I think that the stealth trolling of religion and direct trolling of BJU is sophomoric and disgusting. Especially the posts that have words like "bigoted" and "intolerant" in them. Those Christians sure are bad because they don't believe the same way I do! That kind of place shouldn't be allowed to exist! Such hypocrisy.

If you aren't interested in a religious education then don't go to a private religious school. But if people are interested let them enjoy their rights the same way you expect to be able to enjoy yours: free of hate and criticism. Tolerance is a two-way street.

You're right. I'm just happy for Atra because he was so uncomfortable there. But if someone's beliefs are the same as at Bob Jones and they're happy and fulfilled there, then I have to be okay with it. It's just such an easy target because it's so archaic and wildly different from how most of GAF feels. It's so NOT what a normal university should be, but they aren't a normal university; they're a strict Christian school and everyone knows that going in...it's not a secret.

But, again, I'm glad someone who was uncomfortable there is no longer there.

I imagine that's what Jesus would do, kick non believers out of school

It's fine and it's their right and all that, just not the same thing they preach is it?

Horray!

Glad to know you escape the mind-crushing wheel and are now free.

Congrats:)

I'm glad that the OP is getting his life straightened out and going down the road he feels more comfortable with. I've read the other threads and I know how conflicted he's been. Going to a school where you know you aren't comfortable in the environment is hard, regardless of whether it is religious or not.

There's a difference between tolerance and being free of criticism.

What YOU want is your religious beliefs to be untouchable and uncriticisable. You want "tolerance" but you throw a tantrum when complete strangers then offer their opinions that conflict with yours.

It's you who is the hypocrite here.

What are your plans now? How are they, your parents, taking these news?
The letter is just the official statement. They knew the university did not want me there any more since my last meeting with the dean in April. And again, oddly enough they are handling everything just fine. They were impressed by USC Upstate and the tuition is about $1000 less than BJU's from what I can tell.

Again, my situation was not simple. The only way I was going to get out of BJU was if someone, besides myself, was able to show my parents that BJU was not the right university for me. I badgered my parents for 2 years telling them I wanted out of the school and nothing came out of that. I have never been able to convince my parents of anything unless I was able to use some outside force to influence them. For example, I wasn't allowed to have a Gameboy or rather any video game system (no matter how much I begged and pleaded for my parents to get me one) until my aunt bought me one as a birthday present. I basically have to use other people as proxies in order for me to change my parents' minds. That's how stubborn they can be.

Looks like it's about time for you and your folks to take a nice break from each other. I mean, my parents (like everyone else's) put a few silly restrictions on me when I was younger but they would always consider my point of view if I was able to put forth a valid argument.

They're trying to do what's best for you but it feels like your parents only value their own opinion, and that really shouldn't be happening past the age of 18.

Were you the guy who was trapped under the rule of his parents due to being scared of moving out/paying your own way for school, etc? I'm glad you were able to escape BJU; It sounds pretty cultish, which is fine, as long as people aren't forced.

Yeah, it is an additional source of stress which you really don't need for studies. Look for another college so you can start learning something more useful and interesting to you. And grats!

Well done. It's deeply gratifying to live life as yourself, not masquerading as someone else to get by. So glad you can now do that. Grats on getting into another school.

Grats dude, I forgot how much capitalized pronouns drive me nuts haha

Btw, now that you actually have some freedom, any ideas what you want to study?

There is no one I'd rather teach me to be Christ-like than a group that says, "You're not the same as us so get out, we don't want you."

Now what are you going to do?
I'm going to go home and be a family man! *cue Guile's theme*

Probably going to finish my graphic design degree at USC Upstate and then I'll see what happens from there.

Can you tell us what happened when you talked to the dean?
He reminded me of the school's policy about non-Christian's and he read some Bible passages about Doubting Thomas to me. I forget the exact passage but I believe it was when Jesus said, "Blessed are those who have not seen my resurrected body." I told the dean that the passage was put in there by author of that book in order dissuade people from asking too many questions about the likelihood of the resurrection.

That was about it.

That residence hall life page is full of gold. This one is my favorite:

Computer and video games rated above E10 or games that contain graphic blood or gore, sensual or demonic themes, violent first-person shooting, suggestive dress, bad language or rock music

Seriously, I probably wouldn't last more than one week in that place. Huge respects for you for coming out alive from that place.

Since they've asked you to leave and think it so important for you to do so, you should ask for your tuition back. They want you gone so bad that the Dean wrote you a letter himself; perhaps you should take advantage of that desperation.

I probably signed something when I was first enrolling that said that the money was nonrefundable. Again, not my money not my problem.

It could be your money though. It wasn't your money going in, but you could make it your money coming out. ;p

rofl. I'd have paid a lot of money to see his response to that.

He basically told me that I was "dissecting the passage" and that I should read and listen to scripture with a more open mind.

Edit: He also called me a "budding atheist". Whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean.

There is no "budding". You're either an atheist or you're not.

If there was ever a time for a Fight Club "I Am Jack's smirking revenge" moment, that was it when you were sitting in his office.

Pretty sure I would burst into flames if I ever set foot on that campus. Might be something to see, though.

OP, congrats on getting out of a situation that wasn't right for you. A positive college experience is important, and it seems like you're closer now than you have been yet. Please keep us updated on your experiences at your new school, I'm sure you're going to have to deal with quite a bit of shock as you adjust to a school that is much more open. And we'd like to hear about it. :)

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!

As a Christian..lol at all of those rules. No rock music? Not even Christian stuff? No posters! No PG-13 movies!

Congrats man, not sure what type of people could actually do anything productive there..

Yeah, even though I was not a dorm student I could never talk about video games or music with my fellow classmates. They either had no idea what I was talking about or they knew what I was talking about but didn't say anything so they wouldn't get snitched on.

No, he's right. Atheists are grown from seeds on farms.

I'm sure there's a quote in Revelations or somewhere similar that warned us against planting them.

remember this is the same "university" that for a biology class made him write an essay on why Dawkins was close-minded.

They no longer have that rule http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Jones_University#Dropping_the_no-interracial-dating_rule_.282000.29

Then again, the student body is predominately white. And when I say white, I mean WHITE. I felt like I was in some sort of 1950s time bubble whenever I talked with the other students.

holy fuck, only 11 years ago they had openly racist rules and only then due to external public pressure? I somehow doubt the people there have changed much since that time. Would never fly in a civilised country. Thank god for the human rights act.

re-enroll to troll them.

Also I can't believe that was written by anyone in any form of academia.
lol like this is a real school.

Super congratulations. I went to a school like this until 7th grade. Also in Texas. Wore uniforms, prohibited forms of entertainment/media, etc... Good to be out... now go be awesome!
