The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

I have a 660 and it seems to be running better since the patch. I'd need to play through from the beginning to be sure though. I'm close to finishing the game now.

I'm sure my framerate is too "cinematic" for some but its fine for me. I just don't want any more crashes, it's been fine for the last few chapters thankfully, not had a single crash since patching.

I have a 670 4GB and there's a noticeable improvement. I only fooled around in the hub area, but it's running in the high 50s instead of the high 40s.

I've got a 2GB 670 so maybe the VRAM is the difference, but also I've got a 1440p monitor which can be quite demanding.

I do run SLI as well, not that it matters at all in this game as it doesn't work on this engine. Even when changing the SLI bits to the ones recommended on the PC Gaming Wiki, the scaling is just awful while it makes both GPUs run hotter than in any other game I play.

I'm all for games pushing my hardware, but the visuals of The Evil Within just do not justify the crap performance. But I found a couple tricks that have made the game playable for me, although being quite comprising. First, I bit the bullet and dropped res to 1080p. Then, using the console command r_skipglare 1 gains me about 15 fps, although disables post-processing and depth of field so the game looks really dated with this command.

Ah well, I think I can live with 40 fps in this type game anyways. Just a bummer this patch didn't help me at all.

Finally got the full game in the steam sales, the latest patch performance increase is real, don't think I've had a drop below 60 yet (only up to chapter 3 however, GTX 970), the demo had some obvious wobbles. So smooth (with uncapped FPS). Only issue that seems to have come up with the latest patch is the mouse wheel not working anymore for reading notes n such, anyone else have this ?

Just to update on this. Since I made this post I finished the game and am past half way through a 2nd playthrough. I've had zero crashes to desktop in that time. Big improvement from when I couldn't even get past chapter 3 after dozens of attempts.

Yea, same issue. Gotta use the up/down keys to scroll. Slightly annoying, but not a deal breaker.

How is this game running with the latest patch on a gtx 780?

The demo heats up the card to the Point where it´s about to explode but the framerate isn´t heating up as much.....

Hopefully fixed in next patch then. Games been running great, but Chapter 6 had some really nasty complete system crashes for me, 3 times the game just froze, sound carried on for a little bit, then the screen went blank, and I could hear the GPU fan slowing down, had to reset the computer each time. Just beat chapter 7 and it hasn't happened again, so far at least it was just that chapter. I am running with FPS unlocked, who knows, maybe this is one of the things they thought might happen.

Really glad I picked this up now, really enjoying the game, its utter madness, nothing makes sense, nobody mentions anything to each other, its just one long descent into madness, and its running beautifully all the way (that patch has done wonders, the demo was OK for me but with a lot of dips).

Hopefully they can clean up some left over issues with another patch, PC version is god damned good.

anyone have a problem of the game being scaled way to big. i have a 1080p display but the game acts like its 30% too big and i only see about lefttop 60% of the screen.

My game can't even sustain 30FPS at 720p and minimum settings everywhere.

I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB with an a quad-core 2.3Ghz i7. Is this normal? I've never had a game run this badly on my laptop before.

Is it even possible to run this game at 60fps without a SLI configuration? With my build (i7 4790-K and a gtx 970) I get frame drops down to lower 40s at times (1080p with no black bars).

Turn off ssao(it's bad anyways) and OC your card as much as possible. It should hold 60fps most of the time.

I'd say turn on the letterbox. While it is very nice to play without I kinda like it. It definitely adds to the cinematic feeling. Playing on a TV while sitting farther away it's not an issue. In front of a monitor though it can get quite uncomfortable.
Point with the letterbox is that it renders less and thus you get better performance in terms of frames. This game though is all kinds of fucked when it comes to synchronization timings. It doesn't have true fullscreen so the way it handles vsync is not what you want. This also means that you can't affect it with driver settings related to vsync. You can experiment with the "r_swapinterval" console command. Setting this to 0 for example gives you more frames, but instead certain stuttering can occur during certain framerate values. Under 60fps and some objects appear as if they're moving using integers while others appear to use floats. Capping the framerate to 60 using this setting makes it pretty great, but since the framerate isn't always stable at that it might give you a headache instead if you're sensitive to stuttering.

