The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

could the iffy performance during the opening on the PS3 version be due to the way Bethesda games on ps3 normally do a 4gig install in the background during the intro parts?

I've played both versions 360 and ps3.
Played the 360 first for about 4 hours then switched over to the ps3 version and played for a couple last night.
I definitely prefer the 360 version. Something seems off with the ps3 one. Not sure.
Maybe I was just tired but I felt a little unwell after playing, while I was fine playing the 360. There seems to be a lot of frame rate dropping in the beginning. The picture seems less sharp, some areas are harder to see (too dark/everything blends together).
Also the controls feel less precise.
And if it matters I'm a ps3 man.

Anyway, maybe I'm wrong. Just thought I'd drop in my thoughts.

I noticed quite a bit of tearing while running and with enemies on screen, playing on 360 slim installed, still a great game and does look better than Fallout 3. But I have already noticed the texture bug on some objects pretty annoying in an otherwise awesome game.

That very well could be. That is assuming that same technique is used. It makes the most sense.

There is a 5.5 gb install in the beginning, so I doubt that could be the reason, but I suffered no such ill effects in my game, no pause or nothing.....it did take a while to save the first time, but that was it.

Agree, played both also, something is off with the ps3 version, menus feel more sluggish, overall really.

I cleared my cache on my 360 as recommended to me back on page 4. It helped for about 10 minutes and then my sword started looking like shit again, so it's not really a fix. Oh well, when I'm deep in the game I rarely notice the texture problem anyway.

this thread had me scared shitless to open the wrapper on my 360 copy but I did it anyways and praise to the gods! the game is fucking amazing! and beautiful.. HOLY SHIT!

runs damn good too, this is just off the disk.

Maybe. I'm tempted to rerun the tutorial to confirm this, but I don't want to stop playing.

Once you get past the tutorial the performance is fantastic tho.

Than that couldn't be it.

Ok well the game just froze on me within the first minute of the intro. I waited a minute to see if will work but I had to shut off my PS3.

Gonna try it again.

**PS3 fat 60gb

There is defenitely tearing in the game move the camera around a lot only happens in certain areas and other circumstances may trigger it but it is noticeable, unless this just happens in the first couple hours and it dissappears later in the game, only finished the claw quest and couple others. Also I am playing much of it in 3rd person mode.

So after reading all six pages, it seems like both the console versions come out even - a "pick your poison" scenario?

PS3
-Washed out colors
-Missing shadows

Xbox 360
-Screen tearing
-Texture issues

That sum it up?
I think this is pretty much it, just go with whatever version you feel more comfortable with, each has its issues.

Uh uninstalled the game on 360 and its an obvious jump in texture quality. Hands, nearby tables, etc. Not everywhere-everywhere (ground still ass-like) but much better. I thought it was fine, but it was not. If you're on 360, don't install.

Does anyone test these games? I don't understand how it goes to retail, and games are broken out of the box. (Broken being texture problems to unplayable).

Do they just dev on a kit, then go to manufacturing with no test?

I installed the game last nite to an 8gb usb FD; downloaded the patch and, except for a slight stutter when walking up long sets of stairs, so far, it runs like butter on the 360.

The game looks amazing; no low res textures or crashes so far; but even if I had a crash it would be forgivable, this game is a code beast cramped into a disc. I am actually surprised it runs this well.

I have an Elite connected thru HDMI to a 55" Samsung LED. The only jaggies I've seen so far is when there is a huge panoramic view and there is water, lakes on the distance; the edges present some jaggies but nothing weird enough to brake the immersion. This game is beautiful... period.

If I had to complain about something it will be to Bethesda to hire someone in the future who can make a decent human character creator on their games. The faces textures look better than Oblivion but yet weird... and that's being mega-picky ; )

Check out some youtube or other sources videos and do not settle for the "one" video that shows the low-res bug.

Hope it helps.

I'm playing the PS3 version and the only two issues I've had so far is that I got stuck between some rocks and couldn't get out. The game wouldn't let me jump out and I couldn't run up the sides. Reloading my save fixed that.

I also had the game not load up one of my saves, it just stayed at the loading screen and didn't do anything besides putting up new text. I hit my home button and the system just froze. Had to turn it off to fix it.

I am playing the 360 version and I don't mind textures however the 360 can't maintain 30 fps while going around in the open...

pretty sad... I think Bethesda was showing off the PC version before release.

Secondly: The game is UGLY, the character design is okay and not to mention but was there a
fucking nuke
dropped over the province of Skyrim?

The grass it from Fallout ??

Really? Framerate has been rock solid for me, no matter the environment.

Only drop I experienced was during the first 10 minutes of the game when you know what trashes the place. Been smooth after that.

can't tell if my controller is just messing up or if the menus are just laggy on the ps3 version. i started the game, got the "this game saves blah blah" message and couldn't hit x until after i brought the xmb up. also takes a bit for me to be able to click anything when i open chests.

Even the graphics or animation or art. Skyrim is way better than Oblivion on 360. Some people didn't play Oblivion since a long while it seems.

No probs with running the 360 version here so far. Never had the texture issue yet. (game is not installed)

I had this one happen, too. The frame rate has also been pleasantly more consistent than I expected it be.

I've been playing the PS3 version for about 8 hours and I'm starting to notice some serious menu/dailogue lag. Also for some reason chins on some women look pixellated sometimes, may because of the lighting. I haven't had any crashes though.

I've been playing vanilla 360 Oblivion a lot in the last few weeks leading up to Skyrim to get all the Achievements for shits and giggles.

Anyone saying that the graphics aren't a huge step up from Oblivion is seriously blind. The difference is like night and day.

