The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

r_forceaspect ratio 2.1 or 2 is more bearable for now until we can force FOV.

idTech game.. They don't like SLI.

Edit: Grief, what's your videocard that you're running it at 4k?

970, I was getting about 50 FPS. The outside area has issues though, possibly related to the rain effect.

So I'm trying to figure out the right approach for a 144 hz monitor. The game doesn't seem to want to gsync either. About to launch it with my desktop res set to 120 hz to see if that helps any...

Game is running like shit on my machine, getting sub-30 fps =/

i5 760
GTX 650ti BOOST 1 GB

I wish there was an option to change the overall texture quality

Deleted both the appcache folders I had and still the same error. Verifying says 100% but launching the game still says encrypted.

My game also still says PRE-LOAD on it rather than PLAY.

You mean you deleted the httpcache and stat folders that are inside the appcache folder? The particular files you want Steam to regenerate are appinfo.vdf and packageinfo.vdf, which is why I suggested deleting the appcache folder itself. Also, the reason "Play" reverted back to "Pre-load" is that Bethesda changed the list of ReleaseStateOverride countries and the US lost out; if you haven't run the game yet then you'll probably have to first do that while connected to a VPN (delete appcache folder -> quit Steam -> connect to VPN -> restart Steam -> run game).

Okay, so am getting solid 60 FPS indoors. Just was the outside area in the rain where it was dipping. 970, 4670 here.

How's the VRAM usage?

Edit: Sorry for the questions, just wondering about how performance will be for my 780 Ti.

Even though I can play the game, in steam, it still says Preload. Thus, I can't get into "Properties" to enable "+com_allowconsole 1" so I can play 60fps. Any workaround?

PC load times are great and no frame rate drops on a 2 core system. Load times are 2-4 seconds.

Load times are the greatest revelation about this whole thing. After watching so many videos of 15 second loads on dying this is a miracle! Why didnt they send this for the review case.....

Argh, let's just hope this isn't the start of sub-par shitty ports from the PS4/Xbox One to PC. That or Tango was really really lazy on this port. The black bars and fov is really depressing ;(

Nope, deleted the entire appcache folder.

I've never used a VPN and don't really know how to go about doing that, Xpliskin linked me your reply sayin it'd break steamworks. Dunno, don't really wanna have any problems with the game so I'm just gonna wait.

Sucks.

No problem

One point five American Gigabytes of VRAM....

Any apparent issues at 60fps?

Extremely solid.

I'm confident we will iron out the FOV issues shortly, the tools are here we just need to figure out how to use them.

I thought the black bars wouldn't be an issue at all, but they really fucking annoy me.

Outside of that, the game itself is awesome and pretty and runs completely fine on my gtx 780 and i5

Lightning is really good. I'm getting 45-55 fps so far. 60fps in cutscenes, but that's to be expected (unless you are playing Dead Rising 3)
3570k@4.3, 6702gb and 8gb ram.

Does anyone know if using the fps unlocker we can still get achievements?

I think many now see why guys like Grief, myself, and others don't really worry much about what the minimum and recommended specs for games are these days.

Black bars and fov sounds unfortunate, but performance on modest machines and drastically reduced load times are better than I expected. This isn't even close to the train wreck I was anticipating.

Love playing PC port roulette.

Running the game without a VPN would break Steamworks integration since Steam wouldn't consider you in-game due to your US-based IP, but you can work around this by running the game in Offline Mode (although not all games support offline achievements). FlyVPN has servers in various countries and is fairly easy to use; once you're connected, type "What's my IP" into Google to ensure it's changed then restart Steam.

Height and FOV values are me mucking around.

g_fov "120"
win_ypos "0"
win_xpos "0"
in_joystick "1"
r_windowPosY "31"
r_windowPosX "8"
r_windowHeight "1000"
r_windowWidth "1920"
r_fullscreen "1"
r_mode "16"
r_screenGrainAmount "0.52"
r_lpp_SMAA "1"
r_lpp_FXAA "0"
con_IconWindowY "24"
con_IconWindowX "24"

I can play this game but Steam still thinks it's only in preload, so I can't access the properties to enable the console.

I've posted the solution several times.

People need to read more

You can access launch console by making a manual shortcut from the EXE and adding the code to the target line.

Navigate to the game's installation directory (Steam\steamapps\common\likely something like TheEvilWithin), find the exe, make a shortcut to it, and append the command to the target line.

Did your FOV edit work?

I'm wondering if Widescreenfixer will help, first thing I'm going to try when I install the game.

So confused. Since it unlocked early, my steam client still treats it as a pre-download, but when I check the pre-load data, it just starts up the game. So since I have no properties, I can't change anything. But then I do chapter one, and it just looks like it's 60fps anyway(I can normally tell). I'm just confused.

I can't get the frame rate to lock at 60fps, <-1> unlocks the frame rate for me...I'm getting 45-75fps with a 7970. I'll try to force vsync from cstalyst...

I think many now see why guys like Grief, myself, and others don't really worry much about what the minimum and recommended specs for games are these days.

mostly those specs are there to reduce complaints. better to not promise much and overdeliver than overpromise and fail to deliver. its good practice in general for software.

Finding the black bars far more annoying than I expected. View feels so cramped. Hope we see a solution soon.
It's in the OP.

R_forceaspectratio <NUMBER>
Sets the aspect ratio. Default is 2.5, which is our official aspect ratio.
0 is full screen, but not ideal. 1.8 or 2 is probably most comfortable for those who don’t want bars.
