The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Console Performance discussion

On PS3 it's like the more hours you play the worse it performs. I didnt experience the texture bug or stuttering until 15 hours+ and now at 30 hours it's getting worse and worse, Solitude was literally a slide show. But like someone said above quitting the game seems to fix it.

Reminds me of New Vegas PS3. Other performance killers included save file size, & DLC. Best game I've played all year & yet totally broken. I picked up Skyrim for 360 in hopes of avoiding this. We'll see.

Eh no offense to anyone but I'm going to trust a site with proper capture equipment over a random user observation.

DF analysis can't come soon enough.

Ill trust my own eyes.. especially after about 6 hrs of play. Looks fine to me.

PS3 version. I have a glitch where after talking to a random NPC or viewing a random item in inventory, the screen will turn all pixelated red. It almost looks as if I were using composite connection and removed the blue or green connection. I can switch to the map and it looks fine but go back to the game and it's screwed. I can still see what's happening but its all washed out and only goes away when I quit the game and restart. Its fucking annoying because it happens every time after about 30 minutes to an hour of playing. I've had three or four hardlocks and various areas of frame rate issues...particularly the first dragon at Whiterun. I've deleted and reinstalled my data and it still didn't help. I've seen a few others complain of the same issue where their screen will go green or bluish. I want to love this game but its quickly starting to rub me the wrong way.

Glad I am not convinced by all those PS3 version praises earlier in the OT, canceled my amazon PS3 order and went to Kmart to snab a 360 copy :D

Im going to chime in here. I have all three versions of the game. PC,PS3, and Now 360 (rented)

Hands down the PC version is the best but I will have to tell you I was more than impressed how the 360 version looks compared to the PC. Mind you I have a PC with a 570GTX and playing on ULTRA the PS3 version looks nothing like it Blurry textures and washed out looking. The 360 is damn close to the PC with some major benefits over the PS3 version.

What I noticed was on the PS3 everything took longer to do. Menu's loading, saving, and entering areas, even conversations. It seemed like I had to walk up and wait 2-3 seconds before someone would talk. When in dungeons the PS3 version looks great however but once your out in the sunlight it looks less impressive and everything has a shine to it. Shadows are horrible if you want an example go to Riverwood and look at the old lady at the entrance look at here face and look at the quality of the neckline and the shadows OUCH!!!!!!

Now if you have a 360 do the same and it looks night and day and closer to the PC. The 360 loads levels in 1/3 of the time as the PS3 enter rooms take like 2 seconds vs 8-10 for ps3 (small issues but still slower) The 360 version seems crisper as well. I did notice some screen tearing but Bethesda has said they are fixing that so I'm not worried.

Im no hater of the PS3 in fact I have 90% of my game on there, but for me Skyrim on PS3 is the worst version. 360 is the best console version and the PC is of course even better.

I will try to take some pictures and post them though I only have a iPhone and the quality with lighting and as nice.

Needless to say I will be selling my PS3 version and buying it on 360. It's that much better IMOH.

I've tried experimenting with the video settings on my PS3 and switching RGB between limited and full and it seems like setting it to limited gives the game a washed out look and makes the shadows look like crap while setting it to full makes the colors and shadows look a lot more natural. This is odd because this isn't the case for most games, except this one.

Could someone else test this out and give their impressions so I know I'm not just seeing things?

I can't speak for the PC, but yeah, I've just been doing a direct comparison of the 360 / PS3 versions and it's night and day. The PS3 rendition is more washed out, blurry, it drops more frames - I'm not trying to antagonise or cause panic but if you own both consoles there's only one winner. I just wish I'd gone for it from the start! I'd have saved myself the money I'm losing on selling the PS3 copy.

Having seen the games separated by mere seconds on my own TV, the direct feed shots are obviously fine because they're only going to accentuate flaws. It stands to reason that it won't look as decrepit on your TV, but if you have both games in front of you the PS3 version suddenly looks like a distinctly poorer cousin.

In terms of IQ difference, it reminds me of Ghostbusters, which is the last game I re-bought for the other console in short measure - washed out colours and a veneer of goop separating you from the action on screen. I'm not suggesting for a moment that the difference is nearly THAT severe, by the way. For starters, Skyrim isn't running in some ridiculous near-SD resolution. If you only have a PS3 there's no way that I'd suggest missing out on this game - It's fantastic regardless. It's just overwhelmingly obvious what the lead platform was.

That footage isnt how a ps3 copy normally runs, it's an issue due maybe to the amount of save files or time the console has been on.

My brother and i played each version literally side by side yesterday and they both dropped frames, ps3 stuttered more and looked washed out, 360 ran slower in towns plus a few random drops.. loading times almost identical, usually ps3 was faster but the 360 beat it every now and then. It was hard to compare finer details because we could never get the weather to match up lol.

The fucking menu lag on the 360 is goddamn maddening. Nice job with those unrecognized button presses constantly happening.

haven't had that, as I have however on the PS3 version encountered massive slowdown in the menus.

It's happening about 75% of the time when I open the menu or try to scroll through things. Sometimes the lag is behind by as much as 7 seconds. I'm thinking I'm going to shelve this until they've patched it cuz it's virtually unplayable.

This never happens to me.

Is it autosaving? Occasionally the game autosaves when you open up the menu, and I've definitely experienced a bit of stuttering/lag as this is happening.

Well, my PS3 version was running quite badly framerate wise but then I did have it on 8 hours straight because the game is so addictive.... Hopefully it's fixed by a simple restart.

Alright, Skyrim now runs better after i stopped last night and started today. Whiterun isn't slideshow city anymore yay. Save file is 7.5mb too.