I also suffered the texture bug when I had mine installed. I uninstalled it and now it looks so much better. I'm glad I have the Slim 360 and it's actually pretty quiet.

graphics are a huge improvement over oblivion.
IQ alone is so much better already, and environments are much more complex and detailed, characters look better and even framerate is a lot more solid and consistent.

I was expecting to come here to see meltdowns about the framerate on the ps3 version. I played about 10 hours of it yesterday and it was fucking terrible. The worst framerate of any game I've played on ps3. Like Bayonetta bad. There was one dungeon in particular where you
are looking for the 3 stolen books and theres a ton of mages
, and it would slow down to the point where it was unplayable when there were 3 or 4 enemies on screen.

I've only read the most recent page but I haven't seen anyone else complaining about it. Am I the only one with these issues? Still loving the game btw but its been incredibly frustrating at times.

^ I'm not far enough into the game yet where I've noticed it being that significant.
I wish my 360 still worked as I would have chosen that version instead but I'll probably end up ditching it anyway when my pc version shows up.

Got it for 360.

Hopefully they can patch the screen tearing and lag when navigating menus (specifically the skill menu). Aside from the texture bug, I'm satisfied with in-game performance.

The PS3 version is fine. It has the usual PS3 problem of some missing shadows and the frame rate isn't as solid, but this is obviously atoned for by v-sync being enabled. I find it very hard to play the majority of games in which tearing is abundant.

Given the reduced shadowing, it stands to reason that the PS3 version will look its worst in static shots. It's a shame that so many multi-format games have this sort of issue, but hey, Sony opted for that GPU...

Got the PS3 version. I had no problems at all with it. runs smooth and no tearing at all, which is key for me because i get severe headaches when tearing is happening.

To the people with concerns with the menus being sluggish, shut off auto save, or change it from 5 minutes to 20 or 30. i had smooth menus since i changed it.

Yeah, tearing is ludicrous this gen at times. The worst offender of all-time has to be No More Heroes on the PS3. I seriously felt like I was going to throw up after about 20 minutes of play - it looks much worse than the Wii version as a result.

Maybe I'm not as anal some in this thread but I don't see what others are complaining about. I have the 360 version (not installed to HD) and it looks amazing. IMO the look of the game is night and day compared to Oblivion. Frame rate has been at a rock solid 30 and in general it feels smoother than Oblivion. The details they've added to this game are great (the fog banks, water spraying from water falls). The snow storms looks amazing and disorienting. Just a great looking game.

Can't believe people here are saying the ps3 version runs well its like a slide show for me in the dungeons at times. Hope my ps3 isn't dying :(

I can confirm the PS3 has the texture loading issue as well after 15+ hours of playing.

I was playing, and I died. During the loading screen where it shows you an item in high detail, and you can rotate it while it gives you a game tip, the item turned blurry. When I was put back in the world, about half the world had blurred textures.

Reloading the save did not work. Exiting game and coming back in did not work. Now I'm stuck in a half crappy looking world.

PS3 80gb Metal Gear Solid version.

Hopefully Bethesda gets this texture issue under control ASAP.

Picked up the PS3 version last night. Been playing for about 6 hours now. Game runs great, huge difference from Fallout 3 and New Vegas for me. Had a couple of frame rate hitches in the beginning area. Shadows could be better, but I generally don't notice unless I stop moving. Also not noticing anything really washed out like in some of the pictures that have been posted.

Yeah, I would say don't even bother looking at the comparison videos and pictures right now until they get ALL the games patched properly.

I'm kind of ticked they let a bug like this get through.

got the ps3 version, only thing i hate are the shadows, or lack of proper shadows. Apart from that it's okay, though i don't really like the game so far Xo It's always fetch quests + loading screens that make me bored with a game.

Running 360 version off the disc and I have had no problems at all. I have had pretty good luck with all Bethesda games honestly, i almost never run into glitches or crashes.

It looks great for a game of this type, I am really happy with it.

Was also hit hard with the 360 texture bug, uninstalled and nothing changed. Played a few other games(hoping to clear the cache) and revisited Skyrim loading up an earlier save and it seems fixed now. Hard to really tell though, but certain areas that were noticeably poor looking have been improved after cache clearing/loading a prior save/uninstalling.

Still, patch this shit!

Something seems off with the ps3 one. Not sure. Maybe I was just tired but I felt a little unwell after playing, while I was fine playing the 360.

I bought the PS3 version of Skyrim and rented the 360 version. I've played about 4 hours of each. Believe it or not I had a similar experience of feeling ill with the PS3 version. I don't know but I think it has something to do with how I'm affected by motion related to framerate. It's like I'm trying to constantly refocus or something. I had the same experience with Dragon Age: the frame lag when rotating the camera gave me a headache and made me feel sick to my stomach. My friends thought I was crazy. No issues when playing it on my 360.

Anyway, back on topic: my experience with both versions of Skyrim echos some of what others have stated:

PS3 version:
--Better textures overall
--Darker, slightly washed out colors but with good delineation between colors
--Occasional loss of framerate with some slight jitter when panning or moving
--Short freezes in the opening sequence, complete PS3 lockup on that first staircase

360 version:
--Brighter, more pronounced colors, perhaps even too oversaturated at times?
--Some blurred textures and pop-in (hopefully installing will help the pop-in?)
--Minimal screen tearing when panning although installing seems to have helped this
--Smoother, more consistent framerate overall

So in my opinion the PS3 looks better, although with muted colors, but the 360 version runs smoother with slightly less detailed textures. If it weren't for my motion issue I'd keep the PS3 version but it looks like I'm going with the 360 version this time.