Does anyone know if you can unlock the locked console commands?
There are loads of timing variables in idTech5 to play with but all of them that I want to change can't be changed.

Ok I just went back and checked to see if it was a fluke before and nope runs at a 59-60fps @1440p with a oc-ed 3570k and a 780ti for me still.

Anyone got the CE table for Evil Within for FOV values of the debug camera? I can't get K-Putt's or Jim2point0's CE tables to work for some reason.

I bought this in the steam sale (now refunded) because despite all my effort I could never fix the hitching/stutter. Video below of user with the exact problem I had.

Reading through the comments in this thread it seems like there was a patch last year that improved things, but not really to 100%. It's a strange one because there are some people from various forums/community steam threads who report the game running perfectly and others with problems with FOV/resolution and also in my case the hitching/stutter.

I honesly believe this game was never meant to be ran higher than 30fps, even though the game features a 60fps vsync option, there's some kind of frame skipping that occurs causing the issue in the above video. Then again, if people truly do have perfect performance then I really am lost on understanding this issue and how to fix it.

Is a gamepad an option? Not only did I prefer the gamepad for this game, it fixed any stutter the mouse gave me and it performed at 60fps with no hitches.

I did experiment with my xbox pad, but sadly the issue remained. Which windows version do you have? I'm on windows 10 so maybe that could be part of it. I don't know.

I played while I was on 7, unfortunately I don't have it installed so I can't test it on win 10.

I had the same issue but eventually was able to fix it. I just forgot what I did. If I remeber correclty it was disabling vsync in the game (force disable via driver utility if needed) and then apply tripple buffering via d3d overrider and msi afterburner frame limiter. Somewhat like that.

Just got this from the Steam sale. I'm getting 60 FPS but there is the odd microstutter. Rotating the camera around 360 degrees, I'll notice 2 or so. For whatever reason, the game is pushing my card with 80%+ GPU usage. Turning the letterbox back on lowers it by 10% or so.

Hardware
GTX 970 (factory overclock)
i7 4790k (overclocked at 4.5 ghz)
8GB RAM

Edit: Got further in the game and I started hitting framerate drops. :\ The lighting is really demanding. Even with SSAO turned off and shadows at medium, burning a stack of hay let to framerate falling into the low 50s.

after hearing good things about the Evil Within 2 from Gamescom it renewed my interest in the original...I never played the first game beyond the demo which I really enjoyed...as a horror fan the game looked great but after hearing about the bugs and issues with black bars etc on the PC version I put in on the backburner waiting for a sale

I see it's currently available on Steam for $8.74 (including all DLC)...can't beat that price...anyone play through the first game after all the patches?...opinions?

Tried to play through this game for the first time on my PC, got about halfway through and now the game won’t stop freezing my PC. I’ll just watch a synopsis and hope 2 performs better. I really enjoyed what I was playing which sucks most.

I’m thinking about grabbing this on PC instead of PS4 Pro to get the best graphics/performance. I’ve got a GTX 1080ti, 32GB RAM, SSD, and an older intel i7 3960x overcloxk cpu. Is this enough to run the game great or should i just get it on my PS4?

You should have no trouble running the game at all on that system.

Awesome thanks! PC it is then. I own but have not played the first game. Hopefully i don’t need to play it to understand this one !

Hey FYI it seems like you're talking about The Evil Within 2, the thread for which is over here. I'm guessing your PC will play the new game fine also, but you should check over there to make sure.

Well, I thought that you were asking about the first game but it sounds like you posted in this topic by mistake.
However I would still expect that system to run the sequel better than a PS4 Pro.
Both games are often CPU-limited rather than GPU-limited, but even so, you should at least be able to run the game at a higher resolution and with higher quality settings - even if you have to run it at 30 FPS. (though you may not)

A 1080ti will of course run pretty much anything better than a PS4 Pro.

The game though still had drops below 60fps at 4k for me with a 1080ti (I honestly was expecting better performance from an old game). I wonder if it's a CPU issue?

EDIT:
Oh wait, are you asking about the sequel? In that case, not sure. But I expect your setup to still provide a much better experience

Oh crap i didn’t see this was for the first game oops!!! Ok well since i own the first gabe on PC I’m going to buy the 2nd there as well - you are right i should st leary be able to run it better than the PS4 will :)
