don't remember then doesn't mean they didn't exist or someone didn't experience then! ;-)

I was going to wait to get it on pc when it's on sale in a year, but i'm stuck at home this weekend and might just have to go and pick up the ps3 version. Hope to hear good things about it in this thread.

Was not trying to attack you, and if it came off that way I apologize. I understand your being skeptical with Beth, I think we should probably all be given their history, and with $60 bucks being on the line it's perfectly reasonable to want the best verson. Was just curious as it seemed like you either might of missed some of the positive feedback (so far). Some people out there would just gloss right over it anyway, you don't seem that type though so obviously that does not apply.

Either way many of us will get the game tonight, tomarrow so i'm sure there will plenty of pixel counting, comparisons, and many a flame war in the comming days. I've been waiting 6 years for this game so i'm just going to enjoy it.

Pre-order canceled.

The text is the most worrying thing. If they used the same capture equipment then the smoothing/resolution present in the PS3 version is clearly not as good as the 360 version which has other implications outside the texture problems the 360 suffers from.

Wouldn't clearing the cache or something fix the texture streaming issue ? Clearing the cache seemed to help in Fallout/Oblivion tons.

The pop in is such a shame, it's like you've got these stunning but basic landscapes in the distance, and every few paces you take you're seeing trees and mountains popping in as you get closer, it breaks the immersion somewhat. I think this is an area where the PC version will perform much better

Man, I'm unexpectedly picking this up tomorrow. I was going to get the 360 version, but now I'm not sure. One the one hand trophies and enjoying playing on my PS3 more, on the other hand the knowledge that Bethesda 360 output has been more solid.

OT: PC FO3 was unplayable for me. Ran fine for the first few hours. I reinstalled the os and the game again with the same hw and drivers and the game crashed constantly, at least every 10-15 minutes.

Agreed. I am 100% not trolling when I say this, but the game looks like absolute shit on 360. After playing Batman: AC, Dark Souls and even Cod3, this game looks like it's running on the same shitty gamebryo engine from a decade ago. I thought this was supposed to be an entirely new engine and yada yada.

EDIT: I'm also seeing some ridiculous bugs, like mammoths floating way up in the air and other shit that looks completely unfinished. I also got stuck in a fucking staircase and had to literally reload my game.

I saw right through their PR talk about their "new" engine. Wasn't hard to tell it would be a refreshed Oblivion engine which is old as hell at this point. Hopefully the gameplay makes up for the graphical shortcomings. I don't entirely hold Bethesda responsible for the problem, it is the last gasp of the generation. I had always advocated waiting for the next gen and polishing "TES V" to high hell. But there is too much money to lose waiting and launching to a small install base. Disappointing to hear of such obvious bugs. I got off easy with DF, MW, and Oblivion but FO3 bit me hard.

That is because you have a magic PS3.

Gonna throw up the 360 version stream right now for anyone who wants to see it in action a few hours early. Come on in and join us.

I would love to watch it but I'm in class without a recharger and my batter would die if i click that link.

Looking at that video, even if it's a texture bug the shadows are still lower res on the 360 version. Especially noticeable in the scene with the horse carriage.

I have the 360 version and the textures are fucking horrendous.
Game is installed.

Do you think its related to the texture bug though?

In its current state are Skyrims textures a large improvement over Oblivion's?

Would like to see those bugs.

Wait, streams stopped? I'm too late?

what in the flying shit is going on?

I would like to know if the 360 version with the texture patch will look comparable to the PS3 version or if I should change my pre-order.

I have a decent pc but I prefer playing on a console (I have a PS3).
Framerate is the only thing I care about in this game. Even Oblivion's GOTY ps3 version is not acceptable for me. I don't mind drops here and there but I cannot stand wandering around at 15-20 fps. It destroys the experience.

So I don't like what I'm reading in this topic...

I dont see anybody complaining about framerate problems. Just texture-loading.

Absolute nonsense.

Over fours hours with the 360 version installed to the HDD and the game looks fantastic. No texture issue yet.

Is there a certain action that commonly triggers it?

Thank you for opening this thread, I've been going back and forth all day trying to decide which version to get tonight.

PS3 Version:
-Very bad framerate in the first areas of the game, it gets better but it's still janky
-Controls feel a little bit iffy, unresponsive and slow
-The lighting seems almost too harsh, some areas are very dark (you can adjust the brightness though)
-The shadows are hilariously bad and pixelated
-A combination of crisp textures and flat textures, a real mixed bag here
-Major pop in
-Small freezing on autosaves, the time varies - the first time it froze for about 10 seconds

So yeah, not great. But, the art style, music and general atmosphere does save it

Thanks for the impressions. How janky would you say the frame rate is?

Digital-Hero said:
My assumption is that it won't. They more than likely cut back due to the DVD format itself. I don't know why they didn't do a HD texture pack disc like BF3. We'll see tomorrow I guess.

The game is only 3.8GB IIRC, so it's not the DVD format holding it back.

How would you say it looks once the textures are properly loaded?

Are you taking the texture bug into consideration when looking through their PR talk or are you just ranting for the sake of ranting?

I'm the same way, i could have bought this for pc but chose ps3.. for the first hour i was kicking myself... fps below 30 all the time and janky controls. But now i'm totally happy with the framerate, i can't tell if its improved or if i'm just used to it.

Everything loaded normally, it looks great. Even the textures on my character's hands are fine (which seemed to be one of the most noticeable problems).

Playing on 360 now seems like a bit of a crapshoot, though. Lots of people seem to be experiencing the problem.

The opening area is pretty much one step from being unplayable, but after that when you're left to your own it gets much better, still a bit iffy at times, but nowhere near as bad

I pretty much have no choice but to go with PS3 (being my only console).

Guess I might disable auto-save.

Yeah it sucks, which is why I'm hoping Zeal answers my question since we know he has had problems. Thanks for the input man.

Cool thanks. Now I wonder if the 360 version performs the same/worse/better. If it's better, I may just pick up that version since the texture bug will definitely get patched. Then again maybe they can patch the frame rate on either version too.

Wow, hey any of you guys that are disappointed with Skyrim enough to stop playing it, send ol' Volimar your 360 copy. Right now it's looking iffy whether or not I'll even be able to pick this up in December...

God, I hate the idea of having to wait till next year to play this...