I get the lag when going through the menus it is usually about 3-5 seconds for me, but it is noticeable because I will be going in and out of menus and it stops, not auto saving. Also have the game freeze on me 4 times and I am only around 20 hours in running on a 360 slim I expected freezes from their past games still a bit much. Anyway glad I went with the 360 version though, even with its many problems.

Oblivion on 360 was the same way(Fallout 3 as well IIRC?). At least before patches there was a huge problem where long play stretches that fill the cache would result in severely diminished performance over time.

It was recommended in the Oblivion OT at the time to regularly cycle between a few other Xbox games after long sessions to help clear the cache and get the game running better again. Or clear the cache manually on the console(which resulted in patch downloading for all games again, a real pain).

i dunno if this is just my machine or what but whenever i go on the menus (Favourites, and the 'magic, skills, map and items') its kinda unresponsive ... i have to go off it then it works again? sorry if already posted but this is the only complaint i have atm.

*EDIT* 360 version . installed

I haven't had any performance issues with the PS3 version so far. I do have a about 10-15 saves, but I've been turning off my console every 1-2 hours anyway.

Same. Game is buttery smooth 90% of the time. Don't know what people's issues are here.

PS3 observations.. Stuttering is now 90% gone, especially out in the open. I deleted 7 of my save files, now i just have the 3 autosaves, i also ran new vegas to possibly try and clear the cache. Of course probably the biggest fix is not having the PS3 running non-stop all day. It's annoying though because now i have this mentality of wanting to turn the ps3 off every hour i play, plus potentially even having to load up a seperate game all the time.

A big question here: My brother is experiencing massive problems with his PS3 version:

here are some of the more glaring issues:

-weapon not usable (drawn but controls won't work)
-constant freezes
-3rd person has massive animation problems (animations not shown, but actions are still performed)

Are those issues common or could his PS3 be on the verge of death?

(he also reported red lines and green spots in the menu after having played Skyrim)

When is the comparison from los/df due?

Eurogamer's is due on Tuesday. LoT has already done their smaller image comparison, they'll probably do the full writeup in the coming week too.

Anyway, from all that's available at this time looks like it's gonna be PC > 360 > PS3 again.

Going by the red and green lines, I'd say the biggest problem is with his PS3. It's not the greatest port and pales (literally) in comparison to the 360 version, but I had maybe two lock ups in ten hours and none of the other problems. The lines/spots sound like a dying GPU.

When my 60GB died from GPU failure, there were funky visual problems that kept getting worse and worse, most notably poling/stretching of geometry off into infinity and white/dead/randomly-colored/flickering textures. It got to the point where some games became seizure-inducing, and a few actually stopped working properly. Eventually the system would crash on startup. Is it just Skyrim giving him trouble?

Yeah I thought so as well. I had similar problems with my 360 a few years back (got it replaced thankfully)

I just wanted to double check, cause with Bethesda you never know what's game and what's the consoles fault. After Oblivion and Fallout 3, those problems could've been easily the games fault.

No, he just contacted me back and the red and green spots are now invading every other part, including the Bluray Playback.

Looks like he has to get a new console then.

First the fuckup with BF3s online pass (2 weeks of customer support calls and nothing yet- fuck you EA) now his PS3 is dying. My brother really is unlucky with his consoles and games it seems.

I'm having the exact same problem. Drives me mad aswell... but it is still playable. Lets hope they patch it up real quick.

Sometimes i have sound delays up to 5 secs aswell.
I kill a dude and 5 secs later i hear him screaming :-/

So, I've got the PS3 version now, but my reserve for the 360 is still over at GS. Money really isn't an issue, but I'm on the fence if I should trade it in or not.

I've been getting the texture streaming issue on my PS3 as well. No ifs about it, it exists on both systems. Handful of characters have been a smeared brown block and some of the items in menus load up w/o textures too.

Did they mention any patch for console versions mainly the ps3?
I would like to play the game, but I think I will wait for some patches....
...but I don't know about bethesda and console patches.

Wow, is bethesda really this shitty a developer that they can't even get the lead platform less buggy? The ps3 version is running fine for me, but I only play for an hour at a time, so.....

It seems that both versions need a patch right away, this shit is ridiculous....

lol the game came out 3 days ago I am sure a patch is coming.

Playing it on PC, tried it on PS3/360 and I just have to say it: Bethesda is an incredibly overrated developer.

Not only the gameplay is mediocre at best but it is so full of glitches that it's embarrassing the praise the title is getting.

The game has tons of content? Yes, it does; it has tons of repetitive, boring and sometimes just plain broken content.

Is it a bad game? Hell no; there are much worse stuff out there and it excels in some aspects, but there's no way this should be considered GOTY material.

Rant over.

So all these issues seem so random for some people. I don't get it.

I can see people playing 360 version with no bugs, lag, tearing etc and then the next person has all three and more. Install, no install, you have happy and unhappy people on both sides.

Same with the PS3. Hours of playing with no issues (the only constant seems to be lighting) and then others saying it is almost unplayable.

I just watched almost 2 hours of PS3 stream last night and never saw any issues. Then I watch the vids linked here and they are plagued with them.

How can so many people have so many different experiences.

Sounds like it is system related in some way (age of system, firmware, memory usage, etc)...what else could it be?

Color me confused!

It sucks to see all the poor impressions of the PS3 version

To anyone who has played both, how would the PS3 performance of Skyrim compare to Two Worlds II on the PS3? Loved the game, but it had its fair share of performance issues and I don't know if I want to play something that runs worse
